Distant Engraver Music #5723341. Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977047). In this arrangement of J. S. Bach’s famous Air, the four parts of the original string orchestra are played by four solo contrabasses. The two upper bass parts take turns playing the soaring primary melody while the two lower parts alternate in playing the famous bass line. With only slight modifications and an occasional omission, all of Bach’s original counterpoint is used in a way that preserves clarity and lightness even though the overall range has been compressed for the basses. Both the 1st and 2nd bass parts require performers to play in the high solo register, playing up to high Eb and D respectively. The original key of D major has been transposed to F major for this arrangement.

The Quintet for double basses was written for the bassist, Paul Ellison and premiered on the Isle of Man, England at the International Double bass festival on August 8, 1978. The players were all principal bassists in five major American orchestras. This explains the equality of the sometime difficult parts. Both traditional and contemporary techniques are used and the score incorporates written and spatial notation. There are moments of solos, duos, trios etc. as well as chorales. The duration is 16 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price.

The poet is required to make a pointing hand gesture to the Double Bass every-time to word There/Not there is iterated. The words reflect a full life span, from birth, childhood, manhood and as an elder. The poem also appears in Palazzolo's book of poetry Unhoused: available through Amazon books and Regime Publishers. It was first composed around 1890, at the age of 28, but was significantly revised just before its publication in 1905.This is an arrangement for wind dectet of the third and most famous movement called Clair de lune in Db major.Its name comes from Verlaine's poem Clair de lune, moonlight in French. It is written in 9/8 compound time, marked andante très expressif, and both the piano and orchestral scores are marked mostly pianissimo. Musically, Debussy's Clair de lune belongs to French Impressionism.It is arranged for a double wind quintet of 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl (in A) 2 hn & 2 bsn.I have included an optional bass line for either double bass, contra bassoon or tuba.Other movements are available, for both dectet, and other instrumental groups.It is based on the A Caplet orchestration, so I have retained as far as possible the solo instrumentation.The tricky arpeggios are carried by the clarinets and bassoons.

Along with the solo bass part I’ve included a keyboard part / score and a part for another bassist to play the continuo bass line. The solo bass part is notated at sounding pitch in the score. It's nice to do with harpsichord and continuo bass, but also possible to omit the continuo bass part and play simply with piano accompaniment.

College Hornpipe (double bass part – vln, cel, bs) MO115DDouble Bass Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor5 pages - 3:30 minutes in length College Hornpipe for violin, cello and doublebass is a traditional fiddle tune that Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer arranged for their album with Yo-Yo Ma entitled Appalachia Waltz. O'Connor learned this tune from fiddling legend Benny Thomasson at an early age. Thomasson developed the parts of the tune as incorporated in this arrangement. O'Connor added a variation to each of the Thomasson parts in addition. After Meyer finished out the arrangement with his bass lines,College Hornpipe has a new and different life from the one found on the early O'Connor recording Soppin' The Gravy. The trio performed the piece for a nation-wide television audience at President's Clinton Inaugural Gala. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
