The complete set arranged wind dectet and bass Romanian Folk Dances Sz. 56, BB 68 is a suite of six short piano pieces composed by Béla Bartók in 1915. He later orchestrated it for small ensemble in 1917 as Sz. 68, BB 76. It is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd's flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary but was later changed by Bartók when Transylvania became part of Romania in 1920. It is nowadays available in the 1971 edition which is written with key signatures although Bartók rarely ever used key signatures. This set of dances consists of six movements and, according to the composer, it should take four minutes and three seconds to perform, but most professional pianists take up to five minutes. The list of the movements is as follows (with the original Hungarian title listed first, the most commonly known Romanian title second, and the English translation in parentheses): Bot tánc / Jocul cu bâtă (Stick Dance)The melody of the first movement, according to Bartók, came from the Mezőszabad (present-day Voiniceni) village that was part of Mezőcsávás (present-day Ceuașu de Câmpie) commune which was located in the Maros-Tordaadministrative county within Transylvania, and he first heard it when two gypsy violinists were playing it. Brâul (Sash Dance)The second movement is a typical dance from Romania called Brâul, for which traditionally a sash or a waistband was used. This melody came from Egres (present-day Igriș), in the Banat region. Topogó / Pe loc (In One Spot)The third dance comes also from Egres (Igriș), but its theme is much darker and its melody recreates Middle Eastern instruments, such as the flute.[4] Bucsumà tánc / Buciumeana (Dance from Bucsum)The fourth dance came from Bucsony, Alsó-Fehér County (today Bucium, Alba county in Romania) Román polka / Poarga Românească (Romanian Polka)The fifth dance is an old Romanian dance similar to the Polka and comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuş, in Bihor county), near the border between Hungary and Romania. Aprózó / Mărunțel (Fast Dance)The sixth and last dance is formed by two different melodies: the first one comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuș) and the second one comes from the then named Nyagra (present-day Neagra) village within the Palotailva (present-day Lunca Bradului) commune. Both on the orchestral version and on the original piano version, the final two dances are performed attacca-without a break between movements.

So when you make a mistake, choose to make it right today so that this day, this day of good choosing will be what will last forever. Never let yourself do something that you know inside is wrong. If your friends are trying to talk you into doing something you know is wrong, don't just sit there and listen to them. Get up and leave the room, or the party, or the situation. Be true. Be the one. Be the son or daughter of God. Do what He would do.

Helping Hands is a march written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). It is dedicated to all the volunteers that make the Whit Friday March Contests possible, which is said to be the greatest free show on Earth. The piece is loosely programmatic in nature.The introduction is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands’ anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. There is the usual hustle and bustle before the second section sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day.The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. There is a small bridge that is reminiscent of previously used motifs and melodies before the hymn returns. German.CONTENT How does a town intended for children evolve, who lives in it, what forms of transport can be used to get around and how it is also possible that unpleasant moments occur in an urban community? These are all questions which Wir bauen eine Stadt answers in a playful and child-oriented mode. COMMENTARY Since 1926, Hindemith had been pursuing the objective of attracting children and amateur musicians to contemporary music through the composition of especially suitable musical works. In 1927, his musical-educational ambitions led among other projects to the involvement of the youth music movement in his plans for the Baden- Baden chamber music festival in which he was deeply involved in his capacity as member of the programme committee. Neue Musik Berlin 1930, a supplementary event following the Baden-Baden music festival, was to be devoted not only to radio plays, amateur choirs and electric music, but also to the field of ‘plays and songs for children’. The play for children Wir bauen eine Stadt was created in collaboration with the Berlin author Robert Seitz who provided the text and was premièred on 21 June 1930 by children aged between eight and twelve years old providing the final work in the concert Neue Musik Berlin 1930. The work swiftly achieved widespread dissemination and was available in a number of different languages within two years of its completion. Hindemith explained his pedagogical concept behind Wir bauen eine Stadt in a preface to the score as follows: ‘A play for children: this means that this work was more intended as a lesson and exercise for children themselves rather than for the entertainment of adult audiences. The form of the work can be altered according to the appropriate needs of the group of children involved: songs can be omitted and other musical pieces, dances or scenes inserted. An infinite number of children can participate in this work; apart from the minimum of three players for the “orchestraâ€, no specific instrumentation is specified. If numerous musicians are available (perhaps also those with instruments which are played in other registers than the pitches indicated in this work), these can be employed doubling at the octave of the two outer parts to achieve a more interesting texture. The music can additionally be livened up by tambourines, drums and other easily playable percussion. […]’ Alongside three instrumental movements, Hindemith’s play for children primarily consists of choral songs in verse form for one- and two-voice choir with a few simple individual solo parts. This classic children’s theatre composition has up to the present day retained its prominent place within the (school) theatre repertoire. Six pieces from this work were issued in a piano version for children in 1931 under the title: Wir bauen eine Stadt. Klavierstücke für Kinder. (S. Sch.-G.) If we take a moment to observe the natural occurrences that take place around us every day – sunrises and sunsets, tides coming in and going out, the transformation of winter to spring – we can begin to see that change is a necessary part of growing and developing into who we. However, these moments in your life are not always easy ones. Anew explores the journey of someone experiencing a moment of great change in their life. What sort of emotions are they feeling? What thoughts are going through their head? As someone who has gone through a big shift in my career path, I wanted to compose a piece to help me process my emotions and organize the thoughts in my head on why I felt this change needed to happen. Having the motto “words fail music speaks,” I was inspired as a composer by way of ostinato rhythms, melodic extension, and juxtaposed musical styles to help unpack what words simply could not quantify.
