Peet du Toit #6198683. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802652). New York Mining Disaster 1941 is the debut American single by the British-Australian pop group the Bee Gees, released on 14 April 1967. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb.Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song while sitting on a darkened staircase at Polydor Records following a power cut. The song recounts the story of a miner trapped in a cave-in. He is sharing a photo of his wife with a colleague (Mr. Jones) while they hopelessly wait to be rescued. According to the liner notes for their box-set Tales from the Brothers Gibb (1990), this song was inspired by the 1966 Aberfan mining disaster in Wales. According to Robin, there actually had also been a mining disaster in New York in 1939, but not in 1941, and he thought New York sounded more glamourous.In the second and third verses, the lyrical lines get slower and slower, as if to indicate that life is about to end for the miners.The darker sounds of the Flügelhorn, harmonised by the French Horn, depict the dangerous alleys of death miners are facing every day. A potential fatality is lurking every day. The sustained notes of the muted trumpet and the trombone symbolise the sirens and alarms down under - as warning signs. The simple bass drum effect denotes the time that goes by during the unknown and the working pace. The tuba part suggests moving forward, despite the daunting situation.I hope to have captured some of the context and story in this arrangement by a super group. Enjoy!

In 1996 it was released on CD on the album Bix Beiderbecke 1927–1930.[3] According to Philip R. Evans, Bix Beiderbecke's biographer, in the second chorus of this recording, violinist Joe Venuti can be heard singing Barnacle Bill the Shit-head, either to express his attitude toward the record producer, or typical of his wacky sense of humor. Esten Spurrier, a friend of Beiderbecke's, is quoted by Evans as saying that Beiderbecke told him he could not believe the record would be pressed and had felt that it had been done just for laughs. Beiderbecke cut loose on the tune with what is believed to be one of his finest cornet solos. John Valby (aka Dr. Dirty) also recorded the song.The tune has inspired a Fleischer Studios Betty Boop cartoon and two films, as well as the name of a rock on Mars. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five (then known as The Elks Rendezvous Band) recorded a clean version in 1938.[4] In the first Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Popeye the Sailor (1933), Barnacle Bill was used as the recurring theme for the Bluto character. Pierrot, or Harlequin? (2023) is based on stock characters from the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition. Columbina has a choice of partner – Pierrot, or Harlequin? Or maybe she will select neither of them. In this set of triple variations, Pierrot and Harlequin compete for Columbina's attention and favour. Pierrot is deep, quiet, thoughtful, and loving, but sometimes melancholic. Harlequin is light-hearted, extrovert, and fun to be with, but somewhat shallow and brash. Columbina herself is coquettish, impulsive, and unpredictable. How will the story end between these imperfect characters? The performer gets to select one of three possible endings as the piece nears its conclusion.Pierrot, or Harlequin? was commissioned by the International Guitar Festival Homenaje 2023. The premiere was given by Giacomo Susani at Barco Teatro, Padova, Italy, on 10th November 2023.Pierrot, or Harlequin?
