Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett. The violin and the vibraphone. Aside from the letter V, the two instruments have almost nothing in common. We consider: the violin is the most aristocratic instrument in the Western musical tradition, the prima donna of the instrumental world, an instrument that has had, lavished upon it, more extraordinary music than any other since its invention roughly 475 years ago. And then there’s the vibraphone, a percussion instrument with pitched metal bars and motor-driven resonators that produce a vibrato. Invented around 1925, it’s an instrument created for dance bands and popular music. Anything You Can Do . . . is a confrontation between these two musical opposites. A sense of contest characterizes the entire piece, as the vibraphone seeks to establish its bona fides side by side with the violin, which in turn attempts to keep the vibraphone in its place by beating it at its own game. The first movement is conceived as a race, in which each instrument acts like the other – the violin explosively and percussively, and the vibraphone with lengthy bowed passages – while seeking to shake off the other. The movement concludes with the violin paying a series of huge, chords and a long, sustained triple-stop that, much to its fury, the vibraphone manages to match with a sustained double-stop of its own. The movement ends in a draw. The second movement begins with the violin doing its best to match the vibrato patterns of the vibraphone’s variable motor. Ultimately, the violin breaks free and plays a broad, arioso-styled melody. The vibraphone tries to match it, but cannot; try as it might, its fixed range cannot reach the stratospheric heights of the violin. Advantage violin. The third movement is constructed in three sections. In the outer sections, rapidly rising and falling lines and counter rhythms pervade as each instrument seeks to gain an advantage over the other. In the middle section, alternating, hocket-like phrases give way to bent notes and glissandi in the vibraphone, which infuriates the violin (how dare this upstart percussion instrument do something ordinarily associated with me?). The movement concludes with the violin once again attempting to lord its greater range over the vibraphone by playing a long sustained F# - the same pitch that conquered the vibraphone at the end of the second movement – only to have the vibraphone top it by playing a harmonic a full seven notes above the F#. Game, set, match: vibraphone. Some respect, please, for the new kid on the block. Anything You Can Do . . . is dedicated, with a thousand-and-one thanks, to Victor Romasevich and Jack van Geem.

When Henry Fillmore originally put out the piece, he did in fact publish it with racist depictions of African-American trombonists. However, it is my opinion that the music itself is not racist. After all, it is an instrumental piece. It does not have racist lyrics like minstrel songs do, nor is it published anymore with racist depictions of people. And additionally, American music started with racism. It started with minstrel shows and blackface. That is how American musical culture was formed, and you can find songs with much worse backgrounds than this one that are still performed today. Even the Christmas tune Jingle Bells was originally a minstrel song, and that is still performed. Simply erasing this music won't do anything. That's my opinion. If you disagree, don't play it.

The seven modesThis collection of PDFs is something I am very proud of and I believe it has been my most well recieved PDF upload on the internet. Finding chord charts that simply list chords are a dime a dozen, and can be found anywhere. It is much rarer for a chord sheet to try to explain what order they go in and even rarer still to find it for guitar. It's difficult because it is an art, and of course there really is no wrong answers in composing (especially on Halloween I always joke). I personally haven't seen anything else quite like this on the internet.Many music theory books seem abstract and impractical whereas these chord charts show music theory applied to guitar. The aim is to memorize them so that you can understand them in all 12 keys. These chord progressions are of course a great composition aid. Tips:1. I find sheets like this to be excellent practice to play by ear. If the music is relaxing I play blue chords, if it is intense I play red chords. Once you get into the groove, and you know no one is changing key, it's as simple as that.2. When playing by ear, even if you get the exact chord wrong but you still get the correct color, it will still sound like you harmonizing the song correctly!!! See chords categorized by purpose rather than name will elegantly simplify how music actually works.3. The reason why we study the roman numerals is to be able to think about all of music in a single keyless key to allow for optimum clarity.4. One issue that needs to be fixed: what to do about the 11 other keys? One easy and quick fix is to use a guitar capo (or downtune) to get to all the other keys. I can't imagine giving out 56 pages of chord progressions to each of my students, it's way too much. Instead, I teach strategies on how these work in all 12 keys. 5. Order = Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue for stereotypical chord progressions that truely progress. These is such a thing called a chord succession where it is not the previous order. Again, try not to see music in terms of right and wrong. Everything expresses an emotion. For example, if there is a song devoid of red chords, it will result in more peaceful music. When a student meets successful attempt after successful attempt while gradually increasing difficulty, they are motivated to learn and are less likely to reinforce unwanted outcomes.Context- Practicing anything without understanding where it fits in the bigger picture is asking for failure. Accompanying parts to the etudes have been written to assist the learner through tempo consistency, performing other instrumental parts, and expanding beyond the provided excerpt.Ensemble- Performing with others improves intonation and listening, constructive teamwork, and can be a lot of fun. Four bass parts have been written for the etude in a layered accompaniment to keep the size of the ensemble flexible. Within the Standard Packet, part 1 is the etude itself, taking sections of the excerpts and practicing them in different ways to improve the original excerpt. Part 2 provides the most important accompanying music, allowing the etude to be practiced and performed with just two players. This is especially useful in private lessons, as the teacher can accompany the student as they wish. Within the Expanded Ensemble Packet, parts 3 and 4 expand on the accompaniment. While they are not needed for performance, they do fill spaces and provide more to the ensemble musically to create a trio or quartet. Other resources are provided within the excerpt etudes as well. A score is included in the Expanded Ensemble Packet with all four parts to allow easy comparison and study of each etude. The original excerpts are included in the Standard Packet as well, allowing the student to actively see where each rehearsal letter practice section derives from. An analysis of each rehearsal letter is offered defining the problem in question, as well as a practice solution and occasional extra tips. Finally, a difficulty rating sheet is provided to approximate the difficulty of each part.
