ABIDE WITH ME Piano Track Viola & Piano DuetAbide with Me is a Christian hymn composed by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte and English composer William Henry Monk's tune entitled Eventide. The text was written in 1847 as Lyte was dying from tuberculosis. He died three weeks later.The text for the hymn is based on Luke 24:29 where the disciples asked Jesus to abide with them toward evening as the day is coming to an end. This hymn is a prayer asking God to stay with us throughout life, our trials, and even death. In 1853, still grieving for his three-year-old daughter's passing from brain ramollissement, the words of Scottish cleric Henry Lyte's hymn - Abide with me - came to English choirmaster William Monk's mind.  Although the hymn already had a tune, he was inspired by the thought of another and wrote the noble EVENTIDE within 10 minutes.  It was first published in 1861 in Hymns Ancient & Modern. It is performed at funerals, at Remembrance services, and even at sporting events (FA Cup).This setting is in the key of Eb Major, the same as the Hymnals, permitting it to be used as an accompaniment to singing and on its own.  The instrumental leads and harmonies differ for verses 1/3, 2/4 and verse 5.Instrumentation is for British Brass Band instruments of Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium (TC).  F Horn and Bass Clef Euphonium alternates are included.Duration ~ 4:40 10 pages.

Samuels (A0.828663). 2020 SMP Press Composition Contest Entry for both the Contemporary and Sacred instrumental ensemble categories: For this easy arrangement (alternatively entitled, The Last Post at Eventide), the original Eventide hymn is transcribed for brass quintet, setting 2 trumpets to play the soprano & alto parts, the horn & trombone to double the tenor part, and the tuba (or a 2nd trombone) to play the bass part. Then a final variation verse is added, in which the 1st trumpet plays a slightly-modified version of The Last Post as a descant, while the other 4 brass instrumentalists play a slightly different setting of the Eventide hymn. (Consumers of Canadian Brass books of easy arrangements of hymns & Christmas carols will be familiar with this similar approach.) A piano/vocal hymn-style part is included for congregational singing. The approximate playing time is 3 minutes, depending on the number of verses and repeats required for a performance.
