It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra. I also intended it to be a suitable companion to the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations, also featured on the Jacksonville Symphony's 2014-15 season opener. Keenly aware of Peter's fine soloistic abilities I approached organization of the work around quotations from well known clarinet solos. Here is a fresh, fun and entertaining Theme and Variations on Two National Anthems - New Zealand and United Kingdom to challenge Grade 8+ players. It commences with a whizzy Toccata to get the audience in the mood before announcing the Themes. These lead to a set of Variations, which includes one where the player will need a plunger mute along with ad libitum pitch bends and growling to create a somewhat inebriated feel, all leading to the last energetic movement. When entertaining children or in a less formal setting, the composer has often described each variation, such as Pagliacci (Clown), Jumping Bean, Tarantella and Late for Dinner. The composer invites the player to play straight through or be as entertaining as you want.This piece serves as a great concert or audition item. Enjoy!

Brennan for Solo Euphonium/Baritone with Piano accompaniment This edition is the theme and variations from Rossini's Introduction, Theme and Variations originally for clarinet and orchestra. This version has been performed and recorded by a number of internationally renowned Euphonium soloists. We first published the complete Introduction, Theme and Variations for Euphonium in 1991 and performed it on a 1830s ophicleide and a 1840s square piano in 1993. This edition comes with a shortened introduction,theme and variations. Duration around 8 ½ min. Solo part in treble and bass clef.Message from Sean Brennan:This arrangement, or more correctly transcription, was first published by us in 1991, although its origins go back much further than that. I do remember being transfixed in the 1970s by Richard Stoltzman’s recording of the original form of the work for clarinet and orchestra. I was convinced it would work for Euphonium and that one day there would be players with the technique, and above all musicality, to bring it off. For me, this vision came true in 1994 when we first performed the piece in Birmingham in 2004, and then again 10 years later when David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band recorded the Theme and Variations. Rossini composed the Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet and orchestra in 1810 at the request of a fellow student at the Conservatorio di Bologna. Although the autograph score has been lost, and some musicologists have questioned the authenticity of the work, I find no reason for doubt since Rossini recycled some of the material in later works, and apart from that his evervascent musical personality is abundant from beginning to end.

This work takes two African American Spirituals, I've Been Buked, and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child and weaves them together into a theme and variation which evokes the great cry of the soul whose burden is of the age-old promise of eternal freedom. This work was originally composed for solo piano but has been re-worked for two pianos with very satisfying results. Themes that were lost in the solo piano version can be heard clearly in this version.

The first movement “Tempest” is a representation of the increased frequency and severity of cyclones, hurricanes, and winter storms caused by the effects of climate change. Movement two is called “Devastation”. It begins with the clarinet playing a desolate melody in 5/4 that undergoes four variations through transformation of musical material and scoring. Debate is represented in the third movement that is in an ABA form. The A sections present strong arguments on both sides. The B section represents a regrouping of arguments. The last movement, “Compromise” is the realization of the concessions that need to be made in order for an economically viable solution to addressing the climate change problem. The movement is lyrical and flowing and is designed to represent both acceptance and optimism.

Crosswinds represents a melding of the traditional woodwind sound of the clarinet with digital live electronic techniques, and the piece explores the potential for this relationship in three parts.To begin the piece, the stage performer breathes through the clarinet, which serves to inform the electronic elements to come. This initial breath is captured by the computer program and is modified and reduplicated to create the sonic tone of a soft wind always present beneath the piece to come. This is the first step in uniting the digital and woodwind elements, as the same breath which animates the clarinet also activates the electronics.From this most fundamental element, the breath becomes a single sustained note from which the computer will generate all of its subsequent tones. The impression is one of a mentor relationship, where the traditional instrument provides the tools and the support for the electronic elements. The disposition is contemplative, though it alternates between a subdued easiness and a playful mystery, as if to introduce the digital aspects to the range and variety of the clarinet’s moods. The rapport between the two is hesitant in the first part: the electronics contributing a subtle reverb as the performer teaches the computer dexterity through a number of broad leaps, hinting at but never fully embracing the main motif.As the theme becomes more self-assured, the digital element now produces its own tones, parroting the clarinet melody to signal its readiness to be an equal partner in the conversation. As the clarinet begins the second part of the piece, the computer now provides a harmonizing undercurrent each time it is invited to do so by the performer.In the third part, the electronics play counterpoint to the skill of the clarinetist, the two elements intricately entwined. Jim Pugh's 4 x 2 x 1 is written for Bass Trombone solo with a double Trombone Quartet accompaniment. It is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 8 1/2 minutes in length. Here is what Jim Pugh says about his composition 4 x 2 x 1: Dave Taylor and I have had a long musical association going back to my first recording sessions with him in New York in 1976 and continuing for 30+ years, including, among many things, two Pugh/Taylor Project recordings. When Dave was putting together the 1999 Manhattan School of Music Trombone Day, he asked me to write a piece featuring him along with his invited guest artists, the Four Of A Kind Trombone Quartet and the Vienna Trombone Quartet – hence the title: 4 (quartet) x 2 (two of them) x 1 (1 soloist). I enjoyed the opportunity to feature not only the bass trombone but, at times, the bass trombone trio that the orchestration provides. The piece is loosely in Rondo form. After an initial statement of the Theme, there follows three unrelated Vignettes separated by variations on the original Theme. A brief GP introduces an improvisation from the bass trombone soloist leading to the final statement of the Theme. The score reflects the correct positioning of the players, left to right, with the two quartet bass trombones on either end of the group and the two first tenor players in the middle, flanking the bass trombone soloist. A little aside here, the tenor trombone solo beginning in measure 77 was specifically written for another dear friend, colleague and collaborator, Joe Alessi. It was a great thrill and honor to have been asked to write music for not only Dave but also two of the best trombone quartets in existence at that time, knowing that anything I wrote would be so beautifully performed. This piece was recorded on the Signum Records CD: The Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble Plays The Music of James Pugh and Daniel Schnyder.

The first movement is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be seen to be related to my Second Symphony ‘Johannes Angelos’. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the last movement, one at a time the winds find a new kind of music resembling fragments of a hymn – at first hesitantly, but soon gaining in strength and confidence. Fast-moving triplets start to appear and the music reaches a joyful and ecstatic conclusion. Olli Mustonen.
