A recording by the Pathé Dance Orchestra in late 1914-early 1915 appears to be at a faster tempo - reflected in this arrangement. Programme note:'Carolina Fox Trot' was written by US composer and arranger Will H. Vodery and published as a piano piece in 1914, with a sub-title 'New One Step', and with a front cover description: New Society Dance - Originated by Billy Kent & Jeanette Warner - America's Classiest Dancers. It is possible that the title of the piece was intended to be just 'Carolina', with 'Fox Trot' being a descriptive subtitle. The Fox Trot emerged as a new popular dance in 1914, and was initially danced to ragtime music.Will Vodery is perhaps best known for the vocal and choral arrangements that he created for the original Broadway stage production of the classic musical 'Show Boat' (1927).

J. Ricketts (1881 - 1945) a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since service personnel were, at that time, not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, F. J. Ricketts published his compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford. Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled 'The River Kwai March' for the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. On account of the movie the 'Colonel Bogey March' is often incorrectly credited as the 'River Kwai March'.

Programme note:The Water Music is a collection of orchestral movements composed by George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759). It was first performed on the River Thames in London on 17 July 1717, in response to King George I's request for a concert on the River.The Water Music has been published as three suites, and the Bourrée and Hornpipe appear as movements 7 and 8 in the Suite No. 1 in F major (HMV 348).The Bourrée is a dance of French origin and the Hornpipe is any of several dance forms played and danced in Britain and Ireland from the 16th century onwards.

In her twenties, she composed three ragtime pieces: Pickles and Peppers (1906), Wireless Rag (1909), and Live Wires Rag (1909). After her marriage, she retired from composition, and her compositions were unknown to her remaining family by the 1970s until reporters contacted them.The dedication in the original piano composition reads: Dedicated to the real Live Wire Maurice A. Richmond.The metaphorical use of 'live wire' likely emerged around the year 1900, and applied the words used in electrical circuitry to describe an energetic and unpredictable person.

How Beautiful are the Feet is one of the best loved arias from G F Handel’s oratorio The Messiah. This version is arranged as a solo for Alto Recorder with piano accompaniment.The original 1741 version of The Messiah presented How Beautiful are the Feet as a duet for two altos and choir, but in 1749 Handel revised the piece as a solo aria for soprano. This revision forms the basis for this arrangement. The text is taken directly from the book of Romans in the New Testament.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performances.
