Georg Philipp Telemann – Polish Dances from the Rostock Manuscript TWV 45 (Danse d`Polones / Danse Polonie)Telemann was seduced by Polish music, especially by his dances and popular musicI became acquainted there and also in Krakau with Polish and Moravian music in its true, barbaric beauty […] […] it is impossible to imagine the fantastic musical ideas they presented between dances when the dancers rested and the musicians improvised music together [‘jammed’] to fill out the time. Anyone who paid very close attention could pick up in 8 days sufficient musical ideas to last a lifetime.(Telemann’s autobiography, published in Mattheson’s Ehren-Pforte, Hamburg, 1740)It is easy to understand, through Telemann’s own words, the great influence that Polish music and Polish dances had on Telemann. It was in 1705 when Telemann become Kapellmeister for the court of Count Erdmann II of Promnitz at Sorau (now Żary, in Poland), His career there was cut short in early 1706 by the hostilities of the Great Northern War but his contact with Polish music marked him for life.These Polish dances found in Rostock are a reflection of the music that Telemann heard and transcribed. A reflection of that barbaric beauty.The manuscript was discovered in 1986 at the University of Rostock. It consists of two volumes. One of the volumes contains the violin part and the other the bass part.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767472). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for Double Reed quintet 2 oboes, CA, Bassoon, ContrabassoonThe style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The contra leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the Bassoon. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the Oboe 1 with an obbligato on oboe 2 before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the Contrabassoon and Bassoon. The middle section has a mournful Contra melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.

The Renaissance comes between the Middle Ages and the Baroque times.Putting music into time sections does not mean that there were quick changes of type. Music changed slowly, and early Renaissance music was similar to Medieval music. Slowly music-writers started to try new ideas. A lot of medieval church music had become very hard with lots of rules about rhythms and clashes of notes to make dissonances. A lot of Renaissance composers wrote music which was smoother and more gentle. The music was still polyphonic with each voice having a share of melody. Music was starting to become less modal and more tonal. The Suite for guitar aims to blend tradition and modernity through the use of a language with a neobaroque imprint.The canonical utilization of the fixed dances of the Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue preceded by an introductory Prelude) serves as a clear reference to the corresponding Baroque model characterized by alternation between slow and fast movements. The style, on the other hand, appears to be moderately dissonant, yet still focused on a well-defined tonal framework. A personal use of both dissonances and modulations is intended to enhance the auditory experience while maintaining a strong connection to a specific tonal center (E), which serves as a stable reference point in the organization of the musical material.La Suite pour guitare vise à mêler tradition et modernité à travers l’utilisation d’un langage à l’empreinte néobaroque.L’utilisation canonique des « danses fixes » de la Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande et Gigue précédées d’un Prélude introductif) sert de référence claire au modèle baroque correspondant caractérisé par une alternance entre mouvements lents et rapides.Le style, en revanche, semble modérément dissonant, tout en restant centré sur une structure tonale bien définie. In this case, the usual dances of the European Baroque (such as Allemande or Courante) were generally avoided, and a dance and musical genre of Chile, the Cueca, could be integrated. The title of the last piece (Gigue post-antique) is a wink: an inverted allusion to the concept of Postmodernity - i.e. to that mindset which opposes itself critically to the scale of values of Modernity, particularly against compulsion towards innovation, and which for that refers to past styles (partially in an ironic way).The degree of difficulty of this work has been intentionally kept low.The Petite Suite Antique was originally composed for recorder; however, it can be played with any other melodic instrument, such as, for example, flute, oboe or violin. He is best known for his symphonic works, but also wrote many piano pieces based on dances. I have taken his piano Gavotte and freely arranged it for Instrumental Quartet. Â This brisk piece is lively with a busy texture. I have crafted 4 independent lines that are each of equal importance and the focus quickly shifts from one part to the other. The lines rhythmically weave together, answering each other. The real interest in the piece is the constantly changing and contrasting dynamics and articulation. Often every beat of the bar has a different articulation, and the individual parts rarely have the same articulation at the same time. (i.e., One part might be slurred while another part is playing staccato and yet another is accented.) This complexity of texture creates energy and excitement. A great piece to spice up any concert with a fun smile. Â This composition is a fusion of multiple eras; originally written during the Romantic period, but with many Classical elements and a Baroque form and style, to which I add some Contemporary touches. Â Notes and rhythms are Intermediate, but adding all of the markings at this pace makes it Advanced Intermediate.6 page score, 2 page parts2:10 minutes

Instrumentation: 3333-4331-timp-2perc-cel-hp-strings Program Notes: When Charles Ansbacher, music director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, commissioned me to write Pluto as a grand finale for The Planets by Gustav Holst, I immediately thought of Pluto, the Disney character; but common sense took over when I sat down to work. So instead of Disney’s faithful dog, I gravitated to the Pluto of Roman mythology. After a long battle with the Titans, the three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Pluto, divided the world among themselves. Zeus had the sky; Poseidon, the sea; and Pluto, the Underworld. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead, whether good or bad, enter the Underworld. Cerberus, a vicious three-headed beast, stands guard at the entrance - preventing the living from entering the world of the dead. The movement begins with a fanfare: Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld. Then a grand waltz materializes in the bass: Pluto dances!! As the waltz fades away, a lyrical tune emerges: Persephone, the wife of Pluto, appears. The work ends with a reprise of the opening fanfare, slightly altered.
