Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903774). This piece is inspired by the Confucius Birthday Ceremony, probably dating from the Chou Dynasty, 1046-221BCE. The music, called Shao Music, has been played in all its magnificence since then. The event is highly choreographed and controlled musically, aiming to reflect and celebrate Confucius' philosphies of peace. Traditional Chinese music is primarily melodic, and western ears may feel the lack of harmonic richness. A player could read out the Confucius quotation at the beginning of each movement. Flute or Oboe, Oboe, Bassoon, optional Narrator. How to play... The melody and some of the bass line consists of the rows of pitch-classes in verses 1 and 2 of Honouring Confucius (Ta Tsai Kung-Tzu) I have introduced rhythmic variety, harmony and some phasing and use the traditional pentatonic scale as rendered by the Chinese classical music instruments-drums, bells, flutes, and strings. The flute symbolises balance. A man without...is a very short saraband, a courtly dance using all the pitches of verse 2 in order. It was by music... uses major triad fanfares where possible, with an occasional glissando. Music produces a special... is a sensuous waltz: as with most of the movements, I have shamelessly used a tonal harmony under the notes of verse 4 (illustrated). When music and courtesy... plays the notes of Verse 6 in quintuple time over a drone. If one should desire...is a barefoot parade (gymnopedie?) in Satie's style. Duration 7 minutes.

RUSALKAS and MEN Soprano (mostly wordless, D up to A), Baritone (G# up to G), Oboe or Violin, and Cello or Bassoon.The instrument parts in the score are easily used for rehearsal on keyboard. Here are three songs about men's encounters with rusalkas (water-nymphs) in Slavic myth. Siren Song: a man describes his narrow escape from death. Lyrics by Sue Edgar. The Man’s melodies based on two Slavic folk tunes. The rusalka sings my own melody. King of the Underwater World: a very lucky man sings of his being favoured, made king and cosseted by a rusalka. He uses the Ukrainian dorian scale, the rusalka aeolian. Rusalka (Pусалка) by Alexander Pushkin: The baritone is the storyteller. For him I use D mixolydian alternating with b minor, but the rusalka mostly sings in half-whole octatonic. 26 minutes for all three songs.

They are southern Italian folk dances. For this piece, I assume we have a woman happily singing the folk song Santa Lucia, lauding the attractions of Naples, when she is bitten by a tarantula wolf spider. She screams, suffering hysteria and pain, and must now frantically dance, perhaps all night, because this is the only way to recover. Finally she can return to the calm singing.DURATION: 3 minutes or so, depending on how fast the performers can play and how many repeats they have to make.

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1512796). This depicts aspects of spider life, and the reactions of an arachnophobe. In the introduction, we hear the 12- note-row (yes, it's pure 12-note serial, but there's no need totell them this). Then very long pauses as the spider waits for prey to approach. Frenetic activity leads to the capture of prey and its consumption. The arachnophobe (instruments and players) scream on seeing the spider. A relatively consonant waltz depicts the halting, tapping, very careful, mating dance of the male. She eats him anyway. Next we limn the hundreds of babies hatching and abseiling down on their threads. This of course makes the arachnophobe scream again. Don't use for a wedding, but perhaps for that murder-mystery evening or ghost hunt?DURATION: 4 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

WITCHES’ FIREDANCE at BELTANE String quartet. Beltane continues to be observed throughout Ireland and Scotland. The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

The British army had two march tunes used to show contempt for a delinquent soldier, one for bugles, one for fifes. Here, I use both, as well as an original Dead March. Lyrics are from Kipling's poem Danny Deever.MOON MEDITATION Many cultures use brass instruments to aid meditation. Sets a poem by Wordsworth: I took a few liberties with the words.EXORCISM: This is based on Buddhist ceremonies. The idea seems to be that if one is possessed, the invading spirit is a guest from another realm and should be welcomed. Om, many padme, hum is a favourite chant.. To my ear, they used a wholetone scale. All four songs: 18 minutes.

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1425377). VIVALDI RV 443 PICC CONCERTO ARR FOR EB CLARINET AND CLARINET CHOIR. Essential: Eb soloist, Bb1,2,3 or Alto, Bass. Optional Contra-alto, Contrabass. This Concerto in C Major for flautino RV443 dates from1728-29. It was probably composed for the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, the convent/orphanage with which he was affiliated.. The girls of the Pietà were famous throughout Europe for their musical performances. . Since the term “flautino” was not generally used in Vivaldi’s day, scholars have speculated ever since about what instrument Vivaldi had in mind. The leading candidate is the sopranino recorder. However, later in the 18th century the transverse flute replaced the recorder in general use, and a new edition of RV 443 was published for the piccolo, a member of the flute family.There are several passages with only the bass line accompanying, and no figures, so I have realised some of these. Some of the accompaniment rhythm patterns, originally for strings, seem too heavy-footed on clarinets, so I have made a few tiny modifications in them. The cadenza, all the articulations and dynamics are mine. 9 minutes if the soloist is very agile.

Clarinet Choir (Eb, four Bb, Alto, Bass, Contra-alto, Contrabass, works with just Eb, Bb 1,2,3, Bass plus either Bb4 or Alto) The stories about tarantellas are many and varied. They are southern Italian folk dances. For this piece, I assume we have a woman happily singing the folk song Santa Lucia, lauding the attractions of Naples, when she is bitten by a tarantula wolf spider. She screams, suffering hysteria and pain, and must now frantically dance, perhaps all night, because this is the only way to recover. Finally she can return to the calm singing.  3 minutes or so, depending on how fast the performers can play and how many repeats they have to make.

In contrast to my very popular Two Meditations, which were in ancient modes, these use 20thC techniques. Woodland was inspired by a notated motif and mysterious elements found in a tapestry by Libby Morton-Gibson and by the quartal-based Haru No Umi or The Sea in Spring by Michio Miyagi. After I play a game with the scale, every phrase delineates a four-note quartal: classical progressions including a circle of fifths are cunningly concealed within. The rhythms are unpredictable. Use your imagination. The scale game returns in retrograde at the end. Will- o'-the- Wisp is the eerie and elusive flame sometimes formed over marshes. The term is also used to mean an unobtainable wish. I use my octatonic scale.

VENT LIFE represents the weird worms, microrganisms, crabs and fish which survive there. VOLCANO  music describes explosions, falling boulders and terror, and finally mourns the loss of life, devastated landscape and villages. EARTHQUAKE:  the music tries to depict the swaying effect and noise, falling bricks and running feet. More mourning. DURATION: 9minutes.
