Published by Keir C Crawley (A0.972028). ‘Blueshift’ is the continuation of a number of ideas and experiences, the first of which is the need to compose exciting and challenging music for the classroom. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or 3 budding musician into the musical world of film scores and minimalism albeit minimalism with a small ‘m’. Combining moto perpetuo with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. As such ‘Blueshift’ should be playable by students from Year 4 or 5 upwards, either in its entirety as written live or to a backing track. The title comes from the idea that as light (in this case the light of the Andromeda Galaxy) approaches a fixed point it shifts towards the blue end of the spectrum. For the purposes of both story telling and a cross-curricular link to science ‘Blueshift’ charts the journey of the Andromeda Galaxy (represented by the ever present 5-8 ostinato) towards our own Milky Way Galaxy and what happens on route.

Swinging Shepherd Blues is a well-known tune by Moe Koffman, originally titled Blues a la Canadiana and renamed Swinging (or 'Swingin') Shepherd Blues in l957 when it was recorded by the composer, playing the flute, for the LP Hot and Cool Sax. . A vocal rendition, with lyrics by Rhoda Roberts and Kenny Jacobson, has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, and more recently by Natalie Cole. The tune has been recorded by various Canadians, from Oscar Peterson to the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. Koffman used Swinging Shepherd Blues as his signature tune until 2000. Second Line, some time called Joe Avery’s Blues, is a song written by the eponymous trombonist that is popular at second line parades. It is usually played at wedding receptions, parties, parades and at the end of a jazz funeral. The song is based on a simple 12-bar blues form and has a very sing-able melody. Before the melody starts, Trombone 1 plays a loud, high call to which the crowd responds, Hey! The group then proceeds to play the melody while second line parade festivities ensue. This arrangement, written at the Adv. Intermediate level for Trombone Quintet/Choir, is a fun and easy to perform tune for students or professionals. Solos for Trombone 1, Trombone 4, and Bass Trombone may be played as written or improvised with the included chord symbols. Optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set parts are also included for a more realistic performance. Performance time approx. 2 min. 40 se.
