A great choice for weddings & receptions! Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

Published by Ndodana-Breen (A0.928493). Migration, dislocation and exile have always been key themes in the historical narrative of the Black experience in South Africa. These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.

Fein, whose father lived at this address on a street in South Philadelphia, she found mystical attachment to this number. When she died, I wrote this piece in her memory, and used these numbers in subtle ways to create the work. Melomanie performed and recorded the work on their CD Flourescence under its original title, Partita 622 [sic]. The harpsichord should be tuned as close to equal temperament as possible if playing with modern instruments, but a slight tinge of mean tone is highly acceptible. Melomanie performed with a viola da gamba but with otherwise modern instruments. Parts are included in the score.

But give me soon cool water, springs from Lake Mnemosyne.)The text, which is being set at the 2nd part of the work, is an invocation of the soul descending to Hades to the guardians of lake Mnemosyne, to allow keeping its memory alive to the next life. Privilege, under tradition, of the initiate souls, counter to that of lake Lethe which led them to eternal oblivion.The two parts of the composition are the equivalent to the watery - metaphysical element of the two lakes - rivers running across Hades. The work is dedicated to the memory of composer's father Ioannis Theodossiou (1917 - 2008) and has been performed by Angelica Kathariou and the Greek Ensemble of Contemporary Music under Valery Oreshkin at Ph. Nakas Concert Hall, Athens, in 2009.

Adamastor was composed in response to another challenge from my friend Sérgio Carolino, to be premiered by Massive Brass Attack, a large brass ensemble, with a narrator. It is my 6th composition on the theme of Imaginary Beings, which continually fascinates me. This time, it is based on the monster of the cape of the storms, in the extreme south of the African continent, whose passage frightened for centuries the Portuguese sailors who wanted to go to the Indian Ocean. I used the texts by Luiz de Camões (LusÃadas) and Fernando Pessoa (Message), under whose narration I create a musical environment in search of the fantastic, the struggle and redemption. An underlying tenor ofthis collection is the complex relationship between the earth and humanity, and metaphorically the discordbetween native and colonial peoples. Bynner captures the essence of these relationships in this way:It is the earth itself that hems you round against intruders alien to the earth, that brings you heaven under a shadowy tree, curves heaven toyour arm and lets you lie close to its living thorn. The crown is yours, not theirs. You know the one divinity, the only death, the offering ofthe heart to the cruel earth, the love, the consummation.The three movements of the work progress from a quiet melancholy to exuberance, from darkness to light. Frahm makes use of an architecturalapproach to music composition in this piece, as in the building of an adobe wall brick by brick. Self-contained musical structures, often in four barunits, are symmetrically arranged as a technique of musical development.
