About 1785, Haydn received a commission to write a series of concertos for Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and the Twin Sicilies. It was a very curious commission; for these concertos were to be written for a pair of strange instruments, the so-called Lira organizzata. The lira was a favourite instrument of the lazzaroni, the common people of Neaples: the Bourbon King, though often a rough and uncouth monarch, had a deep affection for his people. and for all their peculiar customs, and it is characteristic that his favourite musical instrument should have been that so beloved by his people. In a letter from the King of Neaples there are two points which explain much of the peculiar character of Haydn’s concertos for the King: the first is the restricted tonal range of all the works, C, F and G major are the only principal keys allowed. The second is the range of the lira itself which is about that of an oboe. Bearing these limitations in mind, Haydn did not attempt to write complicated double concertos, but rather ensemble music for two lire, two violins, two violas, cello and two horns, in other words, 9 solo instruments. (This edition: Flute, oboe, two clarinets, two basset horns, bassoon, contrabass and two horns). Moreover, he neatly combined the concerto form with that of the divertimento: there is often no strict division into solo and tutti, but constant intermingling of both. Wonderful music by Haydn, originally written for a mixed ensemble of 2 liras, 2 Horns and strings, but this is a transcription for a classical wind ensemble, a great companion for a concert together with i.e. Mozart’s Gran Partita, since it has almost the same instrumentation.

FOREST TALES is a collection of 10 pieces that aim to acquaint classical guitar students with the unequal time signatures most commonly used in Bulgarian folk music  (starting with 5/8, all the way  to 15/8). Each of the pieces is aimed at mastering a certain technical element: the ‘Little Spider’ stretches the threads of its cobweb through a descending legato to an open string, ‘Dr. Woodpecker’ takes care of the bark of the trees through various percussion techniques, the ‘Fireflies’ glitter with the sound of natural harmonics, and so on.All musicians all over the world are familiar with dance forms like alemande and sarabande, menuette and waltz, tango and rumba, but how many of them are familiar with the different Bulgarian types of 'horo' (ring-dances)? Christchurch Alive! - Brass Band Major WorkPlaying level : Suitable for bands of all levelsParts for British Brass Band, and transposed options for Bass clef Trombone/Euphonium/Baritones/Tubas and Horns in F.Christchurch Alive! was written for the Nor'west Brass Band in 2017 by Dale Vail as the own choice work for their first New Zealand National Brass Band Contest in 2018.Christchurch Alive! is a testimony to the spirit of the Christchurch Community, and their resilience to the life changing earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The piece is built around the harmonic circle of fifths. The circle of fifths is famous for being a common harmonic pattern in both baroque and classical music, and jazz and modern music. Most influentially used by Arcangelo Corelli, the pattern appears commonly in the Johann Sebastian Bach's music, and the works of Antonio Lucio Vivaldi.In the modern age, it is most famously heard in Joseph Kosma's Autumn Leaves. Dale's piece takes the two sides of this famous progression, and links them into one seamless piece of music, symbolising the union of two eras making something new, much like pre-earthquake culture, and new post-earthquake culture, joining together to create a new community.The work opens with a traditional style melody, utilising a modern minor 7th tonality. Tubular bells sound 5 times, a clock tower striking 5am marking the first hour after the first earthquake. The band explodes into a New Orleans style street band theme, showing the nightlife and central city vibrancy that still exists amongst the repairs. This swaps to a Vivaldi inspired melody, using the same circle of 5ths progression, a blend of two different times, old and new buildings forming one city. A solo voice from offstage begins a cadenza, echos of a busker in the old arts centre markets, which brings one intoA nostalgic melody from the flugel. A reflection on what used to be. The circle of fifths becomes a I - V progression, stuck on a continuous loop, illustrating a longing to remember, and to restore what was. The circle begins to move forward again with a solo trombone taking the stage, a reflection on the late night jam sessions from the Christchurch Jazz School on Poplar lane. A Sibelius inspired melody reminds that whilst the past is remembered, it cannot be revisited. The flugel melody is re-harmonized, remembering what made the old Christchurch great, and taking that with us to the new Christchurch. All the themes are revisited and brought together in a vibrant ending, a hybrid of different communities, restored and new landmarks, and a resolve to make the future their own.The city is thriving and more alive than ever.

It seemed to me that I was hearing the very voice of God.--- 'Amadeus' (1984)This is one of the most gorgeous woodwind ensemble composition written during in the Classical period, by W.A. Mozart. It is now a common knowledge that Mozart was not fond of flute as an instrument, therefore we see the instrumention in the original version was without flute. In this arrangement, the melodies and accompaniment are separated with all the main melodies played by soloists which corresponds to the original principal parts. Horn is also arranged into Alto Saxophones which is more common in a woodwind ensemble.

A polystylistic, minimalist composition in six movements, with an overall neoclassical feel. At least one meter change within each movement. Some of the meters are unusual, such as 5/4 or 7/8. The styles within each movement are dissonant/diatonic, expressionistic, and common practice harmony. Each movement ends on a passage of diatonic harmony. Common practice harmony is a feature of each movement. It's almost 15 minutes in length. Fairly easy to play for college horn students; the violin could be played probably by high schoolers. Intermediate to advanced intermediate.

