Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881250). Silent Guns of Sacrifice and Fortitude for clarinet and percussion was composed in commemoration of Fort Negley in Nashville, Tennessee. Fort Negley was a significant fixture during the US Civil War, particularly in regards to the Battle of Nashville. While Nash was researching Fort Negley, he discovered an article that described it as silent guns of fortitude, thus the title. This work holds its significance in the unique instrumentation used as well as the rhythm. Since the piece is written for clarinet and African percussion, specifically tom-toms and conga drum, rhythm is highly emphasized. The piece has a standard slow-fast-slow-fast movement scheme. The first and third movements are slow and the second and last movements are faster and have a dance-like feel to them. The final movement in particular was influenced by a song from the Boys Choir of Kenya.

I listened for several minutes and amazingly never grew tired of the old tune. Between the percussive nature of the instrument and the unique intervals the out-of-tune comb robotically produced, I could not help but imagine what the tune would sound like when played by the large, rotating drum found on so many carillons. I remember visiting Belgium and seeing these extremely large automatic-playing drums. They resembled so much, on a larger scale, the music boxes I had been so intrigued by since I was a child. The human desire for and fascination in automatic music has long been a part of our musical tradition. While this dream has long since been achieved, these short etudes celebrate the bond between two past efforts to make this fascination a reality: the music box and the carillon.”Adam Lenhart, 2024Performance Notes These short etudes are written to be practiced and performed on any octave of your instrument. You may find certain etudes are even more effective when displaced, depending on the timbre of the carillon in question. Repeats may be executed indefinitely; upon repeating, you may choose to transpose to one octave higher/lower if desired. Let these short pieces provide a foundation to improvise upon, or as an exercise in ornamentation. After a final repeat or variation, some etudes provide a final bar or chord. Titles that do not should treat the repeat as a double bar line.

BOUNCE ETUDES for Solo Timpani is geared towards the college undergraduate or graduate level timpanist.This three movement piece is approximately nine minutes in length. Each movement uses set pitches for each of the four drums. In the first movement, one might imagine some spherical objects that seem to bound along and propel themselves through space and time.Time is suspended for a brief period as the second movement begins. Here objects seem to float in space. The music is interrupted by a quick, fleeting scherzo section. After this music runs its course, the 'floating music returns. Skipping is the best way to describe the third movement. Here the music is mostly driving and aggressive, but at times the music is quite gentle. With a hasty flourish, BOUNCE ETUDES concludes.

These pieces, originally written for Trumpets and Drums, were published in 1884 when John Philip Sousa was in his fourth year as Director of the Marine Band.This small collection has now been arranged with eight different groupings in mind: two trumpets, trumpet/horn, trumpet/trombone, two horns, horn/trombone, two trombones, trombone/tuba, and two tubas. As these versions are all in the same key, less likely pairings such as trumpet/tuba and horn/tuba can be performed with players viewing their respective parts. I intend this arrangement to be useful to instructors for multiple reasons: learning clefs, mastering partials, studying form and construction on a small scale, and testing memorization. The multiple versions allow instructors continued use as their students’ needs develop. Of course, wherever trombone is named the euphonium is readily substituted. Treble clef readers should use the Trumpet parts, while Bass clef readers can use the Trombone parts.

I have lived near mountains, near oceans, and visited some of the most beautiful places in the world, but none of those places have ever felt as much like home as Nebraska. Nebraska, My Heartland incorporates the poetry of both Willa Cather, the famous Nebraskan poet and writer who helped the rest of America gain an appreciation for the pioneer life, and Veronica Torraca-Bragdon, a contemporary poet and friend whose heart will always belong to Nebraska. Cather’s poem, Prairie Spring was chosen because it vividly portrays the struggles of the pioneers who originally settled here, yet juxtaposes this struggle with youthful determination, and the optimism and enthusiasm brought about by hope. Veronica’s poem, titled Nebraska, is the centerpiece for the fanfare and celebration of a state that abounds with success in all of the ways that make Nebraska a great place to live. The music begins as the sun is about to rise and burst forth with the promise of a new day. It speaks of Nebraska’s natural beauty and landscapes while the sweet song of the Western Meadowlark, our state bird, drifts on the wind. Next, the changing seasons and thriving spirit of Nebraska’s people are portrayed with an energetic, youthful melody leading into a celebratory sesquicentennial fanfare. But as the seasons change, the listener is reminded that to thrive is also to persevere, and soon a storm begins to loom. First the rolling thunder, then the rain, and finally the full devastation of nature’s fury are realized by the combined forces of both ensembles. This is an arrangement of the famous work, scored for flexible ensemble in C. It is also available in A. This series has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the ever-changing ensemble combinations that primary and secondary schools and other instrumental ensembles face. Because certain instruments are more comfortable in playing in certain keys, each work will be offered in two keys. This should allow for the music director to choose the key most suitable for the instrumental combination. Each piece consists of five core instrumental parts: 2 treble, 1 alto, tenor and bass. All parts will have a number of transpositions suitable for the instruments that are capable of playing those parts, eg, Part 2 will have parts for violin, B flat clarinet and trumpet, and E flat alto sax.  This will save music directors' time in having to write out additional parts. Optional parts are included for tuned and untuned percussion, guitar (chords) and bass guitar (notation and TAB), a keyboard part appropriate to the difficulty level, and a rehearsal piano part which is a fuller realisation of the piece and could be played by a more advanced student or the music director. If the numbers of players on each part allows, the music director can feel free to 'solo' instruments and vary the orchestration, especially on repeats, to create variety in instrumental colour.
