Hosanna, Loud Hosanna is a well-known Palm Sunday hymn that celebrates Jesus' special relationship with children and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Jeanette Threlfall wrote the text as a devotional poem in the mid-1800s. ​The tune most associate with the text, Ellacombe, comes from songbook of the Württemberg ducal court and was harmonized by W. H. Monk in the mid-1800s as well. The name Ellacombe is thought to be in honor of Henry Thomas Ellacombe, a specialist in bell ringing and an Anglican clergyman. This version was arranged by Mark R Lewis for 12-Bell ensemble. While the melody line for this arrangement is quite straightforward, the accompaniment part can be very active. Despite this, the piece should be quite manageable by most intermediate bell ringers. In the provided video of the performance, the bell tree is simply doubling the melody line and while this is a nice touch, it is not required for a faithful performance of the arrangement. Range: F#5-C7.

German.Es war 1996, als mir Christoph Poppen, der damalige Leiter des Münchener Kammerorchesters, von einem kuriosen Konzert in Münsing (Ammerland) erzählte: während eines seiner Konzerte mit dem Orchester in der dortigen Kirche gab es, für alle hör- und sichtbar, eines der größten Unwetter, das die Region je gesehen hatte. Dabei schlug der Blitz ein in eine Art Wahrzeichen des Ortes, eine mehrere Jahrhunderte alte Linde. Unter den Zuhörern damals: die dort lebende Dichterin und Schriftstellerin Diana Kempff. Sie war unmittelbar erschüttert vom Tod der Linde und schrieb unter diesem Eindruck einige Gedichte. Christoph Poppen wiederum war – wie in vielen anderen Zusammenhängen auch – genialer Vermittler und stellte alsbald den Kontakt zu mir her. Die Idee: am Ort des Geschehens, in der Münsinger Kirche, solle ein Jahr später die Uraufführung einer Art Requiem für diesen Baum, der so vieles „gesehen“ hatte, erklingen. Im Rahmen der Holzhauser Musiktagen mit den Texten von Diana Kempff und meiner (noch zu schreibenden) Musik. Es gab bald eine wunderbare, sehr intensive Begegnung von Diana Kempff und mir, bei der sie etwas für Schriftsteller nicht gerade Typisches tat: sie stellte mir frei, aus den vorliegenden Gedichten nach Belieben lediglich Teile, sogar nur Zeilenfragmente zu verwenden und auch die Reihenfolge nach meinen Bedürfnissen anzuordnen und zu gestalten. Sie begriff sofort (und wünschte!), dass durch die Musik ohnehin etwas Drittes, etwas ganz Anderes entstehen würde. Die Tatsache, dass wir Monate später eine sichtlich bewegte Diana Kempff auf die Bühne holen durfte, freute uns alle besonders. Ihre Lyrik ist Ausdruck einer offenkundig zutiefst gequälten Seele und kommt uns oft wunderlich-versponnen entgegen. Einer zerbrechlichen Zartheit steht eine bisweilen fast brutale Härte unversöhnlich gegenüber. Das Schubert’sche „Fremd bin ich eingezogen“ gilt für sie in besonderer Weise und äußert sich in ihren Versen in einer Nähe zu allem Fremden (trotz des gleichzeitigen manischen Umkreisens des Eigenen und der eigenen Erinnerung), Abseitigen und auch (bei aller gleichzeitigen Skepsis) Übernatürlichen. Dieses geisterhaft-spukige Element versuchte ich durch meine Textauswahl und mit musikalischen Mitteln in diesen nun „Sieben Abgesängen“ zu verdeutlichen. Das erste Stück ist eine karge Studie über das Verrinnen der Zeit, das Nichts; das Zweite beschwört den Regen (den heilbringenden) herbei, der dann später – wenngleich mit entsetzlicher Wirkung – auch kommt. Den dritten Abgesang habe ich „Tanz der toten Seelen“ betitelt; es ist ein Zwiefacher, der jedoch durch seine düster-halbseidene „Wiener“ Chromatik alles Liebenswürdig-Oberbayerische längst verloren hat. Das klanglich vielleicht avancierteste und dichteste Stück ist der vierte Abgesang, der ganz aus der Perspektive der Linde selbst erzählt wird. Der fünfte Abgesang zu den Worten „Und wenn der Tod so kommen mag“ ist im Stile einer traurigen Volksweise bewusst schlicht gehalten. Während der sechste Satz in seinem expressionistischen Gestus nicht ungefährlich das Monodram streift, ist es schließlich die Seele (die ausgehauchte, die weiterexistierende?), die wörtlich den letzten Abgesang über die Bäume und die Seelen prägt. Diana Kempffs Gedichte, der Enthusiasmus Christoph Poppens, die phantastischen Uraufführungs-Interpreten, allen voran die Sängerin Juliane Banse, haben mich zur Komposition dieser „Sieben Abgesänge auf eine tote Linde“ angeregt. Die „Sieben Abgesänge“ sind nunmehr auch eine Erinnerung an die erst jüngst verstorbene Diana Kempff. Jörg Widmann, im Juni 2008.

