Symphonie Fastnachtique Part 1 (Four Tunes from the Basler Fasnacht, a Swiss Carnival) Der Arabi Nr 1, 2 & 3 (Trad) Wettstein Marsch by Hermann Suter 1870-1926 Arranged by Des McNutty The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as D’ drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate together with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique , with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Symphonie Fastnachtique, part 1 contains four melodies from the Cliques: Der Arabi Nr 1, 2 and 3, followed by the Wettstein Marsch by Swiss composer Hermann Huber (1870-1926). The melodies in Der Arabi may sound familiar but the chances are that they pre-date their more famous versions. For example, Der Arabi Nr 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. This version for oboe band is a mixture of original piccolo voicings and indulgence by the arranger. Some of the part for English Horn (or Taille) is based on an optional 4th voice, the Zierstimm. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A standard march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Gniege! (Enjoy!)

In this treatment of Psalm 134, all instruments, except the bass trombone, play their entire part in one position or valve combination with a lot of slurs. Attention must be paid to rhythmic accuracy, both at the beginning of notes and their precise ending. For the best effect, a full tenuto is observed, sustaining each note until it either stops or clicks to the next. Not as easy as it looks! The instruments played can be varied; • Voice 1: Trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn in B♠pressing 1-3; or low F-trumpet open. • Voice 2: Trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn in B♠or bugle or clarion. • Voice 3: Alto trombone (4th pos.); an E♠horn, pressing 1 & 2; or natural trumpet in C. • Voice 4: Tenor trombone in 6th pos. or French horn (open in F) or a baritone/euphonium pressing 1-3. • Voice 5: Tenor trombone in 1st pos. or baritone/euphonium open. • Voice 6: Ideally Bass trombone but fits on tuba, tenor trombone/euphonium etc. A standard brass quintet plus one guest could distribute the parts thusly: • Voices 1 & 2: Two trumpets. • Voice 3: Guest on alto trombone, E♠horn or natural trumpet in C. • Voice 4: Horn open in F as 1st trombone. • Voice 5: Trombone as 2nd trombone • Voice 6: Tuba Some tune-up/ ensemble tuning exercises are included. This setting is a mixture of styles described as contre-pointillist; counterpoint in a natural pointillism where the Cantus Firmus and other lines weave between overlapping harmonic series; and diatonic clusters, which at best will remind listeners of a carillon of church bells. Loys Bourgeois' melody for Psalm 134, better known to Anglophones as The Old Hundredth, was added to the Genevan Psalter in 1551. Leading reformist Calvin had commissioned vernacular (spoken language of the people; in this case, French) settings of Psalm melodies for Protestants to sing and the Genevan Psalter was first published in 1539. Subsequent editions added further melodies but some were still used for more than one Psalm. The lesser-known Lausanne Psalter was the first to give each Psalm its own melody. Psalm 134 is associated with Michaelmas (29th September) and Christmas festivities. Enjoy!

Published by Des Press (A0.1335183). White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin for the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn. It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and Bing Crosby's recording topped the Billboard chart in 1942, 1943 and 1944. It returned to the charts several more times, selling more than 50 million physical copies to date. This amount is doubled when cover versions by other artists are included. This arrangement is a Baroque-style instrumentation; two violins, a soloistic obbligato viola da gamba, organ and/or harpsichord (played tasto) and a part for a bass instrument or two, figured for the optional lute or theorbo. This is a new arrangement, rather than a transcription of a known version. It is in the same tonality as Bing Crosby's hit record but has only one framed chorus. The organ/ cembalo part, where treetops glisten in the snow, has a cheeky reference to a concert in which an organist triumphantly flipped the last page of their hardback score with such gusto that it dropped onto the keys in the silence between the end of an oratorio and the start of the applause. The part for viola da gamba might need some preparation by a competent player and would be quite a challenge for a daring cellist. The other parts are on the easy side of intermediate. The CKZD is based on a source from Lübeck, dated 1598; a book of principale Sonatas upon which a group of trumpeters and timpanists would improvise together. This piece was reconstructed following sources such as Bendenelli and the Toccata from Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. CKZD is most probably a dedication to Christian, König zu Dänemark (Christian, King of Denmark). This version was commissioned by Trummet, a historical natural-trumpet group led by Julian Zimmermann. The ideal sound picture is of a pyramid, with the weight at the bottom and a light top, dancing in the resonance of the overtones. The lower parts should be played with a full, vibrant sound and rhythmical, clear attack, giving welcome support to those above. Trumpets 5 and 6 must take care that their drone of a 5th is always pure, like a power-chord on a rock guitar. Further ornamentation in all parts, especially the clarini, is to be encouraged within the written structure.

These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! This arrangement of Happy Birthday was written in 2011 for Edward H Tarr's 75th birthday concert in Basel (CH). Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM

These arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM

Can't nothing bring me down - and as catchy as a pandemic; a lesson to us all. You've just gotta dance. It's a guaranteed hit at parties. This arrangement for oboe band is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun.
