Published by David Leech (A0.973273). Impresssions This song, a modal composition by John Coltrane, was released on an album by the same name in 1963. It has become a jazz standard, recorded by Wes Montgomery and Stanley Turrentine among others.This arrangement is fairly lengthy (367 measures) running between 7:30 to 8:30 depending on tempo. Tempo should be in the range of 220-240 quarter note beats per minute. There are three extended solos as well as a brief drum solo.Instrumentation is the standard big band: five saxes (a,a,t,t,b), five trumpets (the 5th is optional), four trombones, guitar, piano, bass & drums.The first tenor has a 96 bar ad lib solo. First trombone gets 80 bars, and the piano gets three choruses (the first is unaccompanied). Drums have a 16 bar solo leading back to a D.C. al Coda.Brass parts only have occasional high notes, a couple of high D’s and E flats in the lead trumpet. The most challenging aspect of this arrangement is the quick tempo.

It will need at least a 1st section band to handle the last movement. This might be a good piece to use in an entertainments contest. There is quite a bit for the percussion to do which took some doing as the original had none. The four movements represent my thoughts about Canada and its people. 1. March for the Frontiersmen: Canada has a lot of wilderness that has not been spoiled by man. This movement represents the rugged frontiersmen pushing through the Canadian forests. 2. The Great White Cold: I imagined the bitter freezing cold and icy beauty of Canadian winters (not that I have ever experienced such) and I used some slightly unusual techniques to create the impression of a cold wind blowing across the arctic scenery. 3. Campfire Songs: I had this vision of the great outdoors with Canadian families going camping in the mountainous regions sitting round their campfire at night and singing songs. I had no idea at the time whether Canadians were campfire songsters or what kinds of songs they might choose, so I selected a number of ’folk’ songs from the Great Canadian Tune Book and incorporated them into this movement. 4. The New Found Land: This movement moves to Canada’s eastern seaboard and I imagined new emigrants to the country arriving at a busy harbour and seeing all the hustle and bustle of a lively community and sea port. With some difficulty the debarkees find their land legs but then become absorbed in the lively new world to which they have moved.

To Schumann, the view of the Cathedral of Cologne was a highlight of his trips in the area surrounding Düsseldorf; even if there are no records testifying to his attending a church service, it almost seems as if the impressions of such a service are reflected in the fourth movement of the symphony which was originally entitled 'In the Character of the Accompaniment to a Solemn Ceremony'.

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and AntonÃn Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan KubelÃk played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

Duration: 7:00Synopsis:Four Divas arrive in heaven to learn there is not enough room for all of them in the Heavenly Chorus. Because too many tenors and basses are in Hell, only one of the sopranos will be allowed into the chorus. The sopranos are appalled that they must audition, but submit. After their impressive auditions, St. Peter cannot make a decision. Gabriel therefore mentions the Redemption Clause: If the sopranos go to Hell and do a selfless deed, they can bring back to Heaven as many tenors and basses as needed. To protect them in Hell, St. Peter grants them a special disguise.The Divas, St. Peter, and Gabriel arrive in Hell and listen to the stories of some of the tortured souls there. Just Jeanette meets Nelson Deadly and they fall in love. The Sandman arrives with the stage director, Orson and presents a task to the couple: If they don't fall asleep listening to Orson, they can take back to Heaven as many tenors and basses as they want. They fail the test, but because of a selfless act on their part, they are granted the release of the men. There is general rejoicing and all promise St. Peter they will never sing opera again. The first movement is a lively Presto, with passages reminiscent of English folk music, impressive fanfares and baroque style passage work. This is followed by a slower more wistful movement with rich chromatic harmonies. The third movement is slower again, with a florid piccolo solo in the central section accompanied by flowing semiquavers in all parts. The final movement is marked 'Dolente' and features rich jazz harmonies in slow tempo. This is a great piece for large flute choirs to include in their repertoire; the inclusion of the largest members of the flute family gives a depth and richness to the chords that is in credible. Suitable for players of Grade 4 upwards.

Latin.When Peter Cornelius (1824–1874), the musically and literarily talented and versatile artist, went to Weimar in 1852 to pursue further studies with Franz Liszt, the latter advised him to 'throw himself into writing sacred music with a will'. He heeded his advice and thereupon wrote a series of liturgical and religious pieces for men's choir as well as the song cycle 'Vater unser'. 'Domine salvum fac regem' too was composed by Cornelius in this context – in two versions: for a cappella men's choir and for solo tenor, mixed choir and orchestra. The version for men's choir was written in May 1852, setting to music in a 'speaking' and expressive manner the texts compiled from psalm and doxology, with colourful motet-like and block-like sections and a 'Gloria Deo', set as if chiselled, which introduces the final section – an impressive work.
