It was the set piece for C Grade in the New Zealand National Band Contest in 2022. Programme Notes: From a young age, I was always interested in castles and history, and have visited many castles in my home country of Wales, which is sometimes called the “castle capital of the worldâ€. At one time Wales had about 600 castles, of which over 100 are still standing, either as ruins or restored buildings. The remainder have been reduced to ditches, mounds and earthworks. Visiting these amazing historically significant buildings has allowed me to reflect on their importance and purpose. In their day they were the centres of thriving communities and it is through their value as the focus of the community, that the three movements have developed their individual characteristics. The first movement depicts a large formidable castle, towering over the neighbouring lands, exuding power, authority and law, complete with noblemen and knights; the second movement describes the pastoral scenes around the castle, and the commoners going about their ordinary lives; the third demonstrates the military function of the castle which was to protect: when coming under siege, the people eventually triumph, the enemy defeated.

Published by Daniel Carr (A0.918710). The Sonata for Flute and Piano is the longest and most complex work I have composed for Flute and Piano. My goal for this piece was to push myself as a composer, and to push both flautist and pianist to their absolute limits – both musically and technically. The flute is capable of much more than just being pretty – and in this work it depicts violence, drama, joy, sorrow and heroism. Extended techniques are used throughout the sonata (aire, percussive tonguing, pitch bends, harmonics and flutter tonguing) but always within a tonal framework. The first movement starts out peacefully, as if beginning a legend, with a folk-like and serene melody. The second and third themes are more percussive and rhythmical – the flute and piano engaging in a violent, interlaced dance in a section marked Allegro Swordfight. In the recapitulation, the first theme reappears in much more dramatic form. The second movement begins with a forceful march before a darker and more cabalistic middle section emerges. The movement builds to a formidable climax in the final measures. The third movement begins simply and quietly, offering a respite from the energy of the first two movements, and quoting themes from both of them. It then leads attacca (without pause) into the final movement, which surges forward relentlessly before a lyrical section provides the flute an opportunity to soar above wave-like arpeggios in the piano. The piece ends on an ethereal note, with flute and piano hovering near silence in their upper ranges.

At first sight the score will not appear formidable. However, given the speed of the piece (Schubart marked it at a crotchet equals 152) and the need to allow the solo voices to speak, I believe the score to be challenge enough!Taking time to acquaint oneself with Schubert’s original will be time well spent in understanding both the storyline of Goethe’s poem and the structure of the piece . The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mindâ€, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durhamâ€, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending.
