This arrangement of Steely Dan's “Third World Man†follows the key and form of the original track but brings in some additional horn lines not in the studio version to make for an exciting live performance! The lead sheet/rhythm chart displays the full vocal lead and lyrics, along with chords and cues for the rest of the rhythm section with chords and slashes only through the guitar solo section. The horn charts are of moderate range or difficulty with only a short technical passage in the coda ascending to a written high “C†in the trumpet part. While written for a band with 4 horns, the Baritone Sax part may be omitted and things will still work out as a 3-horn chart. This arrangement has been prepared in the original key of F minor, as recorded.A fantastic song to slip into your Steely Dan tribute!

The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme).The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in. This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount. So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together. In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.

It is more of a intermediate difficulty, but I rated it advanced intermediate because of the high B naturals.

Published by Nicholas Fife (A0.982407). While attending the University of South Carolina the horn choir performed Robert Pruzin’s arrangement of selections from Mahler’s third symphony. All of the horn students loved it, and we performed it at the Southeast Horn Workshop at Western Carolina University in 2009. When Mr. Pruzin died; the arrangement was lost, so I reproduced his arrangement. After studying the original score I was able to identify the portions of the piece that Mr. Pruzin used. Mr. Pruzin taught at the UofSC for 35 years, mentoring and inspiring countless young music students. He was the principal horn of the SC Philharmonic and the Augusta Symphony. He was also an artist in residence at the SC Governor’s School for the Arts. Mr. Pruzin always had a deep admiration for Mozart, so he started a program called Bring Mozart Alive!. He would dress as a court musician from the time of Mozart and performed for thousands of elementary school students. I have wonderful memories from my time at the UofSC, and that includes performing this arrangement. It is my hope that this arrangement continues to be enjoyed by horn students for many years to come. Thank you for everything, Mr. Pruzin. Gustav Mahler finished writing his third symphony in 1896. It is his longest composition. Performance times usually range from 95 to 110 minutes. This arrangement contains portions of the first and final movements of the work.
