Nell’Inghilterra del XVII secolo la musica ha un ruolo importante nel teatro; canzoni e brevi pezzi per orchestra tengono desta l’attenzione del pubblico all’inizio e alla fine delle rappresentazioni e durante il cambio delle scene.Scritte nel 1695, l’anno della sua prematura scomparsa, le musiche di scena per Abdelazer, o La Vendetta del Moro sono l’ultima composizione di Henry Purcell in questo genere. La fosca tragedia di Aphra Behn, portata sulle scene nel 1676 senza musica, viene riproposta nel 1695 alla riapertura del Drury Lane Theatre. La vicenda di Abdelazer, principe moresco che per vendicare l’assassinio del padre cerca subdolamente di usurpare il trono di Spagna attraverso l’affetto della regina spagnola, viene introdotta da una solenne Ouverture in tonalità minore che ne evidenzia la drammaticità . La tragedia suscita pochi entusiasmi tra il pubblico che, peraltro, apprezza moltissimo le musiche di Purcell e soprattutto la canzone finale Lucinda is bewitching fair, affidata al cantante tredicenne Jemmy Bowen, che viene pubblicata immediatamente come Aria a sé stante; le musiche poi verranno pubblicate postume nel 1697 come suite per archi e basso continuo nella quale l’ordine dei movimenti è differente da quella adottata per l’esecuzione teatrale.La suite è formata da Ouverture, Rondeau, Air I & II, Minuetto, Air, Giga, Hornpipe, Air. Il Minuetto è un pezzo di particolare eleganza, ma è il Rondeau che ha assicurato alla suite fama duratura; questo movimento è alla base della celebre composizione di Benjamin Britten Guida all’orchestra per i giovani, Variazioni e fuga su un tema di Henry Purcell. Il Rondeau, poi, è stato utilizzato come tema per la serie TV della BBC del 1969 The First Churchills e come sottofondo musicale per gioco Intellivision Thunder Castle del 1986; lo troviamo anche nel film di Joe Wright Orgoglio e pregiudizio, eseguito durante il ballo a Netherfield.

Published by Music Macri Editions (A0.931279). King Arthur, or The British Worthy (Z. 628), is a semi-opera in five acts with music by Henry Purcell and a libretto by John Dryden. It was first performed at the Queen's Theatre, Dorset Garden, London, in late May or early June 1691.The plot is based on the battles between King Arthur's Britons and the Saxons, rather than the legends of Camelot (although Merlin does make an appearance). It is a Restoration spectacular, including such supernatural characters as Cupid and Venus plus references to the Germanic gods of the Saxons, Woden, Thor, and Freya. The tale centres on Arthur's endeavours to recover his fiancée, the blind Cornish Princess Emmeline, who has been abducted by his arch-enemy, the Saxon King Oswald of Kent.King Arthur is a dramatick opera or semi-opera: the principal characters do not sing, except if they are supernatural, pastoral or, in the case of Comus and the popular Your hay it is mow'd, drunk. Secondary characters sing to them, usually as diegetic entertainment, but in Act 4 and parts of Act 2, as supernatural beckonings. The singing in Act 1 is religious observance by the Saxons, ending with their heroic afterlife in Valhalla. The protagonists are actors, as a great deal of King Arthur consists of spoken text. This was normal practice in 17th century English opera. King Arthur contains some of Purcell's most lyrical music, using adventurous harmonies for the day.

This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! This arrangement of Happy Birthday was written in 2011 for Edward H Tarr's 75th birthday concert in Basel (CH). Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM
