Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767547). Allegro Spiritoso came about in response to the Covid-19 lockdown. I had been looking for inspiration for a new brass piece and these ideas finally gelled into this single movement work. The opening requires controlled flutter tonguing from the trumpets and glissandos from both the horns and the trombone. This first set of ideas are angry and frustrated, coming in sharp and bitter contrasts between the fluttering of the trumpets and the repetitive semitone on the tuba. Although in F (concert) this section really doesn't have a key centre. Each outburst instead uses a set of pitches ultimately derived from the Gregorian chant of the Dies Irae which appears later in the piece.I imagined how it must feel to be trapped in the house for weeks on end by the lockdown and the fear of catching the virus, combined with the lack of any real leadership from the British government. The interlocking tuba, trombone and horn rhythms (occasionally passed to 2nd. trumpet) drive the music forward and represent, in a way, the mutating virus which underlies all the troubled emotions caused by the lockdown itself and the feelings of isolation and, indeed, abandonment which many people feel.Half way between letters B and C, the trombone plays a kind of distorted motif reminiscent of a Chorale melody which leads us into a section devoted to those who have died (and continue to die) because of the disease. From letter C to the end, the main melodic motifs come from the Dies Irae, part of the Catholic Mass for the Dead (Requiem). Stated first in the Trumpets, the Tuba takes over the melody in augmentation with fragments passed around the ensemble with interjections from the angry motifs of the first section.Finally, the music begins to quieten and work towards the finish. The Dies Irae melody is reduced to a kind of skeleton of itself (all repeated notes removed) which ends the piece over the tuba/horn ostinato. The whole piece is 2 minutes and 57 seconds long and is - though quite by accident - an exact multiple of 19 bars long (114).It's a very dramatic and angry piece and therefore is quite dissonant. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but well worth a listen.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1431445). “O Worship the King” is a free paraphrase of Psalm 104 (largely verses 1-13 and 24-33) by Sir Robert Grant (1779-1838), an Anglo-Indian lawyer who served as a member of Parliament as well as Governor of Bombay. Influenced by William Kethe's paraphrase of the same psalm, Grant's “O Worship the King” first appeared in Edward Bickersteth’s Christian Psalmody (1833) and later appeared in a posthumous volume of Grant’s work, Sacred Poems (1839), edited by his brother Charles.Grant's text includes six verses; many hymnals abbreviate it, leaving off the concluding one. This arrangement, employing the tune HANOVER by William Croft (1678-1727), includes music for verses 1-5, and may be furthered abbreviated to four by eliminating the repeat on verses 1-2. The Herald Angels Sing†first appeared in the 1739 collection, Hymns and Sacred Poems, by Wesley and his brother John (1703-1791) under the title “Hymn for Christmas-Day.â€Based on a verse from the Gospel of Luke (“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.†— 2:14), the hymn tells of an angelic host singing praises from Heaven above to Christ — the God incarnate, Savior and Redeemer of the world. George Whitefield, a fellow Anglican cleric and founder with the Wesley brothers of the evangelical movement known as Methodism, adapted the hymn and published it in his 1754 Collection of Hymns for Social Worship. Additional revisions were made by other editors, including the repetition of the opening lines, “Hark! the herald angels sing / glory to the new-born king†at the end of each stanza, as it is commonly sung today.Wesley envisioned his hymn being sung to the same tune as his “Christ the Lord is Risen Today†(published as “Hymn for Easter-Day†in Hymns and Sacred Poems). However, the tune MENDELSSOHN, an adaptation by English musician William H. Cummings (1831-1915) of music from Felix Mendelssohn’s 1840 secular cantata, Festgesang, is overwhelmingly associated with Wesley’s text today. This arrangement for trombone, flute, and piano brings together two hymn tunes that are especially popular at the American holiday of Thanksgiving, but appropriate at any time of year. We gather together are the opening words to a poem written by the Dutch poet and composer Adrianus Valerius in 1597 to celebrate the Dutch victory in a long-standing dispute with Spain. 