The original version of E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon in 2001 and premiered by the Eastwind Trio d’Anches (the faculty reed trio from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with the composer on bassoon) during a tour in New Zealand and Australia in May 2001. The premiere of the version for saxophone trio was performed by members of the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet on February 5, 2008.E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was inspired by the Australasian tour and my return home to New Zealand as a performer. Another inspiration was that my dear Grandmother passed away at the age of 94 in February 2001. Due to this there are elements of sadness and happiness throughout the piece. The bittersweet first movement begins melancholy, with a melody that freely switches between minor and major modes, but ends up with a lively dancing section focusing on happy memories, where the chickens from my grandmother’s farm may even be heard. The second movement is lively throughout with extensive use of mixed meter and includes a jazz rock interlude.While the work does not contain any actual New Zealand elements in the music, it was evocative of my time spent there growing up. It is in a style typical of my writing, containing jazzy influences combined with the more traditional. The title is given in Maori (the language of the native Polynesian race in New Zealand) and English and merely relates to the fact that it is written for three woodwind instruments. This work has been performed throughout North America and the South Pacific.This work also exists in two double reed versions: one for oboe, English horn, and bassoon, and another for oboe and two bassoons.

Green Eyes is a a popular song, orginally written in Spanish under the title Aquellos Ojos Verdes (Those Green Eyes) by Adolfo Utrera and Nilo Menendez in 1929. The English translation waa made by Eddie Rivera and Eddie Woods in 1931. The song, a bolero, was written in 1929 and recorded in Cuba in the same year. It was the only major hit, both originally in Cuba and then again in the Latin community in New York for the Cuban pianist, Nilo Menendez. The lyrics were written by Cuban tenor, Adolfo Utrera. This arrangement for Niibori Guitar Orchestra is inspired by the rendition by popular Latin group Los Panchos. It is intricately scored for 3 Alto parts, 2 prime parts, bass, contrabass and guitarons. The Alto 3 part can be played by an Alto cembalo, giving a distinctive ponticello sound that would then nicely contrast the nylon string quality of Alto 1 and 2.

The work explores something of how we might experience winter. The title is a play on words and the normal meaning of reels as dances infects both the first movement, with its lilting triplet rhythms, and the last movement which incorporates a vigorous reel-like unison melody that unfolds as part of a series of energetic episodes. The song of the second movement is a long singing line given to the cello, and the ensemble here, as elsewhere, is coloured in the percussion by the use of a steel pan. John Casken.

There’s not enough depth and engagement in them, and nothing that supports the everyday music teacher. So I set out to create something that I would feel comfortable giving to my private students to help them grow as musicians. There are many types of music in the book: etudes, exercises, warm-ups, backwards and upside down duets (one person plays normally, the other person reads the music in an unusual way), improvised music, and composition. Musical styles range across a variety of cultures and genres such as classical, blues, fiddle tunes, marches, contemporary, musicals, and more. Using carefully crafted etudes, exercises, and songs in a variety of styles, your bassoon students are going to to find immediate success. The bite-sized examples encourage students to focus on tone, as they extend their technique and range on this wonderful instrument. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.O Christmas Tree is a German Christmas song based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a String Quintet, consisting of 2 Violins, 1 Viola and 2 Violoncellos, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. This is the first of Greg Bartholomew's three choral settings of text From the Odes of Solomon, as recorded by the Ars Brunensis Chorus. The Odes of Solomon are believed to have been written around the year 100 A.D., and include strong parallels to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Scholars have debated whether the Odes should be considered Jewish, Christian or Gnostic, and whether they were first written in Greek, Hebrew or Syriac. Early Christian writings refer to and quote from them. A Syriac manuscript containing the text of most of the Odes was discovered in 1909 by the English scholar J. Rendel Harris, and other partial texts in various languages have also been found. There are 42 Odes. Some fragments are still missing from Odes I and III, and no part of Ode II has yet been found. For these choral settings, I selected text from four of the Odes of Solomon which I found particularly compelling. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

Following from the success of the Hits of the Renaissance for Strings, featuring well-known dances from Terpsichore by Michael Praetorius, this arrangement is from another classic book of dances from the same period. Pierre Phalèse (1510-1575) was a Flemish publisher and his First Book of Dances, an extensive collection of dances in four parts, was published in Leuven in 1571. They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication of 1571, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. While you can add flute, recorder, oboe, glockenspiel or whatever you want, additional instruments are not essential but can add contrasting tone colour. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A piano is distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Tenor Horn in E Flat.For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations. Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Odessa Bulgar is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Odessa Bulgar is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal.
