What's more, for this series I offer the tune from the anthology along with another version: The alternate version adds divisions, a common performance practice for Renaissance and English Country Dance music. These duos are delightful for study as well as performance. We are recording all of our duo anthologies in 2015, and that challenging but satisfying journey has inspired us to explore more deeply the practice of adding variations and divisions to Playford's music. William Blake (1757-1827), a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age, published the lyric poem The Lamb in his collection, Songs of Innocence, in 1789.The Lamb is presented as from the viewpoint of, and in the voice of, a child. In the first stanza, the child asks the lamb if it knows its Creator; in the second, it tells the creature, by means of metaphor, that its Creator is the Lord Jesus Christ, who like the lamb took on the flesh of a created being, “little,†“meek,†and “mild.†The child declares that he/she shares with the creature the name of the One who is, in Christian belief, both the sacrificial Lamb and the Shepherd of his flock. In a nod to the medieval sound that a choir conjures up when singing this modern setting, the guitar part is played with a Capo on the 3rd fret, to mimic the pitch range of the lute and to make the sound lighter and more ethereal. The clarinet part is played at pitch, so the full score is set in two keys - the capo does all the magic!Dynamics are suggested that mirror the original (with choir, organ and full orchestra) but the guitar fingering and the clarinet breath points are yours to choose - just make sure you make the performance yours...I hope you enjoy performing this!

In the past 6 years he has commissioned me to write two works for his ensemble, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra: 1) Mambo!!! (2003) 2) Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld (2005) This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great! The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design. I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable. In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores. In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog. In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.

As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable. In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores. In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog. In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.

What's more, for this series I offer the tune from the anthology along with another version: The alternate version adds divisions, a common performance practice for Renaissance and English Country Dance music. These duos are delightful for study as well as performance. As Kammeraderie, we are recording all of our duo anthologies in 2015, and that challenging but satisfying journey has inspired us to explore more deeply the practice of adding variations and divisions to Playford's music. The art of divisions makes the performance unique and also extends it. I've decided to make the results available as sheet music in the Regal Playford series.

Although the tune has several verses, the orchestration here gradually grows to mimic the original. The guitar, of course, cannot mimic the endless sustain of the pipe organ, so I have made the setting a little more guitar-like with arpeggios and with extra movement in the harmony lines, so that there is an illusion of much more sustain. A listen to the sound-file alongside the music for sale should show that the result is restful and fun to play.Dynamics are suggested that mirror the original (with choir, organ and full orchestra) but the fingering are yours to choose - just make sure you make the performance yours...I hope you enjoy performing this!
