Concert Note:The Five Poems of Melissanthi, in the English translation of Diana Maynard, comprise a complete vocal cycle of five poems set to music as a posthumous tribute by the composer to the Athenian poet Melissanthi (1910-1991), in the manner of the old tombeaux of the Baroque era, a tradition also used by many composers of the first half of the 20th century. This composer confirms, with reference to his own experience of Melissanthi's poetry these five from among her many poems have made a such a great impact on my composing that I felt the need to dedicate these musical pages to her.The evocative poetic expressions of Melissanthi, whose real name was Eve Chougia-Skandalaki, and the mysterious atmospheres invoked by David Solomons' music introduce the listener to an ethereal and metaphysical dimension, allowing us a glimpse into the unknown and the intangible. A recurring theme, which unites the five lyrics by an invisible thread, is an incessant fluctuation between the real and the unreal, between the known and the unknown and between reality and unreality. The inevitable abandonment of the mind to the seductive charms of the surreal creates an extraordinary parallelism with lines from a great poet of the past…così tra questa/immensità s'annega il pensier mio:/e il naufragar m'è dolcein questo mare[…so in this/immensity my thoughts drown:/ and to be shipwrecked is sweetfor me in this sea.](Giacomo Leopardi, L'Infinito, 1819).Both the performance and the enjoyment of the Five Poems therefore require particular emotional involvement, in an overall picture where every single note is a tiny but essential constituent of a larger and more complex musical architecture. The harmonic structure of the five compositions presents a substantial homogenity of formulation even within the various rhythmicalsolutions selected, with their repeated returns to themes and chords. The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, is a composition for organ by, according to the oldest sources, German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and is one of the most widely recognisable works in the organ repertoire. The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano,baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music.The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. Rather, it takes herbeautiful words, and the fundamentals of her visions, and attempts to create a new narrative andspiritual experience from them.This is the full score. Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet (Concerto per il Clarino) in E-flat major was written in 1796 for his friend Anton Weidinger. Weidinger invented a keyed Trumpet which could play chromatically. The Concerto is the first of its kind because of this new technique and Haydn includes melodies and scales in the middle and low register, unknown to the earlier valveless instruments. The work is in the traditional three movements, Fast-Slow-Fast exploiting scales, arpeggios, trills, legato and marcato techniques. Justin Bland has skillfully arranged this great work for Solo Trumpet, 9-part Brass Ensemble and Timpani. Instrumentation is: Solo Trumpet in E-Flat, Trumpet in E-flat, 2 Trumpets (Cornets) in B-flat, Flugelhorn, Horn, 2 Trombones, Euphonium, Tuba and Timpani. The work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Listen to this piece here     During the spring of 2014 four of Jupiter’s moons captured my imagination with their distinctive features as well as the powerful myths associated with each name. For Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io the musical ideas I would use for each became clearer the more I researched. I chose a mixed choir to convey these ideas as the human voice can convey the awe and unknown of space more convincingly than most instruments. Each movement is intended as a vignette evoking what impacted me the most about each moon: I. Europa     Able to drive Jupiter wild with her beauty, Europa was stolen away by the god and proved bountiful to her captor. The moon may have the potential to support life and is now a primary target of our scientific efforts. This movement celebrates this vitality with driving rhythms supporting a soothing melodic line. II. Ganymede      This movement is a lament for the youth and beauty that once had male and female lovers pining for Ganymede. The moon that shares his name, however, has lost its youth and has been declared geologically dead. Written for the males of the chorus this movement features stacking triads and evokes our past where the highest and most beautiful male voices were adored.  III. Callisto      Nearly killed by her own son after Hera (Jupiter’s wife) spitefully transformed her into a bear, Callisto was a beautiful nymph who Jupiter set amongst the stars as Ursa Major. The moon itself has had its share of harm: in the heavy bombardment period it was impacted multiple times by large objects, the many craters of which are visible. I wrote this movement as if it were a reassuring lullaby and is to be performed by the female voices. A solo oboe* carries the melody over thick chords and is later intertwined with the choir.         - *While oboe is the original intent for this movement a flute or violin would make for an acceptable substitution. IV. Io     Io is a woman who suffered greatly under Jupiter’s lust and the bitterness of Hera’s jealousy. This moon represents the frustrations of suffering with its hundreds of active volcanoes and undying rumblings beneath the surface. Because of this it is one of the most tumultuous objects in our galaxy.  The choir churns forth with motives based off of diminished chords until the pressure built up can no longer be contained – eruption is imminent.- Matthew NunesWindsor, August 2014.

It has been suggested that the inspiration for the title could have stemmed from a painting depicting a snowy landscape. This was an extremely popular backdrop among Impressionist artist like Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley; the latter painted Snow at Louveciennes.No 12 Minstrels This is the final prelude of Book One.  Debussy delivers a surprising and humorous gem that is a tribute to the performing minstrel groups which started to appear in Europe around 1900. The music of the minstrels included many contemporary jazz elements such as ragtime and blues, rhythms which were incorporated into the music of quite a few fascinated European composers. This prelude cleverly captures the frenzy of the quick-change minstrel act and their rhythmic excitement, opening with a banjo-like theme supported by uncharacteristically blatant dominant to tonic pedals in G Major. We also hear a brief sentimental song and a recurrent drum theme before the prelude comes to a satisfying close with a hymn- like plagal cadence.

The ballet was to be danced as an interlude in the new opera Le finte gemelle by Niccolò Piccinni.[1] The opera was a flop and closed after four performances.
