Abendlied (Evening Song) is from a cycle of 12 piano duets, Op. 85, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of composition for Schumann. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim took the final number, consisting merely of a completely unpianistic one-handed melody with chordal accompaniment for two hands, and arranged it for violin, oboe or flute. The present arrangement expands that list of instruments to include the Soprano Saxophone, in its infancy at the time the piece was composed. An alternate part for Alto Saxophone is also included. The soaring, free melody is reminiscent of Schumann’s Manfred music, written around the same time. This piece is very demanding in terms of breath control and phrasing. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boss RC-30 loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boomerang III, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: the head melody is a basic lydian dominant motif that gets displaced forwards or backwards by a sixteenth note on each iteration. In Nashville Number System, we call this sort of syncopation a push, which inspired the title. This idea transitions into a B solo section with a latin songo groove. This is a great tune for practicing tight rhythmic syncopation, or for developing solo ideas on modal scales!With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass (plays the bottom line of loop 2 only) or guitar/keyboards (read the chord symbols as a lead-sheet). Arranged for Brass Quartet, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today was first written in Latin titled Surrexit Christus hodie, as a Bohemian hymn in the 14th century by an unknown author on manuscripts written in Munich and Breslau. In Latin, it had eleven verses. It was first translated into English in 1708 by John Baptist Walsh to be included in his Lyra Davidica (Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns). The verses of the hymn were revised in 1749 by John Arnold. Initially the hymn only had three verses translated with just the first verse being a direct translation; in 1740 Charles Wesley (one of the founders of Methodism) added a fourth verse to the hymn as an alternative, which was later adopted into the hymn as part of it. The hymn is also noted for having Alleluia as a refrain after every line.The hymn is set to a piece of music entitled Easter Hymn which was composed in the Lyra Davidica for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. There was a later version of Easter Hymn composed by William Henry Monk which is also used for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. Some denominations of Christianity often just use one while some use both. The text was written by poet, Johann Mayrohfer, Schubert’s fellow Austrian and close friend, and the lyrics describe the experience of sitting beside a lake at sunset. This guitar arrangement is written in E major in the interests of playability, but it can be performed in Schubert’s original key of F major by placing a capo on the first fret, or in the transposition for low voice by detuning the guitar a tone. Bars 4-11 should be played in a languid, lilting manner to represent the mind-set of the protagonist sitting beside the lake. This mood should be imbued with a hint of foreboding at bar 12, before returning to its former lilting tranquillity at bar 18. The opening phrase should combine these two moods, if possible. The vocal line is echoed in the guitar part in bars 19-24; these phrases should be performed with great delicacy so that they reflect the voice. The middle section, which begins at bar 29, should be played slightly faster than the previous sections, and with a brighter feel. The accompanist needs to set up the transition back to the original tempo in bar 77, after which, the same languid, lilting playing style as the first verse should be applied.This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.
