I've Got the Munchies (2001) for violin, viola, bass clarinet in B-flat and vibraphone.
Small Ensemble B-Flat Bass Clarinet,Vibraphone,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download
(+)
Small Ensemble B-Flat Bass Clarinet,Vibraphone,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869184 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With II. 45 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #30961. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869184). Program note. When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.

Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.734613 Composed by Eliot Daniel. Arranged by Dennis Ruello. Contemporary. Score and parts. 10 pages. Chicory Music #6671801. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734613). On October 15, 1951, the very first episode of the I Love Lucy show aired on CBS and became the most watched TV show in the U.S. for four of its seven-year run. Fun trivia about the opening theme song is that during the first season the show opened with their sponsor Philip Morris’ animation of stick figure cartoons of Lucy and Desi climbing down a pack of Philip Morris cigarettes. It was scored with Ferde Grofé’s Jr. The Grand Canyon Suite theme (a composition from 1931).From the second season onwards, the I Love Lucy signature tune we all know so well became the main theme, and one of the most recognizable pieces of music on the planet. It was written by composer Eliot Daniel who cranked it out in an afternoon as a favor to his old Coast Guard buddy Jess Oppenheimer, the show’s producer. Since Daniel still had another year under his exclusive contract to Fox, he asked Oppenheimer to keep his name out of it. Consequently his name does not appear on first or the second season TV credits for what became one of the most popular TV themes. Later, Daniel did seek credit and received royalties from syndicated reruns for the rest of his life. The lyrics were written by Harold Adamson for an episode in the third season in which Lucy believes everyone has forgotten her birthday. So of course Ricky saves the day after a near disaster. This arrangement for Trombone Quartet / Choir plus optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set parts remains faithful to the original.Performance Time Approx. 1 minute 25 seconds

Baritone Horn TC,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1422859 By Mark Rowlinson (Baritone) and Peter Lawson (piano). By David Warin Solomons. Christmas,Contemporary. Full Performance. Duration 160. David Warin Solomons #1004214. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1422859). Haikus by Canon Albert Radcliffe (who was canon at Manchester Cathedral) and asked me to set them. The music is unusual for vocal works in that it uses the octatonic mode, but this seemed particularly appropriate for the unusual angle which Canon Albert takes on the Christmas story. I said to the snow, Show me what you know of God. Brightness blinded me. To the stars I said, Speak then from a gentler light. Their word was silence. I called to the wind, Whis-per the glory of God. Its breath took my breath. I asked the holly What do you know of his love? Her thorns drew my blood. ©Canon Albert E Radcliffe (Manchester Cathedral, UK).

Small Ensemble,Strings Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1027864 Composed by Antonio Gervasoni. Broadway,Classical,Contemporary,Musical/Show. Score. 51 pages. Antonio Gervasoni #3042345. Published by Antonio Gervasoni (A0.1027864). Four songs for male voice and piano. In 2011, deeply impressed by the work of Bryan Borland, I asked him if he would agree to write a few poems that I could set to music. In his website, he had published several poems, most of them centered around gay life and his personal experiences as a gay man. I was highly interested in writing a work about this topic and Bryan accepted right away. I wrote the first movement, Emancipation, between December 2011 and January 2012 but it was not until 2015 that I found the time and inspiration to complete the whole set. From the beginning, I decided I wanted a very intimate sound and thought that the technique of popular singing was the best way to properly convey my concept of the piece. This decision influenced the style of the music, which lies somewhere in between classical and popular, and even jazz. The first version of Kindred Hearts called for piano and string quintet (with double bass) but aware of the difficulty in securing such instrumentation in the context of art song recitals, I decided to change the instrumentation to solo piano. Copyright Notice: Antonio Gervasoni has been fully authorized by Bryan Borland to publish these songs, which is hereby done without detriment to Mr. Borland's lawful rights over the lyrics.

