The beautiful prayer AVE MARIA, melody by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) based on PRELUDE IN C by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Adapted beautifully for pedal harp, with alto voice (vocal range from G below middle C, to the second E above middle C). Voice part could be sung by a baritone an octave lower than written. Flute, violin or oboe (playing an octave higher than written) may be substituted for the voice. There is an optional cello part (doubling the low notes of the harp part), so it can be played as a duo OR a trio. Perfect for any Christian occasion: Christmastime, funerals, weddings (especially the 'Marian presentation' of some Catholic weddings, in which the bride offers flowers to a statue of Virgin Mary). About 4 minutes and 20 seconds long with the repeat (or 2 minutes and 10 seconds long if you don't take the repeat, but go directly to the second ending). The PDF includes ALL three parts. The harp part also shows the vocal part on a small staff. There is a separate part (included) for the voice (or flute or violin or oboe) and a separate part (included) for the cello. The layout is such that if you can print out double-sided, the harp part and the vocal part have front and back covers. The cello part is only one page. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.6535-E). Marian Variations for harp solo was written for and is dedicated to harpist Ruth Inglefield, Professor of Harp at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1975, I was a student in Dr. Inglefield's Music History class at Bowling Green State University, where I was pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Composition. Dr. Inglefield arranged for me to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which I did from 1975-78, making me one of her last composition students and utterly changing my life. This piece is written in gratitude for Dr. Inglefield's vision and generosity.The work is based on my own Ave Maria for SATB chorus which was commissioned in 1991 by the San Francisco male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Each of the four variations is based on the main melody of the Ave Maria and is separated by interludes built of contrasting material, all leading to a literal statement of the motet after the fourth variation. Thus, though the piece is largely intended for use in solo recitals, it could be played as part of a liturgical service where the motet is also sung. I am grateful to Sonja Inglefield for her expert and detailed editing of the score. Harpists Steve Main and Michael Rado also offered valuable suggestions. -David Conte.

The current media call this style of music Spiritual Minimalism. This particular composition utilizes the centering 'ah' of Buddhism, the meditative resting periods of Zen, the plainchant of Christianity, the minimalism of New Age, and more. The lyrics quote only the first 3 phrases of the traditional Ave Maria text. These 6 words are in common across most usages regardless of region or religion or purpose and impart a broader blessing. These 6 words are interspersed throughout the piece with the Ave (Hail) high in the range for celebration, Gratia (Grace) mid-range for acceptance, and Dominus (God) low in the range for humility. The vocal range of the song is thus quite large - a full two octaves. The High version goes from a B flat below the Treble Staff to an A flat above the Treble Staff. The Low version (a third lower) goes from a low G to a high F. The accompaniment is a circling minimalist 2 chord ostinato for the entire piece. Whether for personal meditation or public performance, this piece will relax, focus, and recharge all who perform it and hear it. 2 pages, 3:45 minutes attached is a live recording of the High voice version with piano accompaniment; cello plays exactly the same part as the minimalist piano but the cello will give it a warmer sound than the piano.

Firstly, we have the version that exactly follows the harmonic scheme set forth by J. S. Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 27. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke.

I have taken it and turned it into an octet and put it in the keys of Eb and Bb. The key of Eb has less crunch to it and requires very strong Euphonium players, while the key of Bb has more crunch, but really lays well for a strong low Tuba section. While it is written for an octet, I truly believe that it is much more suited for Tuba and Euphonium choir. It is arranged in a way that will really show off tone and how big of a sound the group can achieve.
