Polpis Dreaming (2002) for contrabass saxophone and piano was commissioned for and isdedicated to Jay C. Easton. The work was inspired by Easton's championing of the more unusual members of the saxophone family, particularly the contrabass with its incredibly powerful and deep sound. This work is recorded on Easton's SoLow CD.The title refers to Polpis, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts that borders Nantucket Harbor with a variety of smaller inlets. This work is one of a variety of pieces connected to the landscape of Nantucket. In the case of this piece, the extra-musical image was one of the incredible depth of the ocean (perhaps parallel to the depth of the contrabass saxophone's sound) slowly being explored/achieved through the means of inlets.The work's basic material comes from the saxophone's opening gesture, which moves upwardfrom the bottom of the instrument. The pitch material and interval content that are transformed throughout the work are presented in that motion.The first section of the work is declamatory, with lyric impulses. The material of the work is unfolded as the sounds of the piano's resonance, combined with the tone of the contrabass saxophone are explored. A faster middle section occurs next in which the harmonic gestures and transformations are always moving towards greater consonance. After the middle section, there is a return to the mood of the opening, although the material of the middle section also appears in transformation.

Leaving starts us on our travels, and you can feel the slightly optimistic viewpoint initially as the saxophone and piano playfully sing. A little later however it's as though doubts and anxieties have crept in... (included on Grade 7 ABRSM exams from 2022 onwards).Changing Landscapes (movement 2) propels us forward through twists and turns, almost as if the thoughts are in equal turmoil as the scenery that rushes by. By the end of the movement however, it's very much like these have been resolved, and a peace and newly found optimism is evident in the final movement. O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass†was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed†as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.†I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy†for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road†for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. Facing West is drawn from the Children of Adam book from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. The full title of the poem is Facing West From California's Shores. Though Whitman never visited California, his biographer Justin Kaplan made the insightful observation that he imagined California's shores to be the starting point for a journey through time and culture. Here was Walt, 'a child, very old,' facing home again, looking over to it, joyous, as after long travel, growth, and sleep, asking: 'But where is what I started for, so long ago?/And why is it yet unfound?' The invitation from the International Orange Chorale to compose a piece in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge led me easily and naturally to this great poem. The tone of Facing West is rich and complex, and draws on one of Whitman's favorite themes of using travel to distant lands as a metaphor for spiritual development. In his poem, Whitman strikes notes of reflection, of longing for adventure, and ultimately ends with a question. The continuing relevance of this question is for me beautifully addressed by the contemporary American writer Edmund White in his 1980 book States of Desire. To paraphrase somewhat, White writes: California is where dreams may come true, and the problem it presents is whether, after all, we wanted these particular dreams to be fulfilled - or would we have preferred others? Did we know what price these dreams would exact? Did we anticipate the ways in which they would unsuit us for the business of daily life? Or should our notion of daily life itself be transformed? For Americans, California's coast is as far as one can go in establishing new roots and new ways of living. As a transplanted Midwesterner who has made California his home for nearly three decades, I experience the Golden Gate Bridge as a beautiful monument to the aspirations and dreams of a restless and inventive people, qualities that Whitman's poem captures perfectly. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

After Queen performed the song in South America in 1981, the version from their live album Live Killers reached number 1 in the singles chart in Argentina and Brazil, and stayed in the charts in both countries for an entire year Mercury wrote it on the piano and guitar first, and Brian May rearranged the song for acoustic 12-string guitar for live performances, also lowering the key by a minor third. May contributed occasional guitar phrases to the original recording and played the swooping harp glissandos by pasting together multiple takes of single chords.

Published by Jasper Swank (A0.1375374). “This series of 10 short pieces was made as a stub for filling the absence of multi-part kazoo pieces. According to the composer, the classical world has been acting deprecatory towards new instruments. First, the clarinet, then the saxophone, and still many more are not accepted by conservative listeners. It’s time that people start to discover the beauty of new timbres, giving traditional settings and forms new entertaining context. Swunk believes himself the chosen advocate to bring instruments like the otamatone, the stroh violin, jazz harpsichord, the turkey, and, yes, the kazoo to the classical audience.â€These words were stated under the pseudonym Funky Swunk at the online premiere of a selection of these pieces as performed by members of the Untitled Virtual Ensemble. After this premiere, an extra piece was added (â…¨. Bonus Track), making the suite a nice uneven 11 short pieces.The goal of this collection of pieces is in part to show that the kazoo can in fact be used for a new sound in a classical setting. A well-written piece will still sound as such, regardless of the instruments used. However, the main aspect of performing either a selection of these pieces (in any order) or the suite as a whole should be the fun in performing. Of course, this shouldn’t be at the cost of the musical quality, but I do wholeheartedly hope these pieces bring as much joy to the musicians and any audience as it brought me while composing them.Included in package • Full Score with introduction.
