This is a book of popular pieces arranged for duet; it comprises both volumes from the '15 Duets for Fun' series, plus the '21 Christmas Duets for Fun' as well, making a total of 51 duets in this set. The difficulty levels range from early-intermediate to advanced, and should provide something for everyone to enjoy. The pieces have been arranged so that both parts are interesting throughout - they often interweave and take on many roles within the music. Stabat Mater Dolorosa (Vivaldi) This is an arrangement of the beautiful first part of the Stabat Mater by Vivaldi for brass band. The solo voice is given to the flugelhorn as it matches the deeper, richer tone of the alto. The band is split into concertante and ripieni groups, The first consisting of Solo cornet, Solo horn, Euphonium and Eb Bass with the rest of the band providing the ripieni. The score is organised in the same way. I thought it would be good to place the concertante group on one side of the stage, with the soloist and have the ripieni group on the other - if there's enough room. Obviously the scoring is very thin wherever the soloist is playing, but the whole piece needs to be quiuet and coontemplative.

Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883787). Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in D Minor is much overlooked by his more popular works. Written for 3 solo instruments (2 vln’s & Vc) and string continuo I have explored the works more antiphonal prospects for brass band and completely changing the band’s seating format to encompass a large arc formed in front and to the side of the audience to give a stereophonic picture left and right. All sections and soloists get to shine in this (2 movement work at present) work which fits as a great opener at a church venue, and dare I say a baroque work such as this fits right into a Christmas programme?
