DARKTOWN STRUTTERS' BALL - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Shelton Brooks wrote this bouncy little song in a different age - where Darktown was an area of a city much like Chinatown is today. It tells the story of the Ball where women would wear their finest dresses and men would strut - a sort of swaggering dance.Derek Hasted writes I first arranged this piece for the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, in a Dixieland-jazz setting, which I have retained in this version for 4 guitars or a large ensemble. The bass part would also suit an octave (or contra) guitar reading from treble clef. This line is a little easier than the other lines, so it's ideal for a mixed ability ensemble as well as making a real contrast in a conventional guitar concert. In the final chorus, one can almost hear a tenor banjo above the bass, and a clarinet swirling above the tune. Audiences love this piece!

The second reminds us that life comes not without dark times, confusion, disagreement, and struggle, sometimes within a life, sometimes within a day. However, these can be resolved, overcome, and when we do, we are free to enjoy the joys.

For the straight way was lost was commissioned and premiered by The Darkwood Consort in Boise, Idaho. But it has since been performed throughout the US and Europe many times in many duet combinations: Bb Clarinet and Viola, Bb Clarinet and Cello; Alto Sax and Viola, Alto Sax and Cello, and Viola and Bass Clarinet (the original!). The live video concert performance seen here is for Bb Clarinet and Cello, performed by Natalie Grata and Chris Erickson in Orlando, Florida. The title became unintentionally more and more appropriate over time, as the work has undergone multiple revisions and tweaking, and experiments. The title comes from a passage in Dante’s The Divine Comedy, and I chose it because, first, it includes the name of the ensemble that commissioned it from me, but second, it also seems a good description of how the compositional process sometimes goes and did go with this piece; sometimes while working, the piece takes unexpected turns (almost of its own volition) that must then be dealt with: Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vitami retrovai per una selva oscura,che la diritta via era smarrita. Compared to the more familiar quintets of Mozart, Weber and Brahms, this composition is not as well known. However, it is every bit the equal of it's more famous brothers, and deserves to receive more recognition. The first movement alternates dark and troubled sections with livelier, folk dance like music with almost the feeling of Dvorak's slavonic dances. The second movement features a long melodic line, which is decorated with increasingly elaborate lower parts. The third movement is a frenetic and nervous scherzo, which switches between 9/8 and 3/4 times giving it a stuttering feeling at times. The finale returns to the minor key dramatic feel of the first movement, with much use of the scotch snap rhythm adding another folk music-like flavour. Overall, stylistically this piece fits beautifully between the Weber and Brahms quintets, and should be more widely performed. Originally published for clarinet in A and string quartet, this version presents the work to be played on solo clarinet in Bb accompanied by a quartet of two Bb clarinets, an alto clarinet in Eb (although a substitute part for another clarinet in Bb is included) and a bass clarinet in Bb. The solo part has been left unchanged; the string parts have been altered to suit the new medium. The somewhat stratospheric first violin part has been tamed and brought down to a more suitable range; the articulation and dynamics have been edited and corrected so as to present a more unified work. The problematic third movement, with its unmarked and hard to spot shifts between 9/8 and 3/4 has been presented in a more readable fashion.

A musical score or lead sheet was intended to be interpreted for style and tempo, and while some of those interpretations may not necessarily have been wrong, quite often they weren't always what the author intended, but face it, it's just plain hard to write music exactly in the way that the song is intended to be sung. Enter the computer age, and the ability for performers to understand that the interval of a note is an absolute time interval which puts the natural rhythm, or beat, of a musical arrangement at about 25% faster than a beat per second, which is why I arrange music to be performed at ~ 80 BPM, which means, approximately 80 beats per minute. That is not etched in stone, but it does represent the comfort zone to which the performer should subscribe when singing or playing a song. Contemporary jazz singers are, in my opinion, therefore obligated to re-arrange the songs that they intend to record, to avoid the embarrassment of getting it wrong. It happens. Timing is of the essence. Many of those old jazz classics are well served with a rewrite for the contemporary artist.The Nearness of You was written in 1938 by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics by Ned Washington, and was performed in the 1938 Paramount movie, Romance in the Dark, by Gladys Swarthout of the Metropolitan Opera. It has been recorded numerous times over the years, and it maintains its popularity today. The guitar chording for this arrangement is targeted toward the experienced and more advanced players, but I encourage the experienced intermediate level player to take up the challenge of learning to play this song. It will be a rewarding experience.

Lift Every Voice and Sing was initially written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson in 1905 and has become known a national anthem for African-Americans. The initial hymn tune is intense with grandeur and immense hope. With this arrangement; I have set the music more somberly to reflect the seriousness of the text that speaks of the bitterness and anguish of America’s dark racial past that is still rampant today. This allows the listener to reflect on the text thoughtfully. Remarkably, I have heard this hymn many times throughout my lifetime both in predominantly Caucasian denominations and predominantly African-African American denominations and the differences in interpretation are fascinating. White congregations tend to sing this hymn spritely with great pomp and circumstance while the Black congregations tend to sing it more labored and meditative as if it were a dirge. I believe both interpretations are valid, but interesting given its context. This arrangement is written for medium-high voice, cello obbligato and piano accompaniment.

The piece starts off with a quiet waltz, lullaby-esque, providing a tonal anchor and tranquility. As it moves into the next section, we hear the first main melodic idea. While still maintaining this idea of calm and ambient energy, the main theme should be reflective of an old spaghetti western film. The vibraphonist should play loud and proud.When the piece moves into the heavier 6/8 section, the battery should be sensitive to the melodic instruments. There should be a quiet forward energy weaving through the entire piece.

Schott Music - Digital #Q20011. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q20011). Inevitable Rifts for string quintet, like Schubert’s Quintet in C, D.956, adds an extra cello to the string quartet. This undoubtedly makes for a richer sound, but what I wanted to explore was the tensions and differences created by forming an alliance between the viola and two cellos quite separate from the two violins, a rift heard at the very start with the lower instruments playing dark, pulsating chords, and the violins moving together in a slow broken cantilena. As the drama unfolds there are times when roles are reversed and also where new groupings are formed. The full quintet eventually coalesces in an extended central section based on the rocking figuration that accompanies a brief transitional dialogue for the two cellos. Inevitably, further rifts arise and the work ends with the two groups apart, although this time the violins try to emulate the pulsating chords, but even they part company at the very end. Rift, of course, also means a chasm or valley, and the placing at the beginning of the violins in a higher register with widely spaced intervals, and the viola and cellos at the bottom of their register, was a deliberate evocation of this kind of landscape. The work was commissioned by the Musiktage Mondsee Festival in Austria for Heinrich Schiff and the Rosamunde Quartet for its premiere performance on 4 September 2009. John Casken.

The Symphonie fantastique is a piece of programme music that tells the story of a gifted artist who, in the depths of hopelessness and despair because of his unrequited love for a woman, has poisoned himself with opium. The piece tells the story of the artist's drug-fuelled hallucinations, beginning with a ball and a scene in a field and ending with a march to the scaffold and a satanic dream. Having grown sure that his love is unappreciated, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of the narcotic, too small to kill him, plunges him into a sleep accompanied by the most horrible visions. He dreams that he has killed the one he loved, that he is condemned, that he is being led to execution, and that he is witnessing his own guillotining. The procession advances to the sounds of a march sometimes dark and fierce, sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a muffled sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a last thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow. This arrangement follows closely to the original Orchestral score and is an ideal addition to the Brass Band Library.