1878, the Austrian composer/conductor Edward Kremser arranged six Dutch folk songs for men's voices, including Prayer of Thanksgiving: Old Dutch Melody, with texts in German. In 1894, Theodore Baker (editor of Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians) translated the German text of Prayer of Thanksgiving into the familiar English version, We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing, that is sung today. Now Thank We All Our God is Catherine Winkworth's (1827-1878) translation of the German Nun Danket Alle Gott, written by Lutheran clergyman and hymn-writer Martin Rinckart (1586-1649). Rinckart's text, based on a passage from Ecclesiasticus, was set to a chorale tune by Johann Cruger (1598-1662) in his 1647 collection, Praxis pietatis melica (The Practice of Piety in Song), a hymnal for use in public worship and private devotions. One of the most popular English hymns, “Joy to the World†began not as a Christmas carol but as a lyrical paraphrase of Psalm 98 written in 1719 by the English Congregational minister, theologian, and hymn writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748).Watts published the poem in his collection, The Psalms of David, Imitated in the Language of The New Testament. The free paraphrase is Watts’ Christological interpretation of the psalm, celebrating Jesus’ role as King of both his church and the world. More than a century later, the second half of Watts' poem was adapted and set to music by the American music educator and hymn-tune composer Lowell Mason (1792-1872) in his Occasional Psalms and Hymn Tunes (1836). Mason based the music, in part, on excerpts from  George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) oratorio Messiah, with the descending major scale accompanying the opening words, “Joy to the world! William Blake (1757-1827), a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age, published the lyric poem The Lamb in his collection, Songs of Innocence, in 1789.The Lamb is presented as from the viewpoint of, and in the voice of, a child. In the first stanza, the child asks the lamb if it knows its Creator; in the second, it tells the creature, by means of metaphor, that its Creator is the Lord Jesus Christ, who like the lamb took on the flesh of a created being, “little,†“meek,†and “mild.†The child declares that he/she shares with the creature the name of the One who is, in Christian belief, both the sacrificial Lamb and the Shepherd of his flock. Perhaps the most often-sung processional or recessional hymn at Christmas services, O Come, All Ye Faithful is generally attributed to John Francis Wade (1711-1786), an English Catholic hymn-writer who authored both its Latin text and its tune, known as ADESTE FIDELES from the opening words of the text. Although more than two dozen English translations of Wade's text (c. 1743) by various writers exist, the 1841 translation by English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley (1802-1880) is the most commonly used.In addition to the four verses-with-refrain in Wade's text and Oakeley's translation, other hymn-writers penned additional stanzas, and it is not uncommon to hear six or seven sung today. This accompaniment for organ, brass quintet, and timpani is based on the four original stanzas as translated by Oakeley, with all but the final verse employing the standard harmonization from The English Hymnal (1906). All Things Bright and Beautiful is a beloved hymn written by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), an Anglo-Irish poet known for her hymns There is a Green Hill Far Away and Once in Royal David's City as well as her metrical paraphrase of St. Patrick's Breastplate (a prayer attributed to Patrick, patron saint of Ireland), known by its opening words, I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity. An exposition of the clause of the Apostles' Creed that describes God as maker of heaven and earth, All Things Bright and Beautiful was published in Alexander's Hymns for Little Children in 1848. It was later included in The English Hymnal (1906) with a tune composed by W.H. One of America's most recognizable and beautiful folk tunes, Shenandoah had by the mid-ninteenth century achieved wide popularity on both land and sea.American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that Shenandoah was a sea-shanty and that the composers likely were French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River — men who sought their fortunes as trappers and traders, loners who became friendly with and sometimes married Native American women. American sailors heading down the Mississippi River picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty — a work song — that they sang while hauling in the anchor.Various versions of the song, and various lyrics to the tune, exist. Some believe that the song refers to the Shenandoah river. Others suggest that it is of Native American origin and tells the tale of Sally, the daughter of an Algonquin Indian chief, Shenandoah, who is courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Other versions of the song have linked it to riverboat men, cavalry men, mountain men, and Civil War soldiers.
