Claude Debussy was, by all accounts, totally devoted to his daughter Claude-Emma (affectionately known as Chouchou) The suite Children's Corner (for solo piano) is dedicated to Chouchou. She outlived her father by scarcely a year, succumbing to the diphtheria epidemic of 1919. (with information from Wikipedia). The naming of one or two among Debussy's piano works can raise issues in the light of current trends. These were not an issue during the composer's life, but are unlikely to be ignored today. The word Golliwog may have unwanted implications, but its omission may cause confusion with another of the composer's short piano works known simply as Cakewalk. The cakewalk was a dance developed from the prize walks (dance contests with a cake awarded as the prize) held in the mid-19th century, generally at get-togethers on Black slave plantations before and after emancipation in the Southern United States.... It was originally a processional partner dance danced with comical formality, and may have developed as a subtle mockery of the mannered dances of white slaveholders. Following an exhibition of the cakewalk at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the cakewalk was adopted by performers in minstrel shows, where it was danced exclusively by men until the 1890s. At that point, Broadway shows featuring women began to include cakewalks, and grotesque dances became very popular across the country. [Wikipedia] The grotesque aspect of some later cakewalk dance steps may well be heard in the accompaniment to this work: the oboist's endeavors to produce a soft low B-natural (!) will help create this effect.Technically this piece is intermediate, but the range of the bassoon (especially), oboe, and (to a lesser extent) horn parts are an additional challenge for those players.

He is aware that danger is out there, but for this moment, the peril is far enough away to let his guard down….maybe…. The pages of the comic book super “hero,†The Incredible Hulk, have always been among my favorites. I am personally one of the great defenders of the character’s films. And, as a child, I loved re-runs of the The Incredible Hulk television show. Bixby Walks Alone is the musical intersection of this love. Inspired by the tragic, lonely ending of each episode of the television series, as well as the intense, expositive opening credits sequence of the 2008 film, I sat down and created the minimalist engine that drives this piece. Originally conceived for bassoon quartet, the opportunity to write a work for the Heartland Marimba Quartet allowed me to flesh out this feeling of tension even further.

This is an arrangement for euphonium tuba quartet of Golliwogg's Cakewalk from Children's Corner, a piano cycle said to have been composed by Claude Debussy for his beloved daughter, Claude Emma. This extremely rhythmical piece is based on the Cakewalk, a two-beat dance music that is said to be one of the origins of jazz, but Debussy is said to have hated this music. The piece also includes a passage from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, which he also disliked, and is ironic in its own way. It is best to play it humorously, without the heaviness that comes with playing it in the bass clef.Â

The opening title of the soundtrack from the movie â€Farewell, My Lovely†(1975), with the great Robert Mitchum. Aka “Marlowe´s Themeâ€. As Leif “Smoke Rings†Anderson said about this piece: “It tells a sadly story about a lonely man walking away in the night, going nowhere.†The relaxed tempo makes it an ideal piece for after-hours. And the jazzy chords are just marvellous! Piano voice is written out - with additional chord symbols for your own voicings. As for the title, the name of the piece: I am not entirely sure, whether “Marlowe´s Theme†is correct. The music of the opening scene has no name, as far as I´ve been able to determine, and on Davis Shire´s own piano solo version there´s a combination of this piece with “Marlowe´s Themeâ€. But, there you go … . It´s fantastic music, anyway. This very effective arrangement follows the form of the original soundtrack (hence the youtube link). Original key (Bb minor). The form is: Piano intro (with the original piano pattern), theme in violin, cello plays half the theme, joined by tutti, piano plays half the theme as outro. Duration: approx 02.10 min. For Piano Trio / Quartet / Quintet. Minimal instrumentation: violin1, cello, piano. Optional voices for violin2, and bass included. Professional sheet material. Comes with full score, and complete individual parts. Level: intermediate/advanced. The performance at the ceremony was a success.A piano can easily subsitute the harp part. Rhythms are relatively simple. The song modulates from C major to E-flat major, and there is some shifting in the Violin 1 part.A great piece for a wedding!

Imagine a place where cultures are blended and people of all races can laugh, play, sing, dance, and even pray together.  Colores is a musical tale in which children show us how to create such a place.A child walks on to a deserted playground, looking for others.  Another child joins.  They introduce themselves and begin to talk to each other.  A third joins the conversation, then another, and another, until there is a large group of children, creating a colorful, contrapuntal cacophony of vocal chatter.  After the introductions and lively conversations, they pause to decide what to do next.  As would be expected, they decide to just play.  They run races, play chase and tag, catch and kickball, and laugh and giggle until their energy is gone.  Settling down, and wondering what to do next, one child begins singing a tune that is familiar.  …but not to all of them.  So, it’s time to teach the song to everyone.The tune is shared, bit by bit, and one by one every child learns it and joins in.  Before it’s over, their full-voiced singing creates a choral tapestry in which every child adds his or her own color to the musical palette.After a brief conversation, they add their renewed energy to the song they just learned, pick up the pace, and dance.  They twist and spin, jump and swing, making up their moves as they go along.  But, as before, their energy wanes.  This time, as they settle down, one child feels so comfortable with these new friends, he chooses to share his faith in the form of a chant — a prayer.Some join his prayer, as others add a familiar religious tune.  They pray and sing, and their separate experiences combine to produce a stirring, blended chorale.  As they finish, the day ends and they quickly reminisce about the blended experiences that are now behind them.  Before they go their separate ways, they share a moment of gratitude for the place where they can be free to be who they are, together.On a musical note, Colores combines multiple scale structures and varying types of vertical harmonies to give the piece its color palette.  Each of the five voices is set in a different mode, with different tonal centers and sets of accidentals.  The harmony combines both traditional tertian chords with secondal, quartal, and quintal structures.The colors within the music are intended to represent the racial diversity of the borderland from which the composer drew his inspiration.  It is hoped that we can learn from the example of children who talk, laugh, play, sing, dance, and pray together.  …who are grateful for the time and experiences they share.

Three of the movements relate directly to parts of the poem which bear the same titles, and suggest the poet's anguish at the death of his friend, eventual coming to terms and realising that although the spirit has fled the memory remains. The first movement represents people of all ages making their way to the bullfight, walking at different paces, and also conveys a feeling of impending doom. The quintet was written for friends of similar technical ability, with most of the material fairly distributed.

Maestro Charles Ansbacher has been a devoted supporter of my work for many years. In the past 6 years he has commissioned me to write two works for his ensemble, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra: 1) Mambo!!! (2003) 2) Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld (2005) This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great! The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design. I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable. In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores. In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog. In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.