Thomas Oboe Lee #37741. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869371). Program note: I met Brian Calhoon when he performed at a Boston Conservatory of Music recital featuring students of marimba godhead, Nancy Zeltsman. This was a few years ago … A year ago, I noticed that Brian had started a percussion ensemble with some friends called the Boston Percussion Group. I have always been fascinated with John Cage’s early explorations with percussion instruments: First, Second and Third Constructions; Imaginary Landscape Nos 1, 2 & 3; etc. These percussion pieces eventually led to his invention of the prepared piano. Brian and I got together one day for lunch last fall, and I asked him if he would be interested if I wrote a piece for his group. He said, Yes!!! Percussion Quartet is in six movements. 1 Back beat … Moderato. 2 Arioso … Moderato. 3 Funk march … Moderato. 4 Nachtmusik I … Adagio. 5 Fast and furious … Presto. 6 Nachtmusik II … Moderato Enjoy!!! Small Ensemble Flute,Piano,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1009919 Composed by Martin Lachance. Contemporary. Score and parts. 7 pages. Martin Lachance #22647. Published by Martin Lachance (A0.1009919). This composition was commissioned by the Ensemble de Bilitis, a Montreal based music ensemble consisting of a mezzo-soprano, a flute, and a piano. I asked my cousin, the visual artist and poet Patrick Michael Lachance, if he would write a poem for the occasion. His words inspire me, and I had already composed a work on one of his texts (see Sang d’encre). When he wrote the text, Patrick Michaël decided to step into the shoes of one who has lost his great love. The term Les heures bleues (or blue hours) refers to the wee hours of the morning when the sun begins to appear on the horizon. After many sleepless nights waiting for this lost love, despair quietly settles in. The piece is in four sections, each section corresponding to a stanza of the text. Each section begins with two ascending fifths in the piano, symbolizing the dawning of the morning.

Maestro Charles Ansbacher has been a devoted supporter of my work for many years. In the past 6 years he has commissioned me to write two works for his ensemble, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra: 1) Mambo!!! (2003) 2) Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld (2005) This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great! The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design. I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable. In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores. In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog. In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.

Cello,Piano,Steel Pan,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1095566 Composed by Aaron Gage. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary. 38 pages. Aaron Gage #699558. Published by Aaron Gage (A0.1095566). At the time this piece was conceived, the world had fallen into chaos. We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

Arranged by Maria Thompson Corley. 21st Century,Chamber,Sacred,Spiritual,Traditional. 8 pages. Maria Thompson Corley #875683. Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1284510). “Crossing Jordan†grew out of my daughter Kiana’s surprise request that I arrange a spiritual for voice, piano and cello for her senior recital. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again. The first instrumental version of “Deep River†was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869266). Instrumentation: Alto sax solo and orchestra, 2222-4231-perc-drum set-strings Program note. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Small Ensemble Clarinet,Flute,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987048 Composed by Joe Clark. Contemporary. Score and parts. 11 pages. Joe Clark #2025787. Published by Joe Clark (A0.987048). Flights of Fancy came about in an unexpected way. At the beginning of my sophomore year of high school, my homeroom teacher Lisa Harris decided to host Talent Fridays in an effort to enliven the tedium and pointlessness of the ten-minute homeroom period. Various students solved Rubik’s Cubes, Moonwalked, and displayed all manner of skills. Three of us, however, were musicians. Emily Church, Cailley Culotta, and I (note the alphabetical closeness of our last names!) played flute, viola, and clarinet respectively. Now, at the time, I was unfamiliar with chamber music as a general concept and so rather than searching for a piece for us to play, I elected to write one myself. As we were rehearsing in the band room one morning before school began, my band director walked in and asked what we were playing, sounding surprised that I had written it myself. Later that year, he encouraged me to submit it to various composition contests. Thus, Flights of Fancy was a winner of the 2010 UMass Lowell CMENC Annual Youth Composition Festival. Light, burbling lines sparkle and weave throughout the piece, allowing the three musicians to engage in a lively dialogue. The piece is suitable for a variety of occasions, from a recital opener to light music at a reception. It is suitable for moderately advanced high school ensembles or any college ensemble.

Really??This is a great song and works really well as an instrumental solo for brass instruments. It comes from the 2018 remake of the film 'A Star is Born' and is sung originally by Lady Gaga.I was asked to do an arrangement of the song for a young lady to sing with Boobs & Brass. I was struck by the quality of the words and the music and immediately thought of it as a great addition to the solo repertoire. In terms of standard, I would judge this to be around Grades 5 to 6 ABRSM/Trinity and makes for an interesting challenge away from the grading syllabus.
