The work is in five movements, each a musical interpretation of a painting by Pablo Picasso. Fifteen years later Nancy told me she has a new group called the Emmelos Ensemble and they are planning to perform the Schubert Octet in F major, D. 803, in the spring of 2012. She asked me if I would be interested in writing a companion work with the same instrumentation as the Schubert. She also mentioned that Schubert’s inspiration was based on Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, opus 20. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. My Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) is, like the Beethoven and the Schubert, in six movements. He was the Pianist for the Isis Piano Trio and Ballet Creations and is now in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician having performed with artists such as Dame Sarah Connolly and Tasmin Little. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt. Murray’s compositions have been recorded by The Fibbonnaci Sequence and Piers Lane among others with reviews such as ‘Corruscating’ (Independent) and ‘Highly imaginative’ (The Sunday Times). Jeux d'enfants (Children's Games) Op. 22, is a suite of twelve miniatures composed by Georges Bizet for piano four hands in 1871 The entire piece has a duration of about 20 to 23 minutes. Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) studied composition with Walter Braunfels and Heinrich Lemacher. He taught as a professor of music theory at the Conservatoire of Cologne and ranks among the most important German church and organ music composers of the 20th century. His extensive chamber music oeuvre which shows parallels to contemporary composers such as Hindemith, Genzmer or Pepping is little known. The Quintet Op. 50 is characterised by its neoclassical form, free tonality as well as rhythm in motion, setting the performer rewarding instrumental tasks. The Wind Quintet Op. 50 was composed in 1981 and is now published for the first time. The movements are: 1. Molto sostenuto/Allegro - 2. Adagio molto - 3. Scherzo - 4. Lento/Allegro.

The suite exists in versions for solo piano and piano four-hands. Weihnachtsbaum does not demand great virtuosity, and it has been described as a distant relation of Schumann’s Kinderszenen and Debussy’s Children’s Corner.It occupies an unusual place in Liszt’s output, and it may be for these reasons that it has received relatively little attention from performers.Liszt dedicated Weihnachtsbaum to his first grandchild Daniela von Bülow (1860-1940; daughter of Cosima and Hans von Bülow). Daniela had accompanied her grandfather to Rome due to his frail condition.The first performance was on Christmas Day 1881 in Daniela’s Rome hotel room.This was the day on which her mother Cosima always celebrated her birthday, although she was actually born on Christmas Eve.
