An epic choice for a recital or funeral. Fauré Background In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend.  Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

I wrote the first movement, Emancipation, between December 2011 and January 2012 but it was not until 2015 that I found the time and inspiration to complete the whole set. From the beginning, I decided I wanted a very intimate sound and thought that the technique of popular singing was the best way to properly convey my concept of the piece. This decision influenced the style of the music, which lies somewhere in between classical and popular, and even jazz. The first version of Kindred Hearts called for piano and string quintet (with double bass) but aware of the difficulty in securing such instrumentation in the context of art song recitals, I decided to change the instrumentation to solo piano. Set in two movements, the music of Oneness in This World represents two things necessary for humanity to move together: Unity and Joy.In the first movement, the music evolves from tension and musical discord to unity and harmony. While much of the drama is heard through the interaction of the clarinet and cello, the piano provides a key factor throughout the second part of the first movement through foundational chaconne variations. As the harmonic progression repeats, the clarinet and cello become more aligned in their music yet maintaining a sense of individuality. Without unity and informed agreement, a society cannot truly benefit its people. Unity is strongest within diversity, contributing to growth, and moving towards a common goal to benefit all.In the second movement, all three musicians share equally in the production of the state of joy. The varied tone colors of the instruments, shifting meters, and dancing music all provide energy and emotions suggesting joy. Joy is a certainty of the goodness of life, in spite of sorrows or pain or even tragedy. Joy gives us wings to transcend our situation, opens us to our potential, and helps us become who we are to be. It retells the tale of the Fall of Mankind – the moment when Eve was enticed by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and then tempted Adam to do the same, and as a result both were banished from the Garden of Eden. Milton imagines far more detail than the Holy Bible. This song presents the story from Adam’s point of view, so I selected relevant passages in Paradise Lost, where Milton imagines Adam’s thoughts and experiences; and I edited them for scansion, to suit a more modern ear, and to make a logical sequence of events. Adam bemoans the deception of Eve by the Serpent and his own shame.  Then he hears Archangel Michael  pronounce the couple’s sentence of banishment from Eden. Next he laments his having to leave Eden. Michael warns him that there will be consequences for all his descendants, and he is given a vision of those horrid consequences—murder, disease and misery. They leave Eden, and Adam hymns of his renewed worshipful attitude,  of a final acceptance of their new more ordinary life.DURATION:  11 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION:  Tenor(c to top c), with either a reed quartet (Oboes, Clarinet and Bassoon) or string quartet.  Dress optional.

One of Franz Schubert's most famous works (and indeed, one of the most well-known lieder), Erlkönig, based on poetry by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, tells the story of a father, his sick child, and a malevolent elf-spirit called Erlkönig (elf king or alder king). The child, delirious with fever, insists to his father that the Erlkönig means to harm him; as his father reassures the child that he is only imagining things, the Erlkönig torments him, sweet words turning into threats. The father races through the forest on his galloping horse with his son in his arms, arriving back home only to find that the child has succumbed to his fever.In Schubert's original composition, the galloping of the horse is depicted in incessant triplets played by the pianist, while the vocalist must portray four different characters - the narrator, the father, the son, and the Erlkönig. Danny Chapa's arrangement for four euphoniums preserves these aspects, dividing the vocal roles amongst the four performers: part one is the narrator, part two is the son, part three is the father, and part four is the Erlkönig. The fifth character of the horse is disbursed throughout all parts.Dr. Chapa holds degrees from Louisiana State University and from the University of North Texas and has held faculty positions at Stephen F. Austin State University and at Brookhaven College. He was from Dillingham, Alaska, which is famous for its runs of red salmon from Bristol Bay. I decided to depict the life cycle of a red salmon in music using the players he had gathered to play on his recital. Using the flugelhorn with the euphonium and cello makes for a wonderful rich and mello sound. I like the result of the original instrumentation, but the piece would also work well with trumpet and trombone instead of flugelhorn and euphonium.
