Very few of his works have survived. The Trio in G major is one of two composed for the unusual combination of two flutes and viola. Here it has been arranged for flute, violin and viola. It would make a good companion piece with Beethoven’s Serenade for the same combination.The style is early classical retaining the Baroque reluctance to indicate dynamics , leaving this largely to the performers. I have added a few in parentheses ( ) and also some additional phrasings - shown with dashed lines to provide some guidance to less experienced players. The four movements are: Larghetto cantabile, Allegro, Poco Adagio and Presto. A trio of advanced intermediate players will discover that the Bach magic was there to the end.

Unlike the first quartet, the cello part is figured though this piece, like the first, does not need a keyboard. The figuring may have been an after thought and would have enabled the amateur players for whom the published edition was intended to play it with the resources available.There are 4 movements, Presto assai, Minuet & Trio, Adagio & Presto assai. The quartet will be enjoyed by good amateur and professional players and makes a good companion piece in a concert with any of the Mozart flute quartets written 20 years later. The quartet has been lightly edited: obvious mistakes have been corrected without comment. Dynamics added in parenthesis ( ), slurs in dashed lines, staccato dots have been continued throughout passages where only the first part of a section or the first player has the phrasing indicated. The final chords of both sections of the final movement in the original Hummel edition were given different note lengths: the cello a quaver/8th note, viola and violin crotchet/quarter note and the flute a dotted crotchet/quarter note. In both instances all parts play a crotchet/quarter note. The reason for this is unclear; it may have been a Haydn joke comment on the idiosyncrasies of the players or possibly an adjustment for the acoustics of the room in which the piece was played. It seems to have been deliberate because it appears only at the final cadence of both sections.

Bach's decision to compile these concertos was influenced by his need for employment and his encounter with Christian Ludwig, who commissioned several works after being impressed by his performance in Berlin around 1719. Despite Bach's hopes for a position at the Brandenburg court, the Margrave did not pay for the work, possibly because the pieces were revisions of earlier compositions rather than new creations specifically for him. Moreover, the Brandenburg Concertos exemplify the concerto grosso genre popular during the Baroque era, featuring a more significant number of soloists than usual and expansive music that showcases a variety of instruments in different combinations. Bach's innovative use of instruments like trumpets, recorders, French horns, oboes, flutes, violino piccolo, violas da gamba, and harpsichord in these concertos highlights his creativity and mastery in composing intricate and diverse musical pieces. With a running time of just over two and a half minutes, this lively piece is sure to please performers and audiences alike. The work was first performed at a concert in Ben’s Theater Jomtien by the Salaya Quartet, a distinguished group of musicians who at the time were section leaders in the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. The first performance of the original oboe version of this work was given by Cooper Wright (oboe); Inga Causa (violin); Dr Danny Keasler (viola) and Martin Szawelski (cello). Although originally conceived as an encore piece, this lively work will enliven any concert program. It’s written in G major with two bright and rhythmic outer sections and a more reflective middle section that briefly gives the melody to the cello. The oboe part requires an experienced player but it is not especially challenging in terms of range. The cello part remains in the bass clef throughout. The work is also available scored for flute and string trio. The score has seven pages and the four instrumental parts have three pages each, with slightly enlarged print to facilitate performance. The score and parts are contained music in a single 20-page PDF file. Dr Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service. He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast all over Europe as well as in Japan, Thailand, Australia and the USA.

Well, Valsa Brasiliense/BrasÃlia Waltz may be just the ticket!The term Brasiliense refers to the residents of BrasÃlia the federal capital of Brazil. But, the original builders of the city (1958-1961) in the serrana plateau of the country, 1,000 miles into the interior came to be called “candangos.â€Â The waltz  introduction sets a largely consistent pattern of syncopated accompaniment followed by the melody in 2nd violin/viola and then all the violins. Cellos help glide the melody along until they are featured in middle section, a great feature opportunity for the section as a whole or for your principal cellist. Note that even though it lies high, that the register is not extreme. The basses propel the forward motion of the piece and contribute mightily to the surprise ending. This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple groups of two and three beats.The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. The full score and all the orchestral parts are contained in a single PDF file. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available separately.