The guitar version is written in three keys: E, G and A (Dorian). The performer may choose one or another score at their convenience. The guitar version can also use effects of all kinds, or amplifiers that are not always used in classical music. At the end of 2019 an album will be released on Spotify and other online music platforms with both versions of the piece (solo piano and acoustic guitar with electronic sounds). As an example of the amplitude that the composer expects from the performers: in this record production, the guitar signal is split in two parts, panned to the right and left, and different types of effects are applied to each channel (chorus, delay, reverb of different kinds and with different parameters). The original guitar signal is also in the center. Of course, there are also the electronic sounds themselves. It is part of a series of rhetorical questions that tend to convince Job of his ignorance. Has the Rain a Father? was composed in Bremen (Germany) on March 17, 2019 (plus details to the piano part on March 27). Its duration is about 4:30. I asked some people about the wording of the title. Among the meaningful answers: Which wording is better, Has the rain a Father? or Does the Rain have a father? (Bible, Job, 38:28). It will be used as the title of a music piece for piano. Has the Rain a Father? is slightly unusual, and thus is attention-grabbing, something you want in a title. It sounds more biblical, calling attention to the allusion. In ordinary speech the Does the . . . version is more common, but for a title you don’t necessarily want common. (Johnny Wilson, former Writer and Magazine Editor (1973-1999))

This work aims to depict a common theme of certain pieces by some classical composers: that of deathly or devilish dances, and the like. This piece is an extended single movement structure for a mixed chamber ensemble that is an octet of oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, piano, viola, cello, and double bass. The form is divided into a series of contrasting dances (labelled as Dance, Folk Lament, Jig, Meditation, and Funeral March), all of which are interspersed with differing statements of an ostinato-based 'chorale' idea on the piano. The whole work is framed by an 'intrada', which builds the germinal motif on which the whole piece is based, characterised by semitones and fourths. Indeed, the 'devil's interval' of the augmented fourth has a particular function and significance. The piece actually ends with an 'epilogue', which features mysterious and ghostly reminiscences of the previous main sections. The title of this work also refers to the episode 'Dance of the Dead' from the 1960s cult TV series 'The Prisoner'. In part, the piece attempts to capture the mystery and atmosphere of the series, and of that specific episode. Indeed, the music's series of related but contrasting sections act almost as an original sequence of dramatic TV incidental music cues. The work is accessible to both performers and audience alike. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF183). 9 x 12 in inches.The clarinet is my instrument, and I think the two greatest works in its repertory (and two of the greatest of all chamber works) are the quintets for clarinet and strings by Mozart and Brahms. In writing for this combination of instruments, I borrowed ideas shamelessly from both.I would describe the style as folk-inspired classical chamber music. The melodies are song-like or dance-like; the harmonies are simple, modal, and consonant. The time signatures of the three movements are 7/8, 5/4, 7/8 - unusual in classical music but common in the folk music of some eastern European countries. The texture is homophonic in some places and contrapuntal in others, always with at least one melody, often with more than one. The clarinet is not treated as a solo instrument but is integrated into the ensemble.The first movement is in sonata form. As in the Mozart and Brahms quintets, it begins in the strings, with the clarinet entering a few bars later on a rising arpeggio. The first theme is song-like; the second theme is dance like. The movement ends quietly on a phrase from the second theme. The form of the second movement begins with a song for the cello, repeated in the clarinet. The next section features a dance-like melody in the second violin, repeated in the clarinet with a descant in the first violin. Then a brief section in the minor, featuring the viola, leads to a repetition of the song that opened the movement, this time in the viola, repeated in the violins and the clarinet.The third movement is a set of variations on a brisk, dance-like theme. After several variations, including two in the minor mode, the tempo slows to adagio for the next-to-last variation (as in the last movement of the Mozart quintet). That variation features a duet for the first violin and the clarinet (as in the slow movement ofthe Brahms quintet). The final variation returns to the brisk tempo and brings back the melodic figure that ends the first movement. A brief coda on this melodic figure concludes the piece.

Artaria Editions AE432Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including four sonatas for violin and fortepiano, and this work in D minor, was written in 1777 expressly for violin and clavicembalo, representing a different sort of piece than the more common duo sonata. It is not known for whom the work was written, but the extensive virtuosity makes it likely that it was intended either for Kraus himself or his brother Franz (1760-1790), an exceptional talent on the violin. The two-movement format is similar to Kraus's early string quartets (VB 178; Artaria Editions AE418), though in this case, the extensive sonata form first movement is followed by a through-composed one consisting of a slow pastorale (replete with bass drone in the violin) and an exotic faster section that includes material from the first movement. What makes this work interesting is the use of scordatura; the G string is to be tuned down to F, which makes it more useful from a harmonic standpoint in that the note can be used in the tonic, relative major, and all dominant-subdominant keys. The Basso part is completely figured—for this edition it has been realized by the editor - but given that Kraus specifically mentions only the keyboard instrument (clavicembalo), it is unlikely that it was performed as a continuo, i.e. with additional violoncello/contrabass, but rather was intended for harpsichord alone.Allan Badley.

For solo fingerstyle guitar it has a melody with a bass line of the common chord bass runs the old folk and blues players worked out in the first half of the 20th century. One benefit of this is that if you learn this arrangement you will also learn those chord runs in the keys of D and E. The end result turned out quite nice;This arrangement is more difficult than it may look. It is on the advanced side of Intermediate; But once you master it I think you will enjoy playing it and your audience should like it, It is arranged first in D and then in E
