Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.

After the Daddy tells the child what angels are, he says, They call them angels in Heaven (beautiful spot in the son), but we call them MOTHERS down here. Such a tear-jerker, I think!!

My Child is a sweet, sensitive and endearing work for SSAA women's choir, piano accompaniment and flute. The flute part is highly featured. I wrote the work at the request of one of my friends in the choir that I sing in (she is a flautist and her mother is our accompanist). Searching for inspiration, I reflected on my grandmothers, whom I never knew, and my own children, now grown. The tenderness of childhood and motherhood is so ephemeral - like the wind and the sun.

Living almost entirely in his imagination as a small boy, the seeds of the world of Narnia are already beginning to grow in his writing and drawings. Little Lea, his childhood home, provides the setting for the early scenes. Following the death of his mother the young Jack has his first experience of school and England. He endures with fortitude the harsh regime of boarding school and begins to recognise the value of friendship, mutual support and the courage that children can show in adversity. He returns to Ireland and to Campbell College – a much more positive experience. Illness brings his attendance at Campbell to an end. Returning to Little Lea, Jack imagines the world of fairies and dwarves, a world beyond our own. He returns to school in England and comes under the influence of a variety of teachers. Expelled from Malvern, Jack next falls under the influence of his great mentor, Professor Kirkpatrick – the model for the Professor of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Jack’s Journey concludes with the anticipated arrival of a great hero, the hero of the first of the Narnian Chronicles, Aslan, the lion. ‘Jack’s Journey’ gives opportunity for young actors, (supported if desired by adults, taking the parts of the grown-ups.) At that time the composer was very ill and her mother outlined her thoughts about life and some of the regrets (we all have in a lifetime). This struck a resonant chord within the composer and this work is the product of the anguish caused by the conversation. Composed for clarinet and piano (also playable with harp) this heart-rending, beautiful work explores the different stresses and strains and moods of childhood and adolescence and is essentially autobiographical. It reflects the heartbreak of separation from her family when she was sent to boarding school which indeed seemed like incarceration in a lost childhood.
