Published by Rocco Di Pietro (A0.1004751). 'Melodienschatz' (melodic treasury) was composed for solo clarinet for Ernst Thomas as a virtuoso work as a solo. The piece is also presented as a 'Journey' accompanied by Flute, Bassoon and Alto Saxophone which use music stands spread through out the audience. In this version the solo clarinet enters from the back of the hall and plays with each Journey instrument on his way to the stage and later exits by way of the same route. First performed by Justin Johnson clarinetist, and the ensemble CODE, the complete score with transposed parts is included here with the solo score, a work of about ten minutes.

Concert Note:The Five Poems of Melissanthi, in the English translation of Diana Maynard, comprise a complete vocal cycle of five poems set to music as a posthumous tribute by the composer to the Athenian poet Melissanthi (1910-1991), in the manner of the old tombeaux of the Baroque era, a tradition also used by many composers of the first half of the 20th century. This composer confirms, with reference to his own experience of Melissanthi's poetry these five from among her many poems have made a such a great impact on my composing that I felt the need to dedicate these musical pages to her.The evocative poetic expressions of Melissanthi, whose real name was Eve Chougia-Skandalaki, and the mysterious atmospheres invoked by David Solomons' music introduce the listener to an ethereal and metaphysical dimension, allowing us a glimpse into the unknown and the intangible. A recurring theme, which unites the five lyrics by an invisible thread, is an incessant fluctuation between the real and the unreal, between the known and the unknown and between reality and unreality. The inevitable abandonment of the mind to the seductive charms of the surreal creates an extraordinary parallelism with lines from a great poet of the past…così tra questa/immensità s'annega il pensier mio:/e il naufragar m'è dolcein questo mare[…so in this/immensity my thoughts drown:/ and to be shipwrecked is sweetfor me in this sea.](Giacomo Leopardi, L'Infinito, 1819).Both the performance and the enjoyment of the Five Poems therefore require particular emotional involvement, in an overall picture where every single note is a tiny but essential constituent of a larger and more complex musical architecture. The harmonic structure of the five compositions presents a substantial homogenity of formulation even within the various rhythmicalsolutions selected, with their repeated returns to themes and chords. In it, one Abraham of Wurzburg, an aspiring medieval mage and devout Jew, describes a tour that he made of points in Europe and the Middle East, searching for a mentor who would not turn out to be a charlatan (or worse). Abraham eventually finds such a figure in a small town on the banks of the Nile. Here he meets the great magician Abramelin, whose system of magic Abraham sets out in detail. What results is the present volume, which puts forth a complete course in ceremonial magic (both white and black). In Abramelin’s system, after a lengthy period of self-purification and prayer, one may call upon one’s Holy Guardian Angel, who will then instruct one further on how to conjure up the princes and demons of Hell to do your bidding. The crux of this involves using certain special squares of anagrammatic words that would compel the conjured demon to perform specified tasks. These works can be programmed independently or played consecutively without interruption to create a seamless, unified musical experience.Each of the three pieces draws its melodic inspiration and thematic ideas from Los Requiebros, the opening composition of Enrique Granados' Goyescas. In Los Requiebros, Granados skillfully incorporates a traditional Valencian tune known as La Tirana del TrÃpili to depict a romantic scene inspired by one of Francisco Goya's paintings. Goya's art served as a profound influence on Granados during this period.In Scenes, the aforementioned Valencian tune, along with various other elements rooted in the Spanish-Catalan piano school of Granados' era, is explored, dissected, reassembled, and blended with original ideas. This creative process results in three unique acoustic scenes where the central musical material is manipulated through looping, resonating, and phase shifting techniques. The resulting compositions provide a fresh perspective on the source material, offering a captivating journey through the world of sound, evoking a sense of timelessness and innovation.Scenes invites the audience to explore the rich heritage of Spanish-Catalan music while embracing contemporary approaches to composition and performance. Published by Jeremy Graham Hart (A0.1028192). Oscillation began as an experiment in coordination of a melody and harmony which are based on different means of organization. To this end, the clarinet is