Fare Thee Well My Own True Love  Arranged for Intermediate/Advanced Guitar by Dan Jones  I chanced upon this beautiful melody under the title of ‘Irish Love Song’ in 2022. I quickly arranged it for solo guitar to add to my own repertoire. I then researched the correct title of the melody and found that the closest match was ‘Fare Thee Well My Own True Love’. The tune is in two distinct sections and the ‘B’ section has several variants. This one is lesser known, but I find it very melodic and poignant. The score is given in two versions, one with just notes, the second with notes and TAB.  Less-experienced players could consider playing just the first page which avoids the later higher positions, but still gives the piece in its entirety. Various versions of the tune have been recorded by a range of artists. The melody is also similar to that of the folk song The Leaving of Liverpool, also covered by artists as diverse as The Dubliners to The Pogues. A YouTube video of the arranger performing the song will be uploaded before the end of April 2023.

This will fit with the song but feel free to come up with your own! This is to be an aid for learners and a resource for teachers. -Structure- The sheet music follows the structure of the song as heard in the recording. If the repeats are not obvious each section (Verse/PreChorus/Chorus) is marked by boxed texts for ease of navigation. I have also provided a tab for the riff which persists throughout the piece in the intro section. -Length- One of my main aims in arranging popular titles is to make the effort to try and minimise the amount of pages required. As a Musician I hate having pages and pages of music that could have been condensed using repeats and other structure markings. This arrangement fully utilises these and this is part of the reason why the decision was made note to notate the final chorus as sung in the recording. As this is a lead sheet it hold all the info to play this song in two pages. -Alternatives- If you need more info in your music I have two other arrangements of this. Both are Voice, Piano, and Guitar Arrangements, the first with the melody above a simple piano accompaniment with the Guitar chords the second is a piano reduction of this arrangement with alterations so that it is playable on the piano. We are always looking for places to go together, as well as excuses to include each other in our own individual travels. One of my personal favorite travel opportunities is the International Double Reed Society conference. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends, make new friends and contacts, and make beautiful music. A number of years ago, I started the All Star Double Reed Band that has now premiered over a dozen new pieces for large double reed ensemble, and has recorded an album of those works. As a combined labor of love, I wrote Impressions of Yellowstone for my wife, a concert pianist, to perform with this group.The first movement, “Little Grand Canyon opens with a chorale in the piano illustrating the simple majesty of the great and wondrous park that my wife and I visit annually with her parents. From there, the music exemplifies my impression of this wondrous landscape; beautiful, powerful. A deep valley with a waterfall on one end, it is one of the more beautiful sites to see in Yellowstone.The second movement, Grand Prismatic, is a musical impression of the different perspectives of this very famous Yellowstone landmark. From the overlook, you see a stunning pond with steam emanating from it and surrounded by color. However, if you are to go down and stand next to the hotspot, your perspective changes greatly. Sulfur smells, danger from the soft crust (with boiling sulfuric liquid just below the surface), and a hot, steamy fog of mist permeate the area.In the finale, Old Faithful, tone painting is brought out in full force as the opening piano solo material brings about the image of the geyser bubbling and building below the surface. Then, at the point of explosion, you hear the water falling and the delight of all of the dozens of onlookers who visit this most famous site at Yellowstone every day.The original version, for double reeds, is dedicated the All Star Double Reed Band and my wife, Tammy Miller, who recorded it on the Co-Op Press label.The version for piano and string orchestra is dedicated to Tammy and the National Composers Orchestra who recorded it on the Baldwin Records label.

My original song, Poe's Christmas Eve Carousel Ride, is a microtonal melody for Celesta and/or Flute/Voice, based on Edgar Allan Poe's Evening Star.I imagined Edgar Allan Poe sitting on one of the carousel horses as it was going around and around. While this was happening, he was looking up at the night sky and thought about how much he liked the evening star better than the moon's light. (The celesta is known for its recognized sound in Tchaikovsky's, The Nutcracker Suite, The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.). I figured out how to put it in a quartal tone key in Finale, thanks to Google. I used quartal tones in the left hand, so it's a blend of a tonal melodic line in an atonal landscape. Edgar Allan Poe had a horrific life. His father abandoned his family when he was young. His mother died when he was a child. After he was adopted, although not legally, he had a falling out with his foster father, who alienated him and didn't let him know that his foster mother was dying. But, he did inform him after she died. Edgar married his cousin, Virginia Clem, who was 13 and he was 26. She died 11 years into their marriage due to tuberculosis. Thus, some writers say that all of his writings have a beautiful woman who died in his stories. He lost all of the women who loved him in his life. When you see his portrait, he has sad eyes, as someone who has suffered much. But, his writing has lived well beyond his lifetime of misery and heartache. My song symbolizes, not only Poe's poem, but his life, as very difficult, yet beautiful. With me poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion. Edgar Allan Poe. WITCHES’ FIREDANCE at BELTANE String quartet. Beltane continues to be observed throughout Ireland and Scotland. The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

Last month I went to visit a friend of mine in Canton, GA, and it inspired me to write this song. It's kind of like one of my earlier compositions Kentucky Hills. Georgia is definitely one of my favorite states, and I absolutely *love* to travel. No matter how long the drive, I will go anywhere if I am determined enough. This was a seven-to-eight hour drive and was definitely worth it. Earlier this year I also drove up to University of Northern Florida in Jacksonville, FL, which is two and a half hours north of me. From there I took a friend up to Jekyll Island, which was beautiful. Speaking of UNF, that is where I am going for my fall term. I'm going to major in music education and also finish my AA up there.
