Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Baroque Period, Christian, Classroom, European, Easter. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by KrahenfuBlieder
Item Number: S0.1045365
This instrumental quartet version was created with ensemble practice in mind for beginning music school students who want more contact with baroque music, ideal also for liturgical performances in churches, since it is a sacred work. This version lasts 3:19 minutes with the original melody adapted with the harmony divided between the voices of the performers.
Jesu joy of man's desiring or Wohl mir, daß ich Jesum habe (I am happy to have Jesus) is a chorale from the cantata 147 "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" or "Heart and mouth and deed and life" from the B. W. V 147 catalog composed by Johann Sebastian Bach around 1723, where the same music in different stanzas of a chorale closes both parts of the cantata.

The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. Woodwind Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1401651 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 70 pages. Jmsgu3 #984834. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1401651). Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 is significant for its composition and structure. It features nine solo strings divided into three groups of violins, violas, and cellos, showcasing a colorful instrumentation and demanding performance requirements. The concerto opens majestically with distinct groupings of soloists by instrument, maintaining these divisions throughout the movement with moments of independence for each soloist. The closing movement, a vigorous allegro, follows a similar pattern with the nine players divided by instrument. Additionally, the concerto includes a two-note adagio cadence where musicians were intended to improvise a link between the outer movements. This concerto is a prime example of the Baroque concerto style. It demonstrates Bach's mastery in creating intricate and harmonious compositions that challenge performers while showcasing the beauty of different instruments working together harmoniously. The historical context of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos is rooted in the Baroque era and Bach's circumstances. Composed around 1711-1720 and dedicated in 1721 to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg, these concertos were a collection of six concerti grossi that showcased a balance between various groups of soloists and a small orchestra. Bach's decision to compile these concertos was influenced by his need for employment and his encounter with Christian Ludwig, who commissioned several works after being impressed by his performance in Berlin around 1719. Despite Bach's hopes for a position at the Brandenburg court, the Margrave did not pay for the work, possibly because the pieces were revisions of earlier compositions rather than new creations specifically for him. Moreover, the Brandenburg Concertos exemplify the concerto grosso genre popular during the Baroque era, featuring a more significant number of soloists than usual and expansive music that showcases a variety of instruments in different combinations. Bach's innovative use of instruments like trumpets, recorders, French horns, oboes, flutes, violino piccolo, violas da gamba, and harpsichord in these concertos highlights his creativity and mastery in composing intricate and diverse musical pieces. The historical significance lies in Bach's ability to blend different musical styles and forms while creating a set of concertos that music lovers cherish today.

AllegrettoCarl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a German composer and the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach. He is considered to be one of the most important figures in the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods of music history. CPE Bach was known for his experimentation with form and harmony, as well as his use of Empfindsamkeit, a style of expression that conveys intense emotion.CPE Bach's works have been influential in the development of classical chamber music and duet writing. He wrote a large number of chamber works, including symphonies, concertos, sonatas, and string quartets. His duets for flute and keyboard, as well as his string duets, are especially well-known. He also wrote several works for two harpsichords, which were often performed by himself and his father. CPE Bach's chamber works often contain surprising harmonic changes and unexpected musical twists, which helped to shape the Classical style. His works also helped to bridge the gap between the Baroque and Classical periods, as his compositions often featured elements of both styles.CPE Bach's influence is still felt today, as many of his works are still regularly performed. His compositions are an important part of the classical repertoire, and his influence on classical chamber music and duet writing continues to be felt.

Instrumental Duet Bass Clarinet,Flute,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - SKU: A0.981385 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Bruno Cavalcante. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,World. Score and parts. 6 pages. Bruno Cavalcante #5749371. Published by Bruno Cavalcante (A0.981385). In Baroque music, the key of B minor had a melancholy quality. Bach reserved it for a few of his most impressive works, such as the Kyrie in the Mass in B minor. Bach composed his ‘French’ suites as a young man of thirty, when he was working at the court of Köthen. However, the suites have nothing to do with the court. Bach wrote them for teaching purposes in his own private circle. The first five appear in their original form in the little music book he compiled in 1722 for his second wife Anna Magdalena, possibly as a wedding present. But Bach continued to rework the pieces. The later versions, with the addition of a sixth suite, have survived thanks to the many copies made by his pupils. They are rewarding practice pieces that despite a certain compositional complexity (it is Bach, after all), do not make extreme demands on the player.

Woodwind Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.550555 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Christmas,Easter,Standards. 67 pages. Jmsgu3 #4735777. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550555). The 15 Two-Part Inventions BWV 772-786, arranged for Alto & Baritone Sax. The historical context of Bach's 15 Two-Part Inventions is rooted in their didactic purpose and significance in developing keyboard technique and musical expression. Composed around 1720, these pieces were part of Bach's Klavierbüchlein, a collection of 62 short works for keyboard compiled for his nine-year-old son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The Inventions were designed as exercises to teach two-part playing, familiarize students with musical ideas, and provide a taste of composition. They were structured with care, with the first three based on scales, the following three on broken chords, and a combination of both in the final piece, almost resembling a fugue in form. Bach's Inventions are experiments on musical ideas and a new way of combining lines, reflecting his didactic aim and providing a clear path for students to learn to play cleanly in two parts and acquire a strong foretaste of composition. The inventions' musical elements, composition, and piano technique can be effectively learned and expressed through different instruments. The adaptability of Bach's Two-Part Inventions to various instruments allows for a broader exploration of musical ideas and will enable instrumentalists to develop their technical and expressive abilities.
