Originally for solo piano, this prelude is the longest of the set and is noted for its repeating Aâ™, which appears throughout the piece and sounds like raindrops to many listeners.After a tranquil opening in Db major, we transition into the C# minor middle section where the music intensifies as we pass from dream to nightmare (this is where we feature the rich low tones of the contrabassoon). The nightmare dispels as suddenly as it arrived, and we return back to peace and harmony once more.I get much joy from writing arrangements of great works that we wind players don't always get to perform. THE FUGUE Coming in at a whopping 115 bars, this is one of Bach's longest and most complex fugues. The prelude is in an unusual (for a Bach prelude) binary form. The fugue is remarkably chromatic and complex, based on a subject employing all 12 notes of the chromatic scale (prefiguring Schoenberg's 12-tone system, to come two centuries later!). Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also available on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 is a four-movement work pulled from Edvard Greig’s incidental music to Henrik Ibsen’s 1867 play also titled Peer Gynt.  The original music was composed in 1875 with select movements from the play being pulled into its own suite and published in 1888.  The opening movement to Suite No. 1originated in the prelude to Act IV of the play where it depicted the rising sun.Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist and was considered one of the leading composers from the Romantic Era. Arrangement for woodwind quintet by Daniel Kaplan of Vivaldi's wonderful Concerto Grosso Op. 3 No. 11, RV 565 (from his L'Estro Armonico of 1711). Note especially the fantastic fugue that constitutes the third movement, and the delectable sicilienne of the fourth movement. This is the concerto that Bach arranged as his Organ Concerto No 3 (BWV 596), but Vivaldi's original version is fleeter and has greater rhythmic drive (although, in various places, Bach's example was followed in regard to realization of the figured bass and ornamentation). This is part of Kaplan's project to arrange great classics for woodwind quintet, of which several arrangements have now been completed. The woodwind quintet has the intimacy of chamber music, yet is ideal to bring out the individual lines of contrapuntal pieces such as fugues. (Note that Kaplan's woodwind-quintet arrangement of the six Mozart–Bach Preludes and Fugues, K. 404a, is also avaiable on this website.).
