Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna’s most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna’s skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of them I. Groundbreaking The first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen’s Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen’s was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues-from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire-before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord. II. Steffl Steffl, the nickname for Stephansdom’s soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom’s north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna’s skyline. III. 1945 As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom’s roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom’s great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945. IV. Anton Pilgrim Anton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen’s organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese’s love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna’s most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

The orchestral parts and vocal score of a Neo-Baroque, medium-sized, large scale composition for 4 vocal soloists, mixed chorus in 4 to 8 voices, and full orchestra with organ, setting the traditional canticle text, mostly with church modes and alternating polyphonic intricacies with solemn, intense or profound moments. It would work both for worship and in concert, as it includes powerful outbursts, elaborate counterpoint, and also soft and humble moments, while avoiding any harsh excesses of modernism. Total duration: 46 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The audio sample is the 3rd movement. The first two choruses, in 4 parts, follow the general outline of the Baroque French overture: a solemn introduction followed by an elaborate fugue. The 3rd movement is a solemn arioso for bass, followed by a grand chorus in 4 and 5 parts. The 4th movement is an arioso for tenor, followed by a complex chorus in 5 parts. The 5th movement is a suite of two ariosos for alto and soprano, followed by a grand, but brief chorus in 6 parts, and then by a mysterious instrumental evocation of the Last Judgment. The 6th movement is a vocal quartet a cappella, based on a well-known Orthodox hymn and alternated with a refrain for chorus in 7 parts and organ, then followed by a grand choral complex ended in humble supplication. The final, 7th movement is a grand motet for double chorus and orchestra, with four themes more and more intricately combined, up to the majestic coda treated in quadruple counterpoint.

Its dynamic contrast and opposition between counterpoint and homophonic sections serve this purpose. It features several contrapuntal sections at the beginning (part II), end (parts VIII and IX) and interlude (part IV), aimed to imitate the instrumental performance. It’s not a challenging arrangement, but should some of these parts be complicated for the choir, they can be skipped safely.This arrangement only comprises lyrics from part IV, excluding part VII for the sake of brevity and simplicity.Commissioned by Coro da Rá, a choir specialized in jazz and Brazilian music. A musical monument: the first composition to employ dynamics Minimum Instrumentation: 4 trumpets, 3 French Horns, 2 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone, 1 tuba. Arranged in two antiphonal choirs. Suggested instrumentation: 8 trumpets, 9 Horns, 6 Tenor Trombones, 2 Bass Trombone, 4 Tubas. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

It may be played as a double-choir piece for handbell and handchime choirs or by handbell choir alone. The up-tempo meter alternates between 4/4 and 6/8, and the handbell part includes the use of mallets, ring touch, martellato, and martellato lift. A restful, lyrical middle section follows, using a new melody that begins softly then blossoms into a rich and glorious sound. The piece concludes in its original up-beat, rhythmic style. Te Deum Laudamus is translated as We Praise Thee, O God, making this piece suitable throughout the church year, as well as for festival or concert use.
