WITCHES’ FIREDANCE at BELTANE String quartet. Beltane continues to be observed throughout Ireland and Scotland. The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …†and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.â€It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. I may be incapable of loving the people of ISIS, ISIL, DAESH or whatever one calls them, but my God isn’t. He created them, he sent his Son to die for them … and he is even now ready to save them, as he is you and me. That’s grace.A small group of us sang this at a Good Friday united service in 2016. I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire is a pop song written by Bennie Benjamin, Eddie Durham, Sol Marcus and Eddie Seiler. It was written in 1938, but was first recorded three years later by Harlan Leonard and His Rockets. It was covered by several musicians and groups, most successfully by Horace Heidt on Columbia Records, whose version reached number one on the US pop chart; and by The Ink Spots on Decca in 1941, whose version reached number four on the same listing. The song, with its open line I don't want to set the world on fire / I just want to start a flame in your heart... became especially popular after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills for your listening (playing?) pleasure - we hope you like what we've done to make this arrangement unique!

Firefly Elegy uses a 12-note melodic theme, which through the course of the piece undergoes a series of transformations - mirroring the metamorphosis that takes place over a firefly's brief life span. The piece comprises four sections that reflect the four life stages of the firefly. During the motionless egg stage, some types of fireflies glow dimly; the opening section of the piece (following a short fanfare of flashing-light) is likewise static and calm, while at the same time features an internal motion hinting at subdued energy. The following groovy section is at times aggressive, not unlike the firefly during its larva stage, when it is hunting and digesting insects using special enzymes. The firefly hibernates through the pupa stage - reflected in the third section of the piece by seemingly everlasting sustained chords in the strings. Like a flash of light, each new phrase begins with an ascending scale, while the harp provides groups of repeated notes, recalling the synchronized flashes that are found in groups of tropical fireflies. Firefly Elegy ends with an elegy in which the now mature firefly looks back at its life. It has gone through such an extensive journey but only long enough to mate and lay eggs, sometimes without feeding during its adult stage. In the summertime, I often watch the firefly in his lonely flutter, flashing about and looking for a mate so he can complete the sole purpose of his short life before dying away. He must sometimes look back and wonder: was it all worth it?

Published by Jeremy Graham Hart (A0.1102258). 18/04/’21: A Reflection is written as a tentative expression of the tumultuous emotions experienced by the composer, upon watching so many landmarks of their home be threatened or destroyed by the fire which ravaged Table Mountain on the 18th and 19th of April 2021. The most impactful symbol of this tragedy is, for the composer, the heart-rending body of images showing the Jagger Reading Room ablaze. The score expresses the composer’s experiences in a collage, drawing from C. Debussy’s La Cathedral Engloutie and W. A. Mozart’s Requiem in evocation of the emotions surrounding the burning library, and enacts them in a three-part narrative. The opening is articulated as a collection of sporadic outbursts heard against a slower melody and a rising bell motif. This is an evocation of the shifting uncertainty of the early hours of the fire shortly after it had consumed the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant. This slowly becomes the evocation of horror and dismay that characterises the second section, as the fire takes hold of Mostert’s Mill, various parts of the University of Cape Town forcing students into a full evacuation of their residences, and eventually the Jagger Reading Room. The finality of the second section’s ending is followed by the muted resignation and mourning of the third and final section. The slowed melody from the first section returns, without the frenetic outbursts. All the listener is left with is the certainty of what has happened. The melody tries to rise to triumph, as the fire is held back from any further destruction, but ultimately falls back down and limps its way to an unsatisfactory and inconclusive closing statement.
