This piece for three cellos is built on an insistent and urgent rhythmic ostinato, around which the other two parts bounce mostly short melodic ideas off each other. The technical difficulty is not too high, especially in parts 2 and 3, and would be a good piece for introducing odd meter to intermediate students, as the piece is in 5/4 throughout with fairly consistent rhythmic emphasis. In form it's effectively a blues, with sections being AABA with the B section moving to the subdominant.The mp3 is an multitrack recording and the link includes video of the same performance - all parts played by me.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Instrumentation:FluteClarinet in BbHorn in FViolinViolaCelloDoiuble bassSeptet, opus 77 … “Variations on a Shaker Tune†was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Western Berkshires of Massachusetts.  When he approached me about writing a “theme and variations†work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from near Hancock Shaker Village.  As it turns out Deborah Leah Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark’s assistant at the TerezÃn Music Foundation, has been researching into and transcribing from a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled for the Hancock Shaker Village.  (Deborah’s project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.)   So I asked her to put on a DAT tape (those were the days before CDs or digital distribution… ) a number of these hymns for me.  I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape, “Grateful Remembrance.† It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost “bluesy†feeling to it.  In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella at the beginning.   Then, the seven variations will follow.I. Grateful Remembrance … An instrumental version of the hymn.II. Grateful Chanting … Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic “chant†setting.III. Grateful Funk … The “bluesiness†of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff.IV. Tango Remembered … A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango.V. The song Badge is a famous track that emerged from a collaboration between George Harrison of The Beatles and Eric Clapton, one of the most renowned guitarists in rock. This song is part of the album *Goodbye* (1969) by the band Cream, which Clapton was a member of, along with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. The story behind Badge is interesting and reflects the close friendship between Harrison and Clapton at the time.### Collaboration and CreationGeorge Harrison and Eric Clapton were great friends, and this friendship resulted in several musical collaborations over the years. Badge was written during a session where both were together. As performed by Tredegar Town Band at Brass In Concert 2014 in their 3rd place winning program, With A Little Help From My Friends is a transcription/arrangement of the ProBrass version. This arrangement helped Dewi Griffiths secure the Best Principal Cornet prize and requires a soloist that can either improvise, or capable of playing Thomas Gansch style blues licks as in the original solo, which is also included with the parts. This arrangement begins with a piccolo trumpet duo (also playable on Soprano and Bb Cornet) in a baroque style, then building to a massive 6/8 power ballad entrance, followed by a bluesy solo trumpet feature. More building to a big section requiring the soloist to unleash their inner rock god follows, then back down to a sedate blues where a solo trombonist joins in the antics. The ending is a tricky metric modulation, where the 6/8 turns into a rock 4/4 and brings in the big guns (the bass section) with some hard hitting lines. Feel free to allow your drummer to ad lib. as much of this piece as you dare! Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download.
