Imagine a place where cultures are blended and people of all races can laugh, play, sing, dance, and even pray together.  Colores is a musical tale in which children show us how to create such a place.A child walks on to a deserted playground, looking for others.  Another child joins.  They introduce themselves and begin to talk to each other.  A third joins the conversation, then another, and another, until there is a large group of children, creating a colorful, contrapuntal cacophony of vocal chatter.  After the introductions and lively conversations, they pause to decide what to do next.  As would be expected, they decide to just play.  They run races, play chase and tag, catch and kickball, and laugh and giggle until their energy is gone.  Settling down, and wondering what to do next, one child begins singing a tune that is familiar.  …but not to all of them.  So, it’s time to teach the song to everyone.The tune is shared, bit by bit, and one by one every child learns it and joins in.  Before it’s over, their full-voiced singing creates a choral tapestry in which every child adds his or her own color to the musical palette.After a brief conversation, they add their renewed energy to the song they just learned, pick up the pace, and dance.  They twist and spin, jump and swing, making up their moves as they go along.  But, as before, their energy wanes.  This time, as they settle down, one child feels so comfortable with these new friends, he chooses to share his faith in the form of a chant — a prayer.Some join his prayer, as others add a familiar religious tune.  They pray and sing, and their separate experiences combine to produce a stirring, blended chorale.  As they finish, the day ends and they quickly reminisce about the blended experiences that are now behind them.  Before they go their separate ways, they share a moment of gratitude for the place where they can be free to be who they are, together.On a musical note, Colores combines multiple scale structures and varying types of vertical harmonies to give the piece its color palette.  Each of the five voices is set in a different mode, with different tonal centers and sets of accidentals.  The harmony combines both traditional tertian chords with secondal, quartal, and quintal structures.The colors within the music are intended to represent the racial diversity of the borderland from which the composer drew his inspiration.  It is hoped that we can learn from the example of children who talk, laugh, play, sing, dance, and pray together.  …who are grateful for the time and experiences they share.

Published by David Heywood (A0.910428). Equinox by saxophonist John Coltrane is a minor blues with a haunting melody that has tremendous expression for such a simple tune. This arrangement for younger players features Flute Quartet (Three C Flutes and Alto) with rhythm section. It has been moved to C minor, and gives the melody a fresh coat of Afro-Cuban 6/8 feel with upper flutes and piano creating a rhythmic accompaniment for the melody in the lower flutes and bass guitar. The groove then switches to swing for solos over C minor blues for all players, and after solos there is a one chorus tribute to another famous minor blues head. All rhythm section parts are notated, including piano voicings, bass lines, and Afro-Cuban drum diagrams. An easier minor blues with a 6/8 twist!

It was originally published in 1893 towards the end of the composers life, and shows us all the traits of late romantic French chamber music. The first movement is lyrical and flowing, with rich chords and unexpected harmonic twists. The second movement is languid and dreamy, featuring a soaring bass flute solo in the middle of the movement. The third is almost like a minuet, featuring a florid melody in the first flute supported by the other instruments, and the final movement uses driving triplets and rhythmic unison passages to create urgency and excitement. Surely the pinnacle of chamber music, quartets give the players a chance to interact on the most intimate level with the other players and the audience. Knowing when to bring your line to the fore or when to support another player, how to duet with another musician, and how to work with your fellow players to allow the music to flower is possibly the ultimate expression of musicianship. This quartet allows flautists access to this experience, and also gives a new insight into a composer who's works have unjustifiably fallen out of favour.

Right from the getgo, an infectious bass ostinato gets things grooving, this combined with some surprising melodic twists makes this a really unique chart to feature the band on. Solos go to double time swing, and are open for anyone who knows the changes. After trading with the band, the chart ends on a fun shout chorus in 12/8 afro cuban time. Lead trumpet goes up to a written F6. Flutes on alto 1 and 2.

When we pause to listen to the suffering of another person--in conversation, on the news, in a book, through a documentary--our emotional response may be as important to cultivate as our actions. In this piece, sarabande is a form of lament through its slow tempo and melodic fall into the second beat of a three-beat meter. In contrast, satire twists the same melody into a playful march. Shedding tears and taking steps are two of several ways to react to others’ suffering. 5.5 minutes
