Helping Hands is a march written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). It is dedicated to all the volunteers that make the Whit Friday March Contests possible, which is said to be the greatest free show on Earth. The piece is loosely programmatic in nature.The introduction is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands’ anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. There is the usual hustle and bustle before the second section sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day.The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. There is a small bridge that is reminiscent of previously used motifs and melodies before the hymn returns. Overall the composer has tried to make both the oboe part and the piano part interesting enough for music students to actually want to play the piece. There are also places where the individual instrumentalists can try their hand at improvising some details. Three hundred years ago this was a common practice and all performers were to an extent at least familiar with the art of improvising within a given framework. The composer believes that many performers today often neglect this important aspect of their craft and could greatly benefit by learning how to do this.

This is the famous wedding march from Op. 61 composed in 1842 and commonly performed as a recessional march at the end of a wedding. The piece was originally composed for orchestra then arranged for organ and performed by Mendelssohn himself. Mendelssohn: Wedding March Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is so popular that it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without it. It seems like it’s been around for eternity. In any case, it was only 150 years or so ago that the Wedding March came about. It was performed in Potsdam for the first time in 1842, as a piece of Mendelssohn’s music for the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was first used for a wedding in 1858 Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war! – It is these words from Shakespeare's Othello that the probably best-known work by the English composer Sir Edward William Elgar falls back on: the five marches which are contained in Pomp and Circumstance Marches, op. 39. The work was a sensational success from the very beginning, especially March No. 1 should be going around in the head of every lover of classical music. At its premiere in 1901 under the composer's direction, the audience requested two repeats; in 1902 the words of 'Land of Hope and Glory' were added to the march at the request of Edward VII for his coronation ceremonial. The resulting version is now performed every year at the Last Night of the Proms and as English hymn at the Commonwealth Games. Motivated by the success of the first two marches, Elgar composed another three which were performed in 1905, 1907 and 1930. No. 4 is as euphemistic and formal as No. 1 whereas the others are of a rather melancholy nature.

Perhaps the most often-sung processional or recessional hymn at Christmas services, O Come, All Ye Faithful is generally attributed to John Francis Wade (1711-1786), an English Catholic hymn-writer who authored both its Latin text and its tune, known as ADESTE FIDELES from the opening words of the text. Although more than two dozen English translations of Wade's text (c. 1743) by various writers exist, the 1841 translation by English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley (1802-1880) is the most commonly used.In addition to the four verses-with-refrain in Wade's text and Oakeley's translation, other hymn-writers penned additional stanzas, and it is not uncommon to hear six or seven sung today. This accompaniment for organ, brass quintet, and timpani is based on the four original stanzas as translated by Oakeley, with all but the final verse employing the standard harmonization from The English Hymnal (1906).
