Sync, for flute, cello, and bass trio, is a complex piece which includes a variety of time signatures, virtuosic flute lines, driving cello rhythms, and jazz-influenced pizzicato bass lines. The title derives from the phasing that occurs as a result of multiple pulses that align, dis-align, and re-align throughout. The rhythms that drive the piece are heavily syncopated, yet often times, even non-syncopated rhythms are perceived as such as a result of the offsetting phasing of the pulse. The rhythmic figures are constructed as not just a variety of attacks, but also note lengths, which alternate between combinations of accents, legato, and staccato phrases. Each section is glued together using transitions which guide the individual pulses to their next point of alignment. Throughout the bridge sections, all three instruments take on differing roles: the flute plays ethnically influenced over-arching melodies, while the cello underscores the flute with double and triple-stop chords, and the bass maintains a steady but syncopated pulse. Finally, the piece comes to a close with each instrument rallying together as one; the final sync point.

The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight of the year. After the solstice, days gradually get more and more time of light. Post Winter Solstice draws an emotional equivalent to this natural process. It features two themes: one is a long, winding, gloomy melody; and the second is an ascending passage of 9 notes that repeats, but each time it is one note shorter, until it consists of merely two notes. The two themes alternate throughout the piece, each time played by a different instrument and in a different key. While most of the piece is dark and melancholic, it ends on a slightly brighter tone, thus reflecting the notion of “post winter solstice.â€.

ISBN 9790570484355.This quartet was composed during Dvorak's time in America, during a summer vacation in 1893. It was written in Spillville, Iowa, which at the time was home to a large Czech immigrant community. Dvorak seems to have found the natural country surroundings much more to his liking, having spent much of his previous time in the country in New York. The work was written very quickly, being sketched in three days and finished in about two weeks. In this quartet, Dvorak finally seems to find a balance between his melodic invention and a clear structure. Many writers have tried to find specific 'American' features in this work - from pentatonic melodies to native Indian tunes to American birdsong - but in general such specific references are doubted. The first movement moves from passages of great harmonic stillness through a much more dramatic development section that takes the music through fugato section before recapping the original material. The second movement features a simple, pentatonic melody over a pulsing accompaniment. This melody is shared between the highest and lowest parts, before being developed in an extended middle section until the bass flute restates the original tune while the accompaniment thins out completely. The third movement is a variant of a traditional scherzo. It features two tunes, the main melody being a sprightly tune full of off-beats and cross-rhythms. The alternate melody is actually a variant of the main scherzo theme, but in a minor key and at half tempo. The final movement is in a traditional rondo form. The main melody is once more pentatonic, the B section is more lyrical, and the C section is a chorale theme.

Melodies float across the top and bottom of the texture. The middle section switches to simple time with leaping semiquavers in all parts. These two sections alternate until the compound time idea wins and takes the piece to it's conclusion. Some tricky notes and rhythms in the higher parts, the lower ones are simpler.

Sync, for flute, cello, and bass trio, is a complex piece which includes a variety of time signatures, virtuosic flute lines, driving cello rhythms, and jazz-influenced pizzicato bass lines. The title derives from the phasing that occurs as a result of multiple pulses that align, dis-align, and re-align throughout. The rhythms that drive the piece are heavily syncopated, yet often times, even non-syncopated rhythms are perceived as such as a result of the offsetting phasing of the pulse. The rhythmic figures are constructed as not just a variety of attacks, but also note lengths, which alternate between combinations of accents, legato, and staccato phrases. Each section is glued together using transitions which guide the individual pulses to their next point of alignment. Throughout the bridge sections, all three instruments take on differing roles: the flute plays ethnically influenced over-arching melodies, while the cello underscores the flute with double and triple-stop chords, and the bass maintains a steady but syncopated pulse. Finally, the piece comes to a close with each instrument rallying together as one; the final sync point.

Bach’s Suite in B Minor was one of four orchestral Suites written by the great master, and is the one that is particularly beloved of flutes players, notably because of the famous Badinerie that has been a favorite show piece ever since it was written. Here is an arrangement of the entire suite for Flute Quintet or Flute Choir (Three C flutes, Alto and Bass) that captures all of the contrapuntal genius and catchy melodies of the original. This adaptation is not simplified in any way, though at times the first two flute parts alternate carrying the melody as the top two voices in the original score were often presented in unison for flute and violin. A unique feature of this arrangement is the presentation of the phrasing according to wooden flute performance practice of the period. This piece summons up all of the precision, beauty and grandeur of the golden age of the Baroque, and is a noble and worthy addition to any program!

Dvorak's charming and wonderful Bagatelles are rarely performed, because he wrote them for two violins, cello, and harmonium, and who has a harmonium anymore? (They are sometimes performed with substitution of a piano for the harmonium, but the harmonium version is far superior, as the piano lacks the sustaining quality of the harmonium.) But they are a natural for woodwinds! Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has also arranged several other great works for this ensemble. Many of them are now for sale on this webste, and more will be uploaded soon.Note that due to Dvorak's key signatures and the varying tessituras of the parts, the movements sometimes call for oboe and sometimes for English horn, and the clarinet parts alternate between clarinet in B-flat and in A.

Abendlied (Evening Song) is from a cycle of 12 piano duets, Op. 85, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of composition for Schumann. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim took the final number, consisting merely of a completely unpianistic one-handed melody with chordal accompaniment for two hands, and arranged it for violin, oboe or flute. The present arrangement expands that list of instruments to include the Soprano Saxophone, in its infancy at the time the piece was composed. An alternate part for Alto Saxophone is also included. The soaring, free melody is reminiscent of Schumann’s Manfred music, written around the same time. This piece is very demanding in terms of breath control and phrasing.
