Published by Rudy Volkmann (A0.1005641). The William Wallace Gilchrist Piano Trio in G Minor is a monumental, and historically significant work. In 1990, while chairman of the music department of Paine College, I spent a week doing research on a project in the Philadelphia Free Library. In the course of that project, I stumbled upon an unpublished major chamber piece by one of America’s first homegrown Romantic composers, William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916). The find was a vellum (ink on onion skin) working score and parts - working score in that there were changes made on the pages (assumed to be in the composer’s own handwriting) of Gilchrist’s first piano trio. I had other projects at hand, so it was 2005 before I finished editing and annotating the score and parts, presented here. I encourage the reader to refer to the editorial notes in preparing this piece for performance.

This is a transcription for trombones of the complete William Tell Overture, by Gioacchino Rossini as arranged for the Szeged Trombone Ensemble (SETREN). In reimagining the work for trombone octet, American composer P. F. Strohm has kept the piece in the original orchestral keys, and retained all the flourish and drama of the original work. The opening Dawn and Storm, the lovely Pastorale, and the touchstone Finale are all there. This tour de force work comes in two different versions, this one for eight players (as arranged for SETREN), and one for large ensembles of 16 or more players (as arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir). Both versions have eight parts, and are intended for trombone ensembles with the highest levels of technique and musicianship. Advanced level of difficulty, with a performance time of 11:45. Following the lines of the Spike Jones recording of the William Tell Overture, the approximation is similar to the original beginning, and after that, it is my own for the UK brass band set up. Many fx required here, gargling in harmony is one, tuned pots and pans another, shouting and screaming and canine imitation also needed and the bashing of tin drinks trays. Undoubtedly a 100% entertainment concert show-stopper and was used once at BIC Gateshead by the Fairey Band. Make Em' Laugh.

The oratorio is for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, Baritone, and Bass Vocal Soloists, Mixed Choir, Mixed Chorus, and Orchestra with Organ.
