While teaching at the high school level one year, I had an exceptional Cello section that had just dominated the November All-State auditions. I wanted to feature them in the next concert, but I couldn't find any appropriate holiday arrangements that featured Cello/Bass, or fit their ability level and something they really wanted to play in the available string ensemble repertoire. I suggested this among a few others, got to work on arranging and some of my students favorite arrangements resulted. Several pieces became requirements in the traditional Holiday Concert string ensemble preconcert. Â Every year audience members arrived early to get good positions to see and hear the SKHS string ensemble greeting the audience as they entered the foyer leading to the theatre. The initial two arrangements that started the Cellobrate the Holidays set were Christmas Time is Here and You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch that are available now. Watch for others to be added soon. I sincerely hope you will enjoy these arrangements as much as my students did!! Cello and Bass players rule! Enjoy the spotlight!!

This was a natural contrast to the soothing jazz style of “Christmas Time is Here.†The in your face jazz/blues style of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch†was a style the students had not experienced, but adapted to immediately and joyfully! The title was suggested/requested by the musicians who commissioned the piece, who wanted it to tie into the title of the concert, “Triple Clef Presentsâ€, and were quite fond of the ambiguity of the meaning. Is it presents as in multiple gifts, or as in to present? Nobody knows, not even me! This ambiguity had me thinking about other homonyms, and I became very interested in thinking about the present, as in past, present, and future. I felt the best way to be “in the present†musically speaking was through improvisation, and so this piece became based around the idea of the piano laying down a groove with the clarinet and viola getting short, “improvised†melodic lines to play over the groove (each melodic line is written out, but has an improvisatory nature to it). PRESENTS is in three sections; a slow and thoughtful section, a live and energetic “jam sessionâ€, and a return to the slower pace with a very introspective vibe.

Program note: First of all, a huge embrace for Max Hobart who has been so very supportive by promoting and premiering new works for the orchestra. Since 1991, I have written three works for Max and the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston. Symphony No. 4 ... War and Peace is my fourth contribution and this work is dedicated to Max. A year ago, John Finney and the University Chorale of Boston College premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000. It was a millennial commission by the Jesuit Institution for the community of Boston College. For that occasion I had originally planned to write a Mass whose texts would include both the Latin from the Ordinary of the Mass - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Agnus Dei - and poems concerning the atrocities and senseless killing in warfare during the last century.However, as it turned out, the poems I chose ended up reflecting the Latin text, which is all about faith and redemption. But I still wanted to write an anti-war symphony. When I approached Max with this idea, he was very excited. Initially he was a little concerned that I might want to use the Tolstoy novel as my inspiration. I assured him that it would not be a four-hour symphony. In order to convey a political message through a symphonic work, texts set as songs are the most direct way. For this symphony, I have narrowed my focus to poems written by veterans of the First World War - some euphemistically call it the Great War. The first poem by Rupert Brooke, The Soldier, has an uneasy, patriotic cheerfulness to its message. The second poem by Wilfred Owen, Dulce et decorum est, is a more realistic view of warfare. Dying for one's own country is not so cool when the dead and the dying are staring at your face!!! The third and last poem by Ivor Gurney, To his love, reflects on the aftermath of war: peace, but at what cost!!! Rupert Brooke (1887 - 1915) died on a naval expedition near the Greek island of Gallipoli. He died of blood poisoning. Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918) was wounded three times in France in the spring of 1917 and was sent back to England to recuperate. He returned to the Front, and was killed on November 4, 1918, just a few days before the Armistice was signed. Ivor Gurney (1890 - 1937), a composer as well, was acutely sensitive to the horrors of the war and, after being wounded and gassed in 1917, he was sent back home to a mental hospital. In 2011, deeply impressed by the work of Bryan Borland, I asked him if he would agree to write a few poems that I could set to music. In his website, he had published several poems, most of them centered around gay life and his personal experiences as a gay man. I was highly interested in writing a work about this topic and Bryan accepted right away. I wrote the first movement, Emancipation, between December 2011 and January 2012 but it was not until 2015 that I found the time and inspiration to complete the whole set. From the beginning, I decided I wanted a very intimate sound and thought that the technique of popular singing was the best way to properly convey my concept of the piece. This decision influenced the style of the music, which lies somewhere in between classical and popular, and even jazz. The first version of Kindred Hearts called for piano and string quintet (with double bass) but aware of the difficulty in securing such instrumentation in the context of art song recitals, I decided to change the instrumentation to solo piano. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is the third movement of the second act of The Nutcracker ballet. The ballet choreographer, Marius Petipa wanted the music to sound like water dripping from a fountain. Tchaikovsky achieved this by featuring a brand new instrument at the time which looked like a piano but sounded like bells--the celesta. This arrangement is for clarinet in A , cello, and piano, with the original celesta part performed on the piano The clarinet and cello parts are reductions of the original orchestral parts. From the Composer:I committed last year (2022) to review my musical works that have been in digital storage, complete them as necessary, and release them for the world to hear. I finally finished my first work on this list, one that's been on my hard drive in one version or another since 1999 (that's 24 whole years!).Las Follias de España (which despite its name, originally came from Portugal) is a chord progression usually in either D minor or G minor in the form of i-V-i-VII-III-VII-i-V. Composers for the last 500 years have used this chord progression to come up with some fantastic theme and variations, ranging from unaccompanied works, trio sonatas, to even full orchestral implementations. You can spend a looooong time listening to all the beautiful compositions that composers have made over the centuries highlighting this very captivating set of chords.I humbly submit my own version of La Folia in D minor for String Trio and Cembalo (harpsichord). I wrote my first version of this in my senior year of High School as a challenge to myself to write music in a genre I loved. I made updates here and there over the years, but its sat on a hard drive the entire time. It's taken me months to essentially rework it to my satisfaction and has been submitted for copyright. I have uploaded it to YouTube to share with others.BIG SHOUT OUTS to the three composers that inspired me in this work:Corelli: - His version of La Folia is probably the most popular for violinists, especially those that play out of the Suzuki books. I included a modified version of his Folia (Variation 9) in my work (with all other parts being vastly different from his interpretation) as an homage to his work.J.S. Bach - He showed me that music can be as intelligent as it is beautiful. I have two variations inspired by his work. Variation 8 is one that I wrote this year (2023) which I wanted to write for a long time is a variation that showcases the Harpsichord. Bach's keyboard works and unaccompanied violin works inspired me here. Second, Variation 14 I feel has Bach's inspiration all over it. The violin parts are each playing separate distinct melodies in double counterpoint which trade parts on the repeat. The bass line follows a pattern that Bach has employed for the bass on a number of Violin concertos and lastly, the Harpsichord treble part is a mensuration canon based on one of the violin parts, with the keyboard part playing the melody 4x as fast with variations. Lastly on a play of numbers, number 14 was a very special number for Bach, and as a tribute, I've made this the 14th variation in my work. This was also a new variation I added this year (2023) as well.Vivaldi - My first musical love. I feel that I captured a little bit of his musical DNA in all my works and this piece showcases this. Vivaldi's works is what made me fall in love with Baroque music and I am indebted to him for the profound impact his works have had on my life.So here you go. 413 measures. My longest individual work to date. And because I love playing with numbers, I decided to release this to the world on my 41st Year, 3rd month. Enjoy!- Jose Bravo.
