Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Petey C. #6342295. Published by Petey C. (A0.873898). This is an edit for trombone of an arrangement I made for horn quartet, with a couple tiny changes. Geared toward university students and professionals. May be a bit difficult for beginners and even intermediate players. The key has been altered to make it in a slightly more comfortable range for trombone, although it maybe sits a bit high in the melodic parts and a bit low in the bassline at times. Melody and bassline get switched around a lot between parts. Makes it more fun and interesting, but requires some skill in all ranges by all players. Doesn't go below a low E, so you should be able to play without a trigger, but I've been told it can get squirrelly down there without one for some players, so... yeah.I had some consultation with a couple trombone player friends about how to best adapt my horn quartets to trombone, but I'm not a trombone player, I'm a horn player, so if you purchase this and notice any errors (notational, range, clef, etc.) that could be pretty easily fixed, let me know! Published by Annemieke Lustenhouwer (A0.1195919). What happens when you close your eyes and you see yourself standing next to Mother Mary when Jesus dies? What do you see and what do you feel? That was what I’ve been asking myself for years when I read the text Stabat Mater. This composition tells about this experience and this questions. Sometimes a motif tells quite literally about this story, like the moment when Jesus is nailed down the cross: first the right hand, then the left hand and finaly with one nail both feet. In the first part of the composition, the viola tells with sforzato accents about this.This Stabat Mater is not only an expression of the pain of the Virgin Mother, but is also a tribute to JS Bach as well. Bach is by some seen as a fith evangelist. Nowadays there are still a lot of people who are affected by how his music tells about biblical stories, like I am. In this Stabat Mater I use the number 5 to express that: the first part is written in 5/4th and the last part Quando corpus et Amen is written with 5 parts in the choir. There can also be found a reworked choral in the choir passages of  O quam tristis et afflicta. It is the choral Wie nahe mir mein Ende from BWV 166.Polyfony is a returning presence in this Stabat Mater. I had an visual idea about this. When I was young I saw in an exhibition a tapestry with all kinds of colours and threads, and everything felt in motion. It was a kind of organized mess, but it was beautiful and felt perfect. I wondered if I could manage to express this idea in music as well. Under one of the polyphonic passages there is a Latin-American dance rhythm to express that motion. I heard that rhythm in my childhood in a rhythmbox of the keyboard of my dad. Another passage has the baroque sarabande-rhythme underneath in the double bass.A lullaby-feeling in some parts of the Stabat Mater tells about another story that got intertwined with this composition. It’s the story of a mother who rocks her terminal dying little son in her arms. I once read that story and it felt connected with the Stabat Mater text for a long time. I decided to express that as well.This composition is dedicated to the Dutch conductor Geert van den Dungen. However I saw many conductors, while playing the oboe and clarinet from a young age, there was nobody who let me think very deeply about music. Geert was the one who changed that for me. I started to study scores and developed a great interest in music analysis and music psychology. Many moments of inspiration and understanding for this Stabat Mater happened on choir rehearsals and concerts where Geert was working. Arranged for Brass Quartet, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today was first written in Latin titled Surrexit Christus hodie, as a Bohemian hymn in the 14th century by an unknown author on manuscripts written in Munich and Breslau. In Latin, it had eleven verses. It was first translated into English in 1708 by John Baptist Walsh to be included in his Lyra Davidica (Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns). The verses of the hymn were revised in 1749 by John Arnold. Initially the hymn only had three verses translated with just the first verse being a direct translation; in 1740 Charles Wesley (one of the founders of Methodism) added a fourth verse to the hymn as an alternative, which was later adopted into the hymn as part of it. The hymn is also noted for having Alleluia as a refrain after every line.The hymn is set to a piece of music entitled Easter Hymn which was composed in the Lyra Davidica for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. There was a later version of Easter Hymn composed by William Henry Monk which is also used for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. Some denominations of Christianity often just use one while some use both. The hymn is sometimes confused with Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, which was written by Wesley. We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2014. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 3 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: a Haiku is characterized by a pattern of 5-7-5 syllables, and in this piece that refers to the meters used in each of the overarching sections. The ambient intro in 5/8 involves a quartal ostinato with long sweeping volume swells, which then develops into a pizzicato groove in 7/8. This groove forms the basis for the majority of the tune, as melodies & improvised solos drift in and out over an A and B section loop. On the final B section, the loop drops out and the violinist builds up into a more distorted strum bowing groove (which accompanies a drum solo on the original recording). As the intensity builds, the 7/8 groove is shortened back into 5/8, thus completing the Haiku. The piece ends with a restatement of the original ostinato as it fades into silence using an automated volume fade on the looper pedal.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass or guitar/keyboards (players can read the chord symbols on the chart as a lead-sheet). From the Composer:I committed last year (2022) to review my musical works that have been in digital storage, complete them as necessary, and release them for the world to hear. I finally finished my first work on this list, one that's been on my hard drive in one version or another since 1999 (that's 24 whole years!).Las Follias de España (which despite its name, originally came from Portugal) is a chord progression usually in either D minor or G minor in the form of i-V-i-VII-III-VII-i-V. Composers for the last 500 years have used this chord progression to come up with some fantastic theme and variations, ranging from unaccompanied works, trio sonatas, to even full orchestral implementations. You can spend a looooong time listening to all the beautiful compositions that composers have made over the centuries highlighting this very captivating set of chords.I humbly submit my own version of La Folia in D minor for String Trio and Cembalo (harpsichord). I wrote my first version of this in my senior year of High School as a challenge to myself to write music in a genre I loved. I made updates here and there over the years, but its sat on a hard drive the entire time. It's taken me months to essentially rework it to my satisfaction and has been submitted for copyright. I have uploaded it to YouTube to share with others.BIG SHOUT OUTS to the three composers that inspired me in this work:Corelli: - His version of La Folia is probably the most popular for violinists, especially those that play out of the Suzuki books. I included a modified version of his Folia (Variation 9) in my work (with all other parts being vastly different from his interpretation) as an homage to his work.J.S. Bach - He showed me that music can be as intelligent as it is beautiful. I have two variations inspired by his work. Variation 8 is one that I wrote this year (2023) which I wanted to write for a long time is a variation that showcases the Harpsichord. Bach's keyboard works and unaccompanied violin works inspired me here. Second, Variation 14 I feel has Bach's inspiration all over it. The violin parts are each playing separate distinct melodies in double counterpoint which trade parts on the repeat. The bass line follows a pattern that Bach has employed for the bass on a number of Violin concertos and lastly, the Harpsichord treble part is a mensuration canon based on one of the violin parts, with the keyboard part playing the melody 4x as fast with variations. Lastly on a play of numbers, number 14 was a very special number for Bach, and as a tribute, I've made this the 14th variation in my work. This was also a new variation I added this year (2023) as well.Vivaldi - My first musical love. I feel that I captured a little bit of his musical DNA in all my works and this piece showcases this. Vivaldi's works is what made me fall in love with Baroque music and I am indebted to him for the profound impact his works have had on my life.So here you go. 413 measures. Published by Erik Cole (A0.996129). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Both of these movements are fairly short and unlikely to be performed unless the entire piece is being performed, so I bundled them together. Con Mortuis functions as the final Promenade for the whole piece, and features high tremolos and the harp, which made for some transcription challenges. The first oboe part is quite difficult, and the high octave can be omitted if necessary.

Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1284510). “Crossing Jordan†grew out of my daughter Kiana’s surprise request that I arrange a spiritual for voice, piano and cello for her senior recital. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.The first instrumental version of “Deep River†was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello.