Musikmässigt var det som för länge sedan präglades av tre av de mest färgstarka dragspelsprofiler som någonsin funnits: Nisse Lind, Pietro Frosini och Ragge Sundquist. Lars Ek har många representanter. Om vi subtraherar den kvinnliga publikens entusiastiska kommentarer om utseendet och håller oss till musiken blir det bland annat.: en utmärkt teknik, rytmisk balans och gripande, en stor portion bra idé. Och det som gjorde djupast intryck på signed: en otrolig känsla för stil! Att spela Lind, Frosini och Sundquist är enormt svårt. Det är tekniskt svårt, var och en förstår, det är bara att lyssna. Men att fånga stilen är det svåraste av allt: att hela tiden vara Lars Ek in i minsta detalj för att samtidigt återge de tre andra mästarnas stil och manér utan att bara apa efter, det är fruktansvärt svårt. Att spela Lind, Frosini och Sundqvist så att de tre männen som förnöjt nickar i hans himmel medan vi lever idag får möta en levande dragspelare som väcker de gamla gudarna till liv och samtidigt är precis vad han är, nämligen Lars Ek, det är det som är märkvärdigt, finstämt och roligt har hänt under mången lång dag i dragspelslandet Sverige. Något häpnadsväckande har hänt i den svenska dragspelsvärlden de senaste åren, vi har fått en ny idol. Det är häpnadsväckande på två olika sätt: för oss som kan dragspelsvärlden är det ett faktum att Lars Ek har varit med som professionell dragspelare i snart 20 år, sedan han slutade skolan, för det andra: han har blivit en idol som spelar musik och i en stil som har sina rötter 50 år tillbaka i dragspelsmusikens historia. Man kan säga att Lars Ek, idag 35 år, borde ha varit 85 år, verksam på 30-talet. Själv erkänner han att han känner en slags hemlig längtan tillbaka till en tid då dragspelare var ekvilibrister, då dragspelare spelade på ett briljant sätt, den guldålder det var för all dragspelsmusik över hela världen, en tid som vi aldrig kommer att möta igen. Det är en typ av musik som är historisk men som inte hör hemma på museerna, inte död, det är en typisk musik fylld av liv. Mycket tack vare Lars Ek. Det är en ganska anmärkningsvärd situation. Lars Ek har spelat dragspel länge, han har spelat all typ av musik som kan spelas på dragspel. För bara några år sedan kom han i kontakt med Nils Lind och Ragge Sundquist (två legendariska svenska artister från 30- och 40-talen, båda döda sedan länge – de grundade båda en skola och en stil) och naturligtvis också Frosini. Och då, äntligen, kände Lars Ek att det var just här, i den här stilen, som han hörde hemma. Lars Ek kom äntligen hem. En del slarviga lyssnare säger att Lars Ek kopierar Nils Linds musik. Det är lyssnare som inte lyssnar. Andra säger att Lars är en galning - han spelar på ett dragspel av märket Raggie Sundquist från 1937 och sedan ett par år äger och spelar han också på ett dragspel som en gång ägdes av Pietro Frosini, tillverkat 1927. Det är inte mani. Stilen efterfrågar sådana instrument. Det är mest korrekt på det sättet. Lars Ek har blivit otroligt populär. Det finns många anledningar. Han har massor av personlighet, han är en scenpersonlighet, han visar entusiasm och glädje när han uppträder, han vet hur man lockar en publik (och tjejerna säger att han är väldigt snygg). En annan anledning är att musiken som Lars framför får mycket respons från publiken. Och snälla, tro inte att det bara är de gamla som var med på 30-talet som älskar musiken - det gör även de unga! Lars Ek x 2 heter skivan. Förklaringen är enkel. Lars kunde inte hitta någon andra dragspelare som kunde hjälpa honom. Så tack vare tekniken är han själv sin egen andra dragspelare i fem av de låtar som framförs. Det finns ytterligare en förklaring. Lars framför melodier kopplade till namn som Nils Lind, Ragge Sundquist och Frosini, men han spelar också fem egna kompositioner. Bara för att visa hur han vill att dragspelsmusik ska vara komponerad. Lars Ek behöver ingen rekommendation, hans skivor säljer ändå. Men du kommer att få några sista ord. Den här skivan är, stilmässigt, väldigt sällsynt att vara inspelad 1982, det gäller att blicka bakåt och att göra det med stor skicklighet, en tillbakablick på dragspelets guldålder. Det är också en väldigt personlig skiva. Inspirationskällan kan mycket väl vara Nils Lind, Ragge Sundquist och Pietro Frosini. Men det är Lars Ek som spelar. På sitt personliga sätt. Vilket gör att detta är en skiva som spelas på ett väldigt personligt sätt.
