Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1488743). The two Serenades, Op. 11 and 16, represent early efforts by Johannes Brahms to write orchestral music. They both date from after the 1856 death of Robert Schumann when Brahms was residing in Detmold and had access to an orchestra.Brahms had a goal of reaching Ludwig van Beethoven's level in writing symphonies, and worked long and hard on his first symphony, completing it only in 1876 when he was 43 years old. As preliminary steps in composing for orchestra, he chose early on to write some lighter orchestral pieces, these Serenades.The second serenade was first sent to Clara Schumann, who was delighted by it. It was written in 1859 and dedicated to her.The first public performance, reportedly for full orchestra (version lost?), was in Hamburg on 10 February 1860.Brahms himself reworked the piece for piano 4 hands in 1875.The same year he revisited the orchestral version, this time for a small chamber orchestra.The new scoring was for :piccolo,2 flutes,2 oboes,2 clarinets (in A for movements I, IV, V; in C for movement II; and in B flat for movement III),2 bassoons, 2 horns, violas, cellos, and double basses.(omitting violins, brass, and percussion)The five movements take approximately thirty minutes to perform.Allegro moderato (A major)Scherzo. She holds a B.Mus in Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she studied piano under Michele Cooker and Louis Nagel; she also studied composition with Bright Sheng and basso continuo/harpsichord accompaniment with Edward Parmentier. In 2006 and 2007, Nicole appeared as a concerto soloist with the Ambassador Chamber Players, featuring works of J. S. Bach and Mozart alongside two performances of her own Piano Trio in C minor. Following her graduation from Michigan, Nicole completed an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she has recently become a PhD candidate in the same field; her dissertation research will explore relationships between selected early partimenti (instructional sketches used by Italian composition teachers) and George Frideric Handel’s compositional techniques. Currently, Nicole is a sought-after private instructor of piano, music theory, and composition on the IU campus, where she is also an active mostly-vocal accompanist. Nicole continues to enjoy musical partnerships with students of nearly every current IU voice department faculty member (and she unashamedly absorbs and borrows teaching/coaching/performing tips from all these professors). In addition, she has taken French and German diction courses with Prof. Gary Arvin. Preface and notes to the edition (English and Spanish) Score Parts (violin, violoncello, and basso) The sonata can be found in autograph version at the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino (Foá 29, pp.83r-86v).  It is the only known copy of this work, and was composed around 1720. It is copied in full score format.In the known catalog of Vivaldi’s works we find only another piece written for the same instrumentation (violin, violoncello, and basso): the trio sonata RV 820. The differences between the two sonatas are notable: the rv 820 sonata was written in Vivaldi’s younger years (ca. 1705) while the rv 83 sonata shows us a Vivaldi who has already forged his own fully recognizable style.Vivaldi used abbreviations and sometimes omitted certain information; a common practice found in many of his autographs. This edition clarifies all these annotations and, at the same time, gives the performer all the information contained in the manuscript.

RayThompsonMusic #116436. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.504640). The Serenade No. 12 for winds in C minor, K. 388/384a, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1782 or 1783. The work is sometimes called Nachtmusik. In 1787, Mozart transcribed the work for string quintet. The serenade is scored for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons. I have added 2 flutes, so it isnow scored for winddectet (double wind quintet) There are four movements: Allegro, C minor, sonata form Andante, E-flat major, sonata form Menuet & Trio, C minor, Trio in C major, ternary form Allegro, C minor, ends in C major, variation form with the fifth variation (in E-flat major) augmented. The minuet is a canon. The oboes carry the melody with the bassoons answering one bar later. The trio is also canonic with the response to the melody played upside down. The finale is a set of variations containing a central episode in E-flat major and a coda that turns to C major near the end.
