An arrangement for wind sextet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and 2 horns) of the Evening Prayer (translates as Abendsegen in German) music from Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel. The opera, based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name, was composed in 1891 and 1892, and this is the most well known item from it. The Evening Prayer scene takes place in Act 2, but Humperdinck also used the same music at the start of the opera's overture from which this arrangement has been made. The set comprises full score and parts. Difficulty level : Intermediate/Advanced.

A beautiful slow melody in 4/4 followed by a rousing 6/4 trek with fanfares then returning to the slow melody in 4/4. Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and bands of around 2nd to 3rd section, although still possible with 4th section bands. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery. Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme. Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination. Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

The piece begins with a brooding bass rhythm, which underlies much of the composition, as melodies depict images of the evening sun's procession toward the horizon. At the moment of the sun's setting, a grand hymn emerges, the emotional high point of the journey as the fires of creation illuminates the world in God's glory, before cooling into a final reprise of the initial melody as the darkness of night settles in.While not an actual setting of the text, the original hymn-like melody in this piece is inspired by the ancient prayer called Phos Hilaron (O Gladsome Light), one of the earliest Christian hymns.This piece, written for piano duet (1-piano, 4-hands), is appropriate for concerts, or as a prelude or other instrumental moment in a church service, especially evening services. While it is not specific to any season, the mood is also appropriate for services in Advent, Lent, Holy Week, or other times of reflection.Melodies move throughout the range of the piano and across both players. The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mindâ€, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durhamâ€, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending.
