Kaplan fondly recalls interesting his young son in classical music by asking him to play the trills of this prelude while Kaplan played the rest of the notes in an impromptu, piano-three-hands arrangement. The fugue was analyzed in Kaplan's college counterpoint class as a quintessential example, exhibiting many of the standard fugal techniques in Bach's practice. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also available on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.

Arrangement for woodwind quintet by Daniel Kaplan of Vivaldi's wonderful Concerto Grosso Op. 3 No. 11, RV 565 (from his L'Estro Armonico of 1711). Note especially the fantastic fugue that constitutes the third movement, and the delectable sicilienne of the fourth movement. This is the concerto that Bach arranged as his Organ Concerto No 3 (BWV 596), but Vivaldi's original version is fleeter and has greater rhythmic drive (although, in various places, Bach's example was followed in regard to realization of the figured bass and ornamentation). This is part of Kaplan's project to arrange great classics for woodwind quintet, of which several arrangements have now been completed. The woodwind quintet has the intimacy of chamber music, yet is ideal to bring out the individual lines of contrapuntal pieces such as fugues. (Note that Kaplan's woodwind-quintet arrangement of the six Mozart–Bach Preludes and Fugues, K. 404a, is also avaiable on this website.).

Bach's Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, is a monumental work for organ, first performed by Bach (according to some scholars, possibly improvised on the spot!) in Hamburg in 1720. Over the years it has been arranged for various ensembles, including full orchestra, but this is the first arrangement I'm aware of for woodwind quintet. The character of the piece is somewhat changed, becoming livelier and more dance-like, but it remains a wonderful flight of fancy (arguably the original meaning of fugue), and by the end the attentive listener may be quite carried away.This is part of Kaplan's project to enhance and broaden the woodwind-quintet repertoire with both great classics and beautiful lesser-known works. The varied timbres of the woodwind instruments add clarity to contrapuntal writing, allowing the individual parts to be more clearly perceived and followed by the listener. This has been a beloved companion through the years, always in a prominent place on the piano. The first Prelude and Fugue is by turns introspective and knotty, and works well in a woodwind-quintet arrangement (even though here and there some notes are omitted—after all, a pianist has more than five fingers!—or raised or lowered by an octave). The woodwind quintet is ideal for contrapuntal music, since the distinctive color of each instrument helps to bring out the contrapuntal lines. This is part of Kaplan's project to broaden the repertoire of music available to woodwind-quintet players by arranging both great classics and little-known gems. Dvorak's charming and wonderful Bagatelles are rarely performed, because he wrote them for two violins, cello, and harmonium, and who has a harmonium anymore? (They are sometimes performed with substitution of a piano for the harmonium, but the harmonium version is far superior, as the piano lacks the sustaining quality of the harmonium.) But they are a natural for woodwinds! Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has also arranged several other great works for this ensemble. Many of them are now for sale on this webste, and more will be uploaded soon.Note that due to Dvorak's key signatures and the varying tessituras of the parts, the movements sometimes call for oboe and sometimes for English horn, and the clarinet parts alternate between clarinet in B-flat and in A.

As part of a campaign to enrich the woodwind quintet repertoire, Kaplan has arranged for woodwind quintet the six preludes and fugues for string trio by Mozart (based on fugues, and some preludes, by J.S. and W.F. Bach, with the addition of four original preludes by Mozart). Around 1782 (as recounted by Mozart in a letter to his father), Mozart used to attend Sunday musicales at the home of Baron van Swieten, who required Bach and Handel to be played by all. Presumably it was to comply with the Baron's wishes that Mozart created these arrangements plus original preludes. The arranger surmises that Mozart's immersion in Bachian counterpoint influenced his own works, which increasingly featured interesting, elaborate, musically and emotionally exciting fugues (such as those in the K.387 string quartet, the Jupiter Symphony, and the Requiem). Given Mozart's genius, it is not all surprising that the fugues he selected are all of great musical interest.Note that in arranging string music for woodwinds, one often finds the English Horn better suited to the tessitura than the oboe. The main challenge is to share the string parts among the wind instruments in such a way as to permit the players to breathe. This the arranger has done, but welcomes feedback from players.