treated separately from the string quartet. The clarinet melody is constructed by means of limited interval usage. In mm.1–3 it can be observed that the melodic intervals are strictly limited to the use of a major 2nd/minor 7th or a major 6th/minor 3rd. By contrast, the string quartet has no limitation on its intervallic usage but always strives towards triadic harmonies in its accompanimental capacity and tends to converge on harmonies diatonic to the key. In addition, despite the proliferation of non-chord tones and transitionary passages in the string quartets’ music, the stable harmonies are written to have fairly parsimonious motion between them (if one were to reduce out the NCTs etc.) The coordination of these two separate logics is done by the selection of anchor-pitches for the melodic phrases. For example, the melodic phrase in mm.4–7 oscillates around the pitch of G natural (transposed in the score), which it shares with the F major/minor 7th chord that is heard as the harmonic goal of the strings in m.7. The teleology of the work can largely be traced in its melodic construction. Its opening phrase of mm.1–3 is anchored on G natural and ends on a C sharp, a tritone above the anchor, to simulate a half-cadence effect. The second phrase of mm.4–7 is still written on G natural but it ends on G as well, forming the authentic cadence and establishing a basic period as well as the work’s first theme. This is followed by second period which represents a dominant relationship to the first. The phrase at mm.10–13.2 is a rather extended utterance in comparison to the first two and is anchored on D natural. This is followed by 4-stage call and response across the ensemble (excluding the second violin) that leads the first section to a close at m.16 on a C diminished triad. Melodically, the first section is characterised by its limited used of a major 2nd/minor 7th or a major 6th/minor 3rd interval. At m.17, the second section follows much the same process as the first, using anchor pitches as a means of coordination and formal definition, and alternating soloistic clarinet playing with activated harmonies in the strings. The primary difference is in the character of the second section’s theme with regards to its rhythmic profile as well as its intervallic content. Namely, these are limited to the use of a minor 3rd or minor 2nd and their inversions. The second section draws to a close at m.32, returning to the tonic harmony of the key. With the first and second sections complete, the work now proceeds into a developmental section. Mm.33–84 largely consists of development of the two themes by manipulation of intervallic content as well as adjusting the placement of the thematic material withing the accompanimental context. This does include juxtaposition of the two themes (though one typicall becomes integrated into to accompaniment) as can be seen between the violin and viola at m.39. Variety is heightened by the introduction of episodic material such as the secondary melody performed by the clarinet at mm.40–41. The Lento section starting at m.53 introduces further rhythmic and metric adjustment of the thematic content. A varied recapitulation occurs at mm.85–113 and is followed by a coda at mm.114–131.

In summer 2001, Bertold Hummel composed the present work as a commission for the Asiago Festival and brought together in the grand dimensions of his 'Fantasy in one movement' - as he himself termed it - for the first time the instruments he had always loved much during his life. Asiago - the letters a-s-a-g, corresponding to the notes a, e-flat, a, g in the German musical scale, open and close the work - is a successful excursion into the complex sound combinations of percussion instruments and the mystical, sensuous tone of the violoncello, whereby the stringed instrument occasionally takes on a percussive role and the percussion is sometimes treated like a bowed. Driving rhythms pursue each other, alternating with meditative moments. Chorale fragments lead to a grand cadenza, in which the instrumentalists have the opportunity, following patterns provided, for free improvisation. The première of this work took place on 5th August, 2001 in the Duomo di S. Matteo in Asiago in northern Italy and was in the hands of Peter Sadlo and Julius Berger, who are amongst the most committed exponents of Bertold Hummel's works.Asiago is an effective examination of the wide range of possible tonal combinations between percussion instruments and the mystic and sensuous colouring of the violoncello, in which the string instrument is at times treated percussively and the percussion instruments in the manner of a string instrument. Furious rhythms alternate with meditative passages and choral fragments culminate in a large-scale cadenza in which the instrumentalists have the opportunity of free improvisation on the basis of specified models.
